^^^ Quite right!

The 458 is pretty lightweight already (around 1480 kg), and the heaviest biggest AWD Ferrari weighs less than 1800 kg. Ok,that is pretty heavy but still do-able for the all season 2+2 GT it's supposed to be.

BTW, what don't you understand from this (about the CF):

"Today it does not make sense," Felisa said. "The weight benefits compared with an aluminum chassis [such as the 458's] are very small and the costs are huge. In the event of an accident, it is also very difficult to identify whether the chassis has been damaged."

"I don't sell cars; I sell engines. The cars I throw in for free since something has to hold the engines in."
-Enzo Ferrari

Unfortunately these days are over and carbon fiber is the only way they can stay competitive.

Well, when it comes to the big guys, i.e. VW, BMW, M-B, I think they could leverage the cost of CF when it's implemented on many car lines that are high volume especially when compared to Ferrari. I don't think their parent company, FIAT, has the resources to implement on to their mainstream cars. Regarding McLaren, they are the leaders in CF construction as they have been working with it for the 20+ years' of history, so their R&D cost is also a little bit lower due to their previous work. I am sure Ferrari will invest in CF, but with a looming recession, I think they are hedging their bets on aluminum, especially with their wealth of experience.

Sounds good.. this and the new Carrera GT .. and then you have the Huayra allready..

Should be a fine battle and a new era:)

We all know who came out on top last time;) ( this time my bets are on porsche though)

Ferrari Enzo successor powered by V12 hybrid, next 599 to get 700+ hp

Ferrari has rolled out a few tasty bits of news courtesy of Car and Driver. The Italian sports car manufacturer has made it clear that the successor to the legendary Enzo will come to the party packing a V12 engine mated to a hybrid system. While Ferrari has already hinted that the company is seriously considering electrification with concepts like the 599 HY-KERS, CEO Amedeo Felisa said that a production Ferrari hybrid would have to include some sort of efficiency-boosting system in addition to a performance adder like a kinetic energy recovery system.

Felisa also said that the replacement for the company's 599 will feature somewhere around 700 horsepower. The machine will keep its front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout, but will rely on aluminum alloys for its body structure instead of carbon fiber. Felisa says that the absurd power in the future 599 is not a response to the Lamborghini Aventador, however.

Uh huh.

Well this time around the competition for the Enzo is going to be quite immense, esp with signifcantly smaller companies such as Pagani and Keoniggsegg turning up the heat.

Ferrari too have a long history of working with carbon fiber, I believe the F40 was the first ever production car to use a carbon fiber monocoque and they have continued with this method for the F50 and the Enzo, the R&D team for the road cars can always ask their F1 engineers for technical support as well. Ferrari and Mclaren are two of the best funded racing team, and if Mclaren have the resources to build a car like the MP4-12C then Ferrari shouldn't have any problem building something similar. I suppose they have decided to spend the money on something else, to develop the new V8 and V12 engines with the KERS package isn't cheap. As long as the aluminium space frame structure is still capable of fulfilling its purpose as demonstrated by the 458, Ferrari can afford to wait.

On another note, if the 599 replacement has around 700hp then the Enzo replacement will be quite a powerful machine. Ferrari knows this car has to set the benchmark in all areas for the next decade.

^McLaren f1 was the first production car to have CF monocoque. F40's chassis consisted of steel tubular space frame, but I think it used CF body panels. F50 was the first Ferrari with cf monocoque.

Well, let us not forget the McLaren P13 (F1 Successor), McLaren may very well have learned from the P11 (MP4-12C), and if they get it right, it won't be an easy task for Ferrari.

Super-Enzo, Super F1, Porsche 918 and (strong probably) future Pagani Huayra ClubSport...
a new generation of hyper-masterpieces is coming (actual Pagari already is)!
OMG

Sad part is is that this fight will be deciding for Pagani's future and I'm afraid that being the first to throw the punch they will be the underdog here. Just how they were the top dog in Zonda - Enzo - CGT - SLR battle, where they were the last to join the fight. The competition won't release anything untill they're sure they can beat the Huayra. Performance and price wise.
Huayra will forever be in its own league regarding everything else none the less.
