F1 Max wants `green` V6 engines

Max Mosley is once again talking about a "green revolution" for F1 and has targeted 2011 as the date by which he wants his changes implemented.

The FIA President has often spoken over the past few years about making F1 more environmentally friendly, however, his comments have met by jeers as people question how it could ever happen.

Mosley, though, now has a plan.

Under his proposal F1 teams will switch to eco-friendly 2.2-litre turbocharged V6 engines that would run on biofuel. However, the engines would develop roughly 770 horsepower, around 100 less than the present 2.4-litre V8 engines.

Maximum revs would also be cut by approximately 9,000rpm, which would mean the cars would also create less noise polution.

Mosley also proposes that the engines be made to last for five grand prix weekends and that the cars would be fitted with traction control, four-wheel drive and have a power-boost facility.

The latter, which is used in the A1GP series, would be deployed by drivers in order to allow for easier overtaking.

"We are in active discussions with the major manufacturers to ensure that, in future, research and development relevant only to Formula One will be discouraged, whereas that which has relevance to road-car development will be encouraged," Mosley told F1-Racing magazine.

"We understand that such an approach has broad support from the competing manufacturers and we will work closely with them to ensure that, in particular, the new environmentally relevant technologies that many of them are developing are made our priority.

"Whilst aiming to achieve these goals we will ensure that the sporting spectacle of F1 remains the same or is even improved by the new developments."

According to the magazine, Mosley has already submitted his plans to F1's car manufacturers, although McLaren-Mercedes has yet to give it any thought.

"McLaren's view is not yet fully formed," said McLaren CEO Martin Whitmarsh. "I think you would have to say that, on the face of it, these are very laudable propositions.

"However, I think we have been going through a period of much change in Formula One, what with sealed engines in 2007, new electronic systems in 2008, energy recovery systems in 2009 and then more sweeping changes from 2011.

"Change is always very expensive in Formula One. We understand that the sport must evolve, but we are concerned about cost."

I am definitely not a fan of it. rev limited to only 9000rpm? V6 engine? 4 WD? No, no, and no.

The 2.4 V8s develop at best 780 to 790 hp, not 850+.
Only the turbos and V10s went there and beyond.

And what's wrong with "green" V10s ?!
V6s are even more retarded than the V8s and/or V12s, while the V10s are by comparison infinately tunable.

But first how about some RWD mecanical grip to have overtaking ?!

How about bringing back slicks, active suspensions and wider cars like the fun days ?!
That way no need for clumsy, heavy, compromised AWD.

Exactly, improve the quality of the racing 1st then worry about other things later......Being green and environmental is fashionable these days, and Max has obviousely caught the bug.

Yes and 4WD/AWD as opposed to Active Suspensions, wider cars and slicks for mecanical grip is downright retarded.

This is not the WRC. No hard feeling intended to WRC fans

Max probably thinks using 4WD will help the cars to gain more mechanical grip, but adding more weight to F1 cars aren't good, with a even smaller and less powerful engine, F1 will no longer be the fastest motor racing sport. I think Bridgestone is opposing the idea of slicks because they dont' want to pay for the massive re-tooling cost.

I don't even car for Enzo.

The Renault's great creations, and legacy, the V10s and/or the super high rever, curtosy of their pneumatic valve gear system, will be washed for the sake of some green fashion non-sense.

But 4WD/AWD was a failure in F1, while Active Suspensions were a great succes.

And there's always other tyre manufacturers.

I just read that...WT-F is wrong with these guys? What happened to pinnacle of motorsports? If these guys keep going like this I think Nascar will be more fun!

Looks like the age of motorsports is coming to an end...Stupid "Green" activists!

I think Max Mosley has completely lost it, seriously I think he has gone bunkers.
What next will he be asking for: 4 cylinder engines?
My goodness, I think he is intent on reducing the sport from the Pinnacle of Motorsport to laughing stock of Motorsport.

I can't believe he is actually considering going with V6.
I hope the manufacturers give us what the fans want by forming a breakaway championship.

honestly ever since they changed from v10 engines t v8 f1 started getting boring , just the sound of the v10 engine makes it more interesting.

The latest news suggest that with AWD + TC might also come ESP.

Now I can digest/see no problem TC/LC (considering the power to weight to (lack of) mecanical grip ratio) , but AWD + TC +ESP is just too much for me.

True, V10s reving at over 20 000 rpms producing over 160 db was a beautiful symphony.

The V8s sound wimpy, witch they are, but they are fantastic as opposed to V6s.

at this rate f1 might as well be horse drawn.
how can one man screw it up so bad, does he listen to the fans at all ?

And why is f1 trying to be "green" anyway?

F1 could switch to turbo V6 engines running on biofuel.

Max Mosely and the FIA are looking at some radically different and more restrictive rules for the future of Formula One racing. For the past couple of years, they've talked about trying to make the cars more eco-friendly and relevant to real world cars. The latest proposals are an interesting step in that direction.

For 2011 and beyond, Mosely wants the cars powered by turbocharged 2.2L V-6 engines running on biofuel. When F1 cars first ran turbos in the 1980s, there was initially a period where they ran unlimited boost and rpm and teams were building special qualifying engines that put out over 1,000hp from 1.5L! This time, it's likely to be a little different, with a 10,000 rpm rev limit, a standardized ECU, and stricter restrictions on the fuel content.

So far, there's no indication of what type of biofuel would be used, though given the current success of Audi and Peugeot with their LeMans prototypes, biodiesel seems a likely candidate. The big question is, can you imagine a diesel Ferrari running around Monaco or Monza?

Also proposed for the 2011-2014 regulations are four-wheel drive, power-boost buttons and 'severely constrained' aerodynamics, such as the limitation of wind tunnel use, and the document was also sent to Volkswagen and Ford, who may enter F1 in the future.

What happened to the proposed breakaway championship?
I think we need it if F1 gets to the V6 level.

Yes, we need it, unfortunately I think it's dead.
V10 power needs be brought back.
As do slicks, active suspensions and wide cars.

10000 RPMs is an insult.
