Nissan offers more evidence of GT-R 'Ring run: second video and pic of tires

Nissan released a second video of the incredible 7:29 lap time achieved by the GT-R earlier this year at the Nürburgring Nordschleife along with a photo of the stock tires that were installed on the car at the time. It did so to dispel accusations that the time might not be 100% authentic. Porsche in particular seemed highly suspicious, and boldly claimed its belief that Nissan wasn't using stock tires at the time. The new video starts with some off-track buildup and shows the 50kg of test equipment that was on-board the car at the time, as well. Although we don't speak Japanese, we think that's what they're talking about along with discussing the fresh stock tires that were fitted to the car. The actual lap starts about 4 minutes in and looks pretty authentic to us. We're sure there will continue to be questions and complaints from all sides in this controversy, and we know that this is starting to turn into a a bit of a melodrama, but we really can't help ourselves. You can catch up on the whole sordid affair by clicking here and check out the video after the jump.

They can offer anything they like. The only thing that can make this go away for them is to do it again with another car, for example the one Porsche used or another bone stock car.

I'm bored from this, when we are gonna see a real duel between the GT-R and TT 997?:D
  4. Merc1 Premium Member

At this point I'd want to see that with a facelifted 997 Turbo.

But that would be unfair IMO,Porsche has studied the GT-R well and the necessary adjustments are done plus Porsche said it tested the GT-R with the current model so current TT 997 it is or wait and face the mighty V-spec GT-R:D

I'm glad that we have SOME evidence that this actually did happen. Doesn't show whether the engine is completely stock or not, but whatever, it's a great first step. I still doubt that they changed the car enough to make it let's say 20 seconds faster than what Porsche claim, but I think the ball is on Porsche's court now.

All I can say is the man driving this thing has balls. The first corner after the long straight, I would have soiled myself if I was in the car with him.

I call this no evidence at all and the ball is still at Nissan.

So, they show us a couple of tires? What does that mean?
  8. warot Well-Known Member

did you not see the video of the run?
  9. dr Dunkel Global Moderator

Is there a new video showing that the GT-R was standard?
  10. warot Well-Known Member

No, but that's what I'm saying though. It doesn't prove that the car was completely stock. But at the same time, how much extra power would you have to give this thing to go from Porsche's time to this one.

I could be wrong but I doubt they bumped the car up by 100 hp and thought they could get away with it. Like I said, not 100% evidence, but enough for me to patiently wait until spring
  11. dr Dunkel Global Moderator

OK, there is where we differ - I guess they thaugt they would get away with it again.

An interesting find to buttress Nissan's claim. Although the driver had to admit the tyres on the Porsche were suspect.
It is also not a fair comparison to base what the stock cars match results will be because these are not stock cars, but nevertheless, the GT-R is certainly rewriting the books.

I can't watch the movie here at work. What does it tell us?

    Clear winner is GT-R...:eusa_clap

    Lap times:

    GT-R: 1:32,7 (avg speed 97.09 mph)
    GT3: 1:36,5 (avg speed 93.26 mph)

In drag race GT-R won for almost 4-5 car lengths...

More drivers question Nissan's Nurburgring time

Chief engineer Kazutoshi Mizuno said the new GT-R "could get anywhere from 7:44 on up, with most laps coming in between 7:55 and 7:58." This fits perfectly with the recent times achieved by various professional drivers.

    Quote:
Here a couple of interesting observations from Nissan's GT-R record drive, that come from a highly reliable source without any connections to/interest in Porsche.

Nissan had a couple of GT-R's at the Ring that day. The car that did the record run featured:

    * stripped out interior
    * missing pre-cat
    * use of 110 octane race fuel

These were the changes/alterations that my friend could observe. They indicate that weight was below and power well above a standard car. Given these "improvements" it appears likely that the car also featured non-standard rubber - but this last comment is only an assumption.

Porsche had Walter Rohrl checking out the GT-R and his best time was 07:45. Yesterday another former Rallye champion (who holds the fastest lap on the Ring in the wet - so no rookie either) managed to get near 07:50 in not fully ideal conditions using a stock customer car from overseas.

Given these data points the 07:29 posted by Nissan were not set by a standard car. End of story.

Given that Walter R managed a truly excellent 07:45 I wonder why Nissan bothered to cheat at all. It's a fantastic time well into 997TT/GT3RS territory for a fraction of the price that should really get the guys at Porsche (and potential customers) thinking. IMHO the car also has a dramatic presence in the metal and sounds great.

Its funny how fast information goes around the world! I drove the Nissan GTR yesterday for KW with the KW clubsport and with the original suspension. All other parts were stock and the weight was original! Due to the fact, that there where some passing manouvers and 2 small mistakes in my line, the theoretical best time, calculated from my best sectors (with data logger), was a 7.46. ( a real lap was 7,49)

So I think, it is not possible, to go faster, when W.Röhrl and Chr.Menzel also where not able to go under 7.45!

The secret source, who watched the test of the 3 cars is not so secret: He owns a guest house in Nürbrug and was there at the test and watched everything. I spoke to him 2 days ago and it was true that tha car was far away from stock, that means power, sound, tyres, exhaust, weight!

But anyway the Nissan GTR is fast also in stock outfit and fun to drive. Only when acclerating it would need more power to the rear, to kill the understeer. Under braking conditions it steers very good into corners! Sometimes to much, but then it is even more fun!

If You want, You can post that in the internet! Source: Wolf!

"We bought the car in the US. We drove a GT-R with new tyres," he says.

Achleitner was initially protective of the exact lap times, which were run during a program when Porsche also compared its upcoming four-door Panamera with a range of potential rivals.

But he eventually revealed his team clocked the GT-R at 7 minutes 54 seconds, with the 911 Turbo managing 7:38 and the GT2 getting down to 7:34.

The laps were not run by Porsche's usual hot-lap specialist, former world rally champion and race winner Walter Rohrl, but one of the company's chassis

The vast majority of US cars are Premium models, not the base model (which comes with the stickier tires as standard). Take a look on ebay just for reference. Only about 1 in 15 are base models. If it's true that Porsche now admits to a 7:45 time (hmm...9 seconds lower than before; wonder why that is?), that's not far off the pace of the 7:38 done by Nissan after thousands of laps. Even if you can't get beyond the hp/wt issue, a 7:45 is still simply staggering.

The way the GT-R simply pulled away was quite remarkable. And this is a customer car with only 700 miles on it, with the GT3 getting the jump off the line.
  19. warot Well-Known Member

It made that GT3 look like a GTI. That was pretty impressive
