Look past the Mercedes-Benz Ocean Drive concept's LED head and taillampsand fancy flush doorhandles and you're looking at what a likely S-Class production convertible will look like. Names for the famous strip of road on South beach, the Ocean Drive would fit right in with the beautiful people and the high-end cars known to prowl the area.

Based on the V12-powered, long-wheelbase S 600 sedan, the Ocean Drive concept gets an oversized grille (we like) and retains its source car's four doors. the side glass is frameless, and there are no pillars to interrupt the lines when the car is open to the sky. A traditional, large soft-top protects occupants in sub-optimal weather conditions, and the car introduces a neck-warming technology called AIRSCARF. Nifty indeed. Build it.

Re: Mercedes Benz - Ocean Drive Concept

All I can say is, what the hell is going on at Mercedes-Benz's design studio?

I am now totally confused about Mercedes design direction -- where have the recent design cues gone? ...MB made such a big deal about its new styling and then produces a concept that looks more like a VAG product.

This concept looks like the bastard child of a disastrous encounter between a Bentley and a Cadillac.

It has the rear of the Azure and the profile styling of a Continental GT -- Mercedes is definitely not the design leader it used to be.

Re: Mercedes Benz - Ocean Drive Concept

I agree with you, Rob. This looks like everything except MB... :thumbdown

Plus the idea of S convertible...:t-banghea Maybe that was good in the past, but today i cannot imagine a convertible S...:t-hands: Whatever...

Re: Mercedes Benz - Ocean Drive Concept

And what about those rims? How do you people like 'em? Me? Horrible, just like those that we've already seen when they presented both new S and CL...

Re: Mercedes Benz - Ocean Drive Concept

I'm not sure what to make of it. It's a novel idea but where MB's execution is concerned, I agree with Rob 100%.

Re: Mercedes Benz - Ocean Drive Concept

mmmm, looks like more expensive than the S class, i think it should've been a Maybach rather than a Merc

Re: Mercedes Benz - Ocean Drive Concept

I got my Auto Motor und Sport today and this car was featured in it. Although it still looks like a Mercedes, the design is incredibly futuristic and clean. I really like it so far. To me, it looks like the next-generation S-Class. :usa7uh:

The front headlights is probably the only thing that bother me at the moment. Overall though, it's looking good.

Also, some of you have complained about the design: it looks like a Mercedes-Benz still. Peter Pfeiffer, the design boss at Mercedes-Benz was quoted as saying in today's Auto Motor und Sport:

"Wir dürfen niemals still stehen, sondern müssen immer weiter nach vorne denken."

"We must never stand still, we must always think ahead."

In my lines above, I said that I think this car looks a like a futuristic version of the Mercedes S-Class. This would go hand in hand with what Mr. Pfeiffer said. "Thinking ahead".:t-cheers:

Re: Mercedes Benz - Ocean Drive Concept

Great! Thanks a lot for the update

Re: Mercedes Benz - Ocean Drive Concept

So there it is. A bit too much LED for my taste but I love the name. Too bad the car didn't live up to it.

Oh come on Chris, that is just marketing spin. You and I both know Bruno Sacco will be hating this. This is not at all a forward-looking design. It is all style over substance; sentimental pastiche making references to styling cues from half a century ago. But most disturbingly, it clearly is taking inspiration from its rivals, Namely Cadillac and Bentley -- that is not a good road for Mercedes-Benz to be going down.

Re: Mercedes Benz - Ocean Drive Concept

OMG...please never make a production car of this POS.

Horrible.

Marketing spin or not, it's true what he says. And all car companies think like this for all their departments, with the exception of Morgan perhaps. :t-rot:

Look, I am not an in-depth design critic like you, Rob. To me, the design looks really good (with the exception of the headlights). I see Mercedes-Benz written all over it. I don't really see any Bentley in the design. Cadillac? Yes and no. I suppose the recent boxy styles Cadillac has been releasing could be claimed to be present in this design, but if we're going to slam this car for "copying" Cadillac, we should also criticize Honda for creating the boxy Stepwagon etc. If you recall, MB also had an era in design where all their cars were "boxy": W201, W124, W126, W140 and W202. The design cues of the Ocean Drive Concept could very well have been inspired by these models.

Re: Mercedes Benz - Ocean Drive Concept

One design element I find interesting is that the recent character line of MB that runs from the rear to the front, on this concept runs from the front to the rear.

It is only my opinion :)

"Wir dürfen niemals still stehen, sondern müssen immer weiter nach vorne denken."

"We must never stand still, we must always think ahead."

Well I can only take from that statement that Mercedes is moving towards this kind of design for future cars. If so, .......Audi will slaughter them.

The W124 looks fresher than this concept. This is a real Mercedes -- cool, sedate, and timeless.

Mercedes' designers have become too preoccupied with styling excess.

Re: Mercedes Benz - Ocean Drive Concept

That looks dangerously like a Bentley or Rolls Convertible. And also, can you say "flaming surface"??
