Daimler celebrates the motor car’s 125th birthday

I doubt we'll see any other world premiers at Geneva other than the C-Coupe. Such a concept would've been unveiled already. Furthermore MB usually only gives us one world premiere per auto show (Detroit: C-Class, Paris: CLS, Beijing: SBC, New York: R-Class, Geneva: F800.)

I suppose anything could happen, but I think Mercedes has shown their hand.

I´ve heard something special is coming to Frankfurt, some extreme excercise of design. I´ve also hear the sculpture Mercedes presented in the 125th aniversary was the very early draw of a new super-car, something like a new SLR, which would compete against the 918 and Ferrari Enzo II. The car should have a flybrid, which is supossed to be a V8 + a few electric engines. Pretty much the new Enzo formula.

This are all specualtions, and the sketches come from the Autobild 25th aniversary.

New supercar from MB?:

For some reason reminded me of this one: ;)

I sooo hope that the F800 Concept is a very accurate indication of what we can expect from M-B in the relatively near future.

I find its' design nothing short of amazing. Then again, if M-Bs' volume sedans mimick the F800s' architecture, the CLS will become somewhat redundant, eh ?

Just a quick update.

The next 125th anniversary celebration will start on May 7.

Special commemorative stamp and coin for the “125 years of the automobile”

125 years ago the Kaiserliche Patentamt (Imperial Patent Office) in Berlin granted Benz & Co. in Mannheim the patent No. 37,435 for a “vehicle with a gas engine drive system”.

This patent is see as the birth certificate of the automobile. “Patentirt im Deutschen Reiche vom 29. Januar 1886 an” – “patented in the German Empire from 29. January 1886 on”: thus reads the document; and that very day the automobile’s triumphal march began that was to change the world to an unimaginable extent. The Federal Finance Ministry is issuing a special postage stamp and a special coin to celebrate the automobile’s 125th birthday.

The special postage stamp shows the first motor car in the world, with a drawing of the patent of 29th January 1886 as a background. The stamp has a denomination of 55 cents and will be available at all Post Offices and agencies from 5th May 2011 on.

From 9th June 2011 on a special commemorative coin “125 years of the automobile” with a denomination of 10 euros, will be issued, available in banks and savings banks. With a dynamic, modern graphic design based on the circular shape on the steering wheel, both obverse and anverse deal with the theme of individual mobility such as that which the motor car makes possible.

Official presentation of both commemorative editions by the Federal Finance Ministry is to take place in Berlin on 7. June 2011.

Transcending space and time reaches a new dimension with the Benz patent motor car. Carl Benz’s invention is the world’s first automobile, which through its autonomy and availability created the foundation for the individualisation of transport. Starting with the Benz patent motor car, the new means of transport opens up for broad segments of the population broad new horizons and countries undreamed of until then. The associated fascination remains unbroken to this day. And the transport of goods and passengers experiences a dramatic change thanks to the flexibility, performance and economy of the automobile.

The same year as Carl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler builds his first automobile. On 8. March 1886 he orders a carriage from carriage construction factory Wilhelm Wimpff & Sohn in Stuttgart. He has his compact, fast-running petrol engine installed in this carriage. Daimler’s focus is on motorising transport on land, on water and in the air, he never loses sight of the universal application possibilities of the engine he has invented.

The real invention of Carl Benz, who had already carried out his first test runs in October 1885 with his three-wheeled patent motor carriage under exclusion of the public, was the self-sufficient, closed concept of an autonomously driven motor car. It is the first comprehensively conceived automobile – engine, chassis and drive system are exactly adapted and adjusted to each other, forming a unity. The first automobile in the world has a horizontal single-cylinder engine that produces an output of 0.75 hp (0.55 kW) from its displacement volume of 954 cc at a speed of 400 rpm. It can reach a top speed of 16 km/h.

At first, Benz trusts a single front wheel, because he sensibly considers the kind of front-axle steering system used in carriage construction, the turntable steering, to be a technical dead-end alley. It is only after Benz himself invents and patents a “carriage steering mechanism with steering circles tangential to the wheels”, that he builds a four-wheeler from 1893 onwards. With his models Victoria and Vis-à-Vis he returns to typical carriage build, but with the “engine velocipede” a year later, he produces the first automobile of the world made in large-series production.

The patent motor car has its public maiden journey on 3. July 1886 on the Ringstraße in Mannheim. Newspapers report enthusiastically about the event. Benz does not remain idle, satisfied with the first version; he develops the three-wheeler further in several steps, makes it marketable and even builds it in series. And with the vehicle he enjoys international success because he sells it – in particular – abroad. With this Benz is far head of all those other inventors who never manage to go beyond the research stage.

Mercedes-Benz Grabs Spotlight at Pebble Beach Tribute to Birth of Automobile

By Anita Lienert, Correspondent

Just the Facts:
  • Mercedes-Benz will command center stage at a 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance tribute that celebrates the 125th anniversary of the automobile.
  • The August 21 tribute will include some of the earliest vehicles produced by Mercedes-Benz, including the White Knight racecars, coach-built classics and preservation cars.
  • The tribute will also feature the Mercedes-Benz 380K through 770.

PEBBLE BEACH, California — Mother Ursula Shipton, a self-proclaimed witch from the 15th century, foresaw the birth of the automobile, predicting that "carriages without horses shall go, and accidents fill the world with woe." But the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance prefers to focus on all the good things about cars in its celebration of what it calls the 125th anniversary of the automobile.

Mercedes-Benz will be the featured marque in the tribute.

Of course, countless automotive historians have argued for years just when the automobile was born.

Writing in 1950, automotive historian Rudolph Anderson observed: "The automobile was born in the supernatural and bred in the spectacular. Its supernatural beginnings are found in mythology and biblical prophecy which foretold self-moving vehicles of strange design and stranger purpose. Out of these shadowy visions there grew in the minds of men the idea of the automobile, which showmanship and pageantry made the sleek reality of today."

"What or Who's on First" is the title of Chapter 1 of the 1993 book Carriages Without Horses: J. Frank Duryea and the Birth of the American Automobile Industry, by Richard P. Scharchburg, which struggles to pin down the automobile's true birthday. Could it be before the birth of Christ when the prophet Ezekiel spoke of a vehicle with wheels, wings, human faces and features of animals and birds; a mechanical monster snorting with speed and action, as noted in Anderson's The Story of the American Automobile?

"The self-propelled vehicle was, as the old saying goes, 'slow-a-birthing,'" writes Scharchburg.

Nevertheless, the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance organizers feel like blowing out a few candles.

The August 21 tribute to marques that trace their lineage to Benz and Daimler — particularly Mercedes-Benz — will be held on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links. Show organizers said in a statement that the exhibition will "chronicle early racing greats, coach-built classics and preservation cars."

They include the White Knight racecars, including a "Blitzen-Benz," the model that set the world record for the fastest speed on land at 141 mph in 1911. The vehicle is described by show organizers as "similar to a bicycle," with rear wheels that are turned by chains.

The tribute will also feature the Mercedes-Benz 380K through 770.

"From the beginning of the automobile to the modern industry of today, Mercedes-Benz has always been at the apex of automotive technology and style," said Sandra Button, Concours chairman, in a statement.

Inside Line says: We like any excuse for an auto-themed party.

It seems something related to the 125th birthday is comming to the IAA. I´m hearing SLS speedster. Something like the Stirling Moss, but based on the SLS. It won´t share any design element with the SLS. It should feature some hybrid/green tech. It seems Schumi and Rosberg will introduce it. I heard the new SLR concept was comming to the IAA, but now this has replaced that info.
