Two different SUVs may be based on the A/B-Class modular front wheel drive architetcure (MFA)?

One sporty, and one more traditional?

The sporty version is rumored to come first?

Mercedes-Benz GLA Compact SUV Rendered
Mercedes-Benz will be unveiling a compact SUV based on the MFA platform, which will be called the GLA. The MFA (modular front architecture) is the German automakers latest platform, which it intends to use in atleast 5 models by 2015. The company has already unveiled three cars on this platform – the new A-Class, B-Class and CLA-Class. While the B-Class is set to go on sale in India next month, the A-Class will arrive next year and the CLA-Class will see an Indian debut by 2014.

The Mercedes CLA-Class is a small sized sedan, which will compete with the Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series Sedan. The MFA platform will also spawn a crossover based on the A-Class. The GLA is expected to arrive in India in 2014 and will rival Audi’s Q3 and BMW’s X1. It will be a front-wheel drive vehicle, just like all other cars based on the MFA platform. The GLA will also carry forward the interiors of the A-Class, which are one of the best in the segment.

Mercedes-Benz plans to locally produce the GLA in India by the middle of this decade. The company is investing heavily in setting up assembly lines at its Chakan facility. These assembly lines are being set up to enable CKD operations for the A-Class and B-Class. Mercedes is also contemplating local manufacturing of these cars to increase sales of these cars. Mercedes cannot bring the GLA before 2014 and has thus decided to concentrate on dealership expansion. The B-Class serves as a stop-gap method till the GLA crossover arrives.

REPORT: Mercedes-Benz supposedly readying two very different compact SUVs - the GLA and the GLG

b3a9f9c0d24bab65804946f6a72d54d1.webp

This news is taken out from the speculations' bin and was released on the market by the German automotive magazine Autobild, that allegedly has information Mercedes-Benz will offer two compact SUVs developed on the MFA platform. The first to come out is the GLA-Class, arriving in 2014, and the latter one is the GLG, which looks to be a tribute to the G-Class in terms of styling.

Mercedes-Benz will enter the segment of premium compact SUVs/crossovers when it launches the eagerly anticipated GLA-Class model. A logical addition to the ever expanding A-Class/B-Class portfolio, this vehicle will target BMW X1 and Audi Q3 and be offered in either front-drive or 4x4 configuration. The GLA will sport company's frugal 4-cylinder engines already in use the MPV and hatchback cars the Germans have already released. If we are to believe rumors, chances are a hardcore GLA 45 AMG rolls off the Affalterbach labs. With almost 350 hp, it would certainly be an unbeatable and one-of-a-kind proposition in the SUV market.

What we find rather intriguing is the rumor we mentioned above. The GLG derives from the GLA and is a very interesting, retro-styled niche vehicle that aims to capture the minds of enthusiast with the help of a fashionable, rough, boxy exterior that, in every sense, harks back to the rich heritage the iconic G-Class created at Mercedes-Benz. To put it straight, this is a baby G that should also have some off-road abilities. While we find this daring, it is still hard to believe the German carmaker will ever build such a variant of the GLA, even though it could turn out to be a hit among buyers. If the GLG sees the light of day eventually, it won't do it before 2016.

If the plans Mercedes-Benz has to construct a consistent fleet of niche vehicles are greenlighted in their actual form, it means the Stuttgart-based constructor will then have the largest offering of crossovers and SUVs in the premium segment. Imagine: G, GL, GLK, M, E-Class Van to replace the R-Class, GLA, GLG, GLC,MLC and C-Class Van. Quite a lot of letters, a bit of an overcrowded list, but rather individualized and self-assured vehicles to suit all tastes. Until we know anything for sure, we invite you to take a look through the next CGIs of the announced, future GLA we found across the internet. Enjoy!

Wolf, how realistic do you think this is?

Also slightly offtopic, but is the S XL the long wheelbase or another vehicle. Meaning:
S Standard wheelbase
S Long wheelbase
S XL
S pullman

The above graph without notations was published by Mercedes-Benz, and is thus realistic. However the notations are based on various rumors, e.g: ;)

Mercedes will offer a super-long wheelbase S-Class, and a six-door Pullman version, with 350mm and 650mm of wheelbase stretch respectively. These cars will sit above the standard 5100mm wheelbase S-Class and the LWB one with 180mm of extra length. Then we've got the sporty ones. The current CL will be replaced by another full-size coupe, and there'll be a CL convertible for the first time too. Finishing off the seven-model S-Class range is a four-door coupe version, essentially a bigger brother to the genre-defining CLS.

The extended wheelbase versions, XL and Pullman, might feature a bespoke design, differing from the standard SWB W222 and LWB V222 versions. For example they might be inspired by the more traditional upright grille, longer hood and proportions of the 600 W100.

From Autoevolution:
Spyshots: Mercedes GLA Crossover with Rendering

Mercedes plans to launch a crossover based on the same MFA modular architecture as the A-Class and B-Class. It will be called the GLA and will sit at the bottom of the offroading range that will start with the letters ‘GL’ for all the models, the “A” indicating this is the smallest of the bunch.

The GLA became official recently, when at the start of production of the new A-class at Mercedes’ plant in Rastatt, Germany, the automaker said the factory would also be making a crossover.

The GLA will act as a direct rival for the BMW X1, which is the best selling luxury crossover in Europe right now.

The full production versions will come with a body that’s only 110 mm longer than the standard A-Class. The engine options will most likely also be pulled from the A-Class, meaning a choice of small displacements turbocharged four-cylinder units with up to about 200 hp. An AMG version is also possible for the GLA, as its brother the A-Class will get a go-fast version.

Looks very close to the above rendering...And looks same as the A class...Wont the boot be very small for a SUV..Cant remember the size of the X1 boot space.

This is just a mule. That isn't the actual body of the GLA. THey're using a raised A class in the initial testing.

So, it will share the front fascia with the new A-Class as it seems...

Actually the whole appearance looks like a stretched & beefed-up A-class. But there's still much camo there, so I'll reserve the final opinion when seeing the production car IRL or at least in official press photos.

Mercedes Benz has been working on a brand new addition to its SUV range, a small crossover built on the same MFA platform that underpins the A- and B-Class, plus a new coupe and the CLA sedan.

The crossover that will be known as the GLA has been spotted once before in the past, when it was caught testing in September. However, that was a mule, only an A-Class with a jacked up suspension.

These fresh spy photos are the very first taken of the GLA crossover with its real body on. As you can se, it has a more muscular front end, headlights inspired by the GLK, broader shoulders, roof rails and a different boot.

The rear overhang is slightly longer and the boot has sloped glass, following the trend for SUVs with coupe bodies.

The GLA will rival the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. It will be powered by the same engines as the A-Class, small displacements turbocharged four-cylinder units with up to about 200 hp.
