"In what would likely be a major surprise to many Apple followers, The Loop's Jim Dalrymple reports that Apple is not planning to introduce any new hardware at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, scheduled for June 6th through 10th. The conference has been consistently used to introduce new iPhone hardware over the last several years, with the company occasionally introducing other hardware as well.
Apple closed the door this morning on any speculation that it would announce new hardware at its Worldwide Developers conference saying it would focus on iOS and Mac OS.

Apple's apparent focus on software in its WWDC announcement backs up what my own sources are saying about the annual conference. That is, expect a software show in 2011, not a hardware event.

While a focus on software is not unusual for Apple's WWDC promotional materials given its primary positioning as an event for developers, Dalrymple notes that the 2011 materials do nothing to contradict what he has already been hearing from sources: namely, no new hardware this year.

It is also important to note that Dalrymple has not specifically claimed that new iPhone hardware won't be introduced in the same general timeframe as WWDC, merely claiming that any introduction won't occur at the event itself.

One analyst report from late last month indicated that a September launch for the fifth-generation iPhone seemed to be the likely scenario. Those rumors were turned into claims of "delays" that were refuted by Dalrymple himself and other sources. The difference may have been in semantics, however, as Dalrymple simply noted at the time that Apple had not deviated from its own internal release schedule plans, but whether those plans called for a typical June release or something more in line with the September rumors or even something else entirely was unknown.

Update: Japanese blog Macotakara reports that the fifth-generation iPhone will "probably" not ship until 2012 based on the current status of part production.
According to Chinese source, iPhone 5 will not probablly be shipped during 2011 because the parts manufacturing for iPhone 5 are not started.

The site had previously offered relatively accurate information about the iPad 2. The site also reported earlier this month that the fifth-generation iPhone will adopt an aluminum back and a redesigned antenna.

Update 2: Macotakara has clarified its original report to note that the fifth-generation iPhone is apparently not set to ship before the end of Apple's fiscal 2011, which occurs in late September 2011.

Update 3: All Things Digital and Engadget are hearing similar claims that there will be no fifth-generation iPhone introduction at WWDC 2011."

If this is true Apple is trying to make sure they stay competitive and releasing an iphone this summer would be a bad move if that iphone won't be LTE compatible. So, if the rumors are true, their best step is to wait until the qualcom chips are ready/cheap and incorporate it into the phone and release the phone in the fall 2011 or early 2012.

Little off topic info from my side: iPad 2 is the best gadget I have ever bought. Absolutely adore it. And everyone I show it to is in awe :D

BTW, have spent €50 on apps already :eusa_doh: Got like 30 great apps now, including GarageBand and iMovie!!

klier, that is awesome man! I am glad you like it and you are lucky to have gotten your hands on one. I know people who are still waiting to get theirs.

Had to wait in line for 2 hours, and I have never ever done that!

All available models were sold out in the whole country within hours!

Got a 32 gig Vodafone 3G model, in white (which turns out to be great looking in real life in combination with the aluminum backside...) And a black leather smart cover ;)

Typing from the iPad right now btw :D
germancarforum.com looks absolutely wonderful on it...

That is not bad. I waited in line two hours for the iphone 3g when it came out. My friend waited 7 hours to get the iPad 2.

No it's not bad indeed, considering there were people in the same line who were waiting since 10 AM (selling started 5 PM, and I got mine around 6:30 PM, after getting there like 4:45 PM)

Apple, permanently stuck behind the wave.

I take it you you dislike Apple products? :D

I am not sure if it is being stuck behind the wave as much as trying to be smart about things. Remember, Apple ships in huge quantities and they like to do things right. I really think that the theory I posited may be the correct one. Well, it seems like the most logical one.

I will tell you this: if they release a phone outside of their standard/typical cycles (every year) and this phone, for example, does not have LTE, then they will definitely be stuck way behind the wave.

I just think that phones now are really on par with each other, though I prefer the iPhone over all others because I think it is better. Being objective about it, however, Apple cannot wait too long to compete. So, if you take their typical cycle, they'd have to release the iPhone 5 this upcoming June/July. During that time, they would have to release something with an upgraded chipset to conform to the ever-growing LTE networks. If they release a phone that is not up to par, for example, they will be behind. So, that would mean we'd all have to wait until the following year to see the technology incorporated. Apple does have a tendency to be behind things, you are right, but I think they cannot afford that now, especially with iOS devices.

They are learning and growing and I think you will not see them make the same mistakes twice. Hopefully, if this rumor is true, they will release the iPhone 5 in the fall with LTE.

I'm sure the iPhone 5 will be launched this year in any case. Apple wouldn't miss the holiday season sales. Neither does Apple want to give their competitors too much headway.

Yeah, we will see. This is, after all, just a rumor. It would definitely stray away from Apple's practices. The only issue, however, is the fact that actual reliable sources, that have corroborated and been very accurate in the past, have said that Apple will not release an iPhone this summer. We will just have to wait and see.

Ignorance is bliss ;)

klier, be nice now :D

dr Dunkel does make a good point, something that I think has been changing now for well over a year. Apple is moving faster and is trying to not be as slow as they used to be in the past. I wrote about this a few posts above.

Many still believe, and with good reason, that they will continue to falter. I hope they prove everyone wrong and I think they are moving in that direction.

On other news, I hope to pick up an iPad really soon.

Three things could be happening:
1. Apple is orchestrating a surprise unveil by hinting at the possible no-show of the iPhone. Everyone and their second cousin expects Apple to release a new iPhone in June, so they wanted to get some of the shock and awe back. This first is unlikely, because it is not what a mature company does, but it is a possibility nonetheless.
2. Apple wants to give its supply chain some much needed time, thus launching a phone that WILL ship to the demand and not have serious lags like the iPad 2.
3. Apple has realized, later than they would have preferred, that having a non-LTE product in the market is something even they could not get away with in light of the competition, and thus have gone back to the drawing boards.

I am hoping for the latter. I had been waiting for the 5 so that I could swap this June. I am still on my mid-2008 original iPhone. I bought it three weeks before the release of the 3G and vowed to update only when I can get an iPhone that really kicks it up a notch or too in regards to its predecessors and the competition.

I have similarly held out on the iPad 2, waiting instead for number 3. Where I get my Apple rocks off is in my brand new MacBook Pro.

I got a new Macbook Pro too, but haven't really used it since my iPad 2 :D

Also, iPad 4 will be better than iPad 3, so you better wait for that one! But then again, iPad 5 will be coming too, so....maybe just wait until Apple announces they stop making the iPad, so you can get the last model :p

This news Is rather surprising. I was also holding out for the iPhone 5 but if we can get some kind of confirmation for a 2012 launch I will go out and get an iphone4 tomorrow. Can't stand how unrefined and over rated android is.

There will be a new iPhone this summer. The iPad 2 got the new A5 chip, just like the iPad 1 got the A4 chip. We'll see an iPhone 5 with the A5 chip. So the iPhone 5 will be more like an iPhone 4S. Same hardware, just faster processor.

I'm waiting for the phone. Don't want the iPhone 4 as I find it to be a bit slow for multi-tasking, especially compared to the iPad 2. The same issues were present with my iPod Touch. Filled at 64GB I found it to be a bit slow and wouldn't want to deal with the same hassle with the next device I buy. Last saturday I was subject of theft and my iPod was stolen out of my jacket. So now I won't replace it but wait for the new iPhone update.

I find this rather unnecessary. I see no need to buy every version of iPad, and someone ridiculing me for not dumping my original iPad, and rather wait for the three is pretty immature in my book. I base my purchases based on my personal needs and not what Apple would like me to do, i.e. drop hundreds on having marginal improvements every year. But go ahead, get an iPad every year, and each successive iPhone on top of that, I will not tender an opinion on that. It is because I picked up the original iPad that I saw the transition to iPhone 4 rather superfluous last year.

A major potential hint at the supposed delay of the iphone 5 is also the adoption of cloud computing and the uniformization of both iOS and Mac OS. This could potentially turn the smartphone standards on its head, given that one would no longer need nominally higher storage capacities since all will reside in the cloud. Mac Lion is already known to have adopted iOS features. I am excited at the integration and possibilities that come with it. My business depends on the ability to have all my devices integrated, and information available everywhere. This could potentially open a whole new door to the auto industry as well, with smartphones and/or portable computers effectively providing the car's brainpower when device is in the car. Imagine a scenario of your iPhone or Mac in your briefcase syncing up automatically with your car to provide navigation and communication power. The future is coming.
