1M Autocar's Long-term Test Verdict on the BMW 1M Coupé

The BMW 1 Series M Coupé (often referred to as the "1M") is the high-performance model of the E82 coupe range, sold under the BMW M performance sub-brand. While BMW naming convention would have called the car the "M1", an alternate name was chosen to avoid confusion with the BMW M1 supercar from the 1970's. Official website: BMW M

Autocar's Long-term Test Verdict on the BMW 1M Coupé

We've all seen the first drive reviews followed by in-depth tests and shootouts starring BMW's sensational, yet somewhat controversial, 1M Coupé. Built in very limited numbers and offered with an even more limited colour palette – just Alpine White, Sapphire Black and Valencia Orange to choose from – the 1M has met with a fair amount of scepticism from stalwarts of the traditional BMW Motorsport recipe. “It’s not a pure M Car…” and “…it’s a halfway job!” lamenting, old-school fans of BMW M were heard to say.

On paper, at least, such criticism levelled at BMW Motorsport’s latest offering at that time was somewhat justified. Whilst the bodywork, suspension and brakes had been suitably fettled in the course of BMW M’s treatment, the N54 twin-turbo, straight six engine remained ostensibly unchanged from its application in the non-M Z4 sDrive35iS roadster. No option for a swifter-shifting, more efficient M-DCT transmission was offered either with only a six speed manual gearbox being available for purists. On the inside too, enhancement to the interior accoutrements was kept to a minimum. All of this combined led to people asking whether the BMW 1M Coupé was special enough…

The pundits needn’t have worried as it turns out because the 1M Coupé has garnered firm approval from both motoring scribes and owners across the globe. Clarkson lavished praise over the car; Harris enthused prosaically – whilst going rather sideways - on camera during EVO CotY and many more scribes proclaimed in unison that the BMW 1M Coupé was everything that an M Car needed to be. Even GCF’s well-known member AdvEvo (check him out on YouTube) – one of the more vociferous critics of the move away from natural aspiration – heaped praise on the little ‘bahn-stormer following delivery (and some gratuitous opposite-lock shakedowns) of his 1M Coupé.

But what's the car like to live with on a daily basis over a longer term? Autocar's highly experienced and ever-so-talented-behind-the-wheel editor Steve Sutcliffe delivers his verdict on video with their long-term tester having clocked up around 14,000 miles. Once again, for a car of this ilk, the review is a glowing one. Naturally, there are drawbacks such as fuel economy, ride comfort and a minor electronic glitch but in the departments that matter for an M Car to matter the 1M Coupé doesn’t disappoint over the longer term. Saw my first 1M last month in Hanover. Sutcliffe rightly refers to it as a bulldog. It looked massively powerful just parked on the street. But even more impressive is how Sutcliffe absolutely owns the 1M. His car control, just like Harris, is legendary.

I wonder how instrumental Sutcliffe was in Harris acquiring his considerable helmsmanship...

The more I read all these reviews the more impatient I become.
My car has already arrived in the motherland and is waiting in Durban to be sent to Rosslyn for final preparation. The system shows an invoice date of 23rd May, this seems so far away..

Sutcliff's reviews are brilliant. His no-none sense approach married with insight for enthusiasts makes his reviews worthwhile watching. Often I find myself left empty with no food for thought after watching a review which practically says nothing.

Its finally here. My car arrived at the dealer this morning.

The system shows that its already invoiced to them. I'm planning on picking it up on Friday just in time for the weekend...

Same here my friend. I would like to put a face to the legend on GCF.. I will PM you when I go and collect and we can meet at the dealership. Its down the road from you.. :)

The wait is finally over. I went to see my car at the dealership.

I must say my heart stopped a bit when I first saw her.. She is amazing.

The Dealer Principal walked up to me and said "Congratulations, you are one of the few elite that owns this car.. Enjoy"

I just felt like the most important person on planet earth..

Apologies for the crappy pics, all I had with me was my iPhone....

Martin, I would like to meet up with you if you can when I go and pick her up.. I'll PM you the details

What an awesome opportunity and privilege to meet you when you collect one of the most special cars on the planet - I'll be watching my PM like a hawk. :)

Nope, ghusheshe and I met on Friday at the dealer where he was collecting his gorgeous new baby from. Photos were duly taken on smart DSLR and we're waiting for them to make their way into my inbox. They'll be here in due course. :)

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
