Will debut in Beijing this month
Audi has uploaded several design sketches of a crossover which will be unveiled later this month at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show.

Details about the car are not available at this point but the photo caption says "Audi showcar Beijing 2014" so it will likely be unveiled on April 20 during the show's press day. Chances are these design sketches depict a concept which will serve as a preview for the Q4 crossover.

The car's design strongly resembles the allroad shooting brake concept showed back in January at NAIAS and indicates future Audi models will draw their styling cues from the recently unveiled third generation TT. The five-door concept features a large chromed front grille flanked by slender LED headlights and comes with large vents as well as a clamshell hood.

These design sketches also show a curved roof, prominent wheel arches hosting large alloys, while at the back there are two round exhaust pipes joined by a chromed bar with the "quattro" lettering. Inside the cabin there are four individual seats with the possibility of folding flat the rear ones to extend cargo area.

A press release should arrive in the following hours.

It's obviously based on the new TT / Shooting Brake concept.

edit: Front grille is octagonal and not hexagonal like in current Audi models.

There is a similar idea under conception at BMW mixing the Z series and the X series under the name "Y"
But it is not the first time BMW have done something like this.
Take the Z18 for example. The chassis of the BMW X5 with the V8 from the M5 and Z8, or indeed the Z1 Coupe or indeed the BMW Xcoupe concept.

These are ideas being re-visited in order to expand to more youthful customers who want a sports car but need the solidity of an SUV , All wheel drive and practicality.
So a TT SUV does make sense , it applies to the growth in SUV concepts favoured by many leading markets and it expands the profit line for a niche model.

My favourite idea being discussed especially today's era of sustainability is a re-imagining of the Just 4/2. Especially now with advantages in Carbon Fibre specifically with BMW and the potential of sharing with BMW Motorrad in either a two cylinder or even an electric motor in a lightweight chassis.
It has been many years since I drove it but I still remember it was absolutely brilliant.

The other day one of the Audi officials (was it the R&D chief or the head of design ... I don't recall) said TT series could get a more "family friendly & oriented" variant in the future, beside the Coupe & Roadster. I guess this is it. TT Alroad? TTQ? Q4? Whatever it will called ...

Features a 408 PS hybrid powertrain
Audi has unveiled the TT offroad concept today in Beijing, showing the company's intentions to roll out a TT-based crossover.

Audi already dropped a few hints about expanding the third-gen TT family lineup and it seems one of the potential candidates is a crossover. The concept is described as blending the "sportiness of a coupe with the lifestyle and utility of a compact SUV" but as far as styling is concerned it looks basically like the new TT on high heels.

It has a hybrid powertrain encompassing a 4-cylinder 2.0-liter TFSI engine with 292 PS (215 kW) and 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) working together with two electric motors delivering an additional 115 PS (85 kW) and 199 lb-ft (270 Nm) to generate a combined output of 408 PS (300 kW) and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm). This hardware setup allows the TT offroad concept reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.2 seconds and an electronically-capped top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h) or 80 mph (130 km/h) when relying solely on electric power.

Audi says the vehicle has a 54:46 weight distribution and thanks to the 12 kWh battery it can travel in electric mode for up to 31 miles (50 km) while as a hybrid it will do up to 546 miles (880 km). Fuel consumption stands at just 1.9 liters / 100 km (123 mpg US or 148 mpg UK) with corresponding CO2 emissions of 45 g/km.

In terms of dimensions it resembles the Q3 but it's 8 cm lower and has received massive 21-inch alloy wheels wrapped around in 255/40 tires. The 2014 TT-derived interior can host up to four people on slim sport seats and in the trunk there's a custom box with a 1:8 scale RC car along with space for tools and battery. If more cargo room is required, the individual rear seats can be folded almost flat to enable a wide load area.

Additional details can be found in the attached press release.

Where's Audi going with all those off-road concepts? First A3 off-road concept, then supercharged off-road concept, now TT off-road concept. No direct rivals to X4 and X6 / MLC? Is this TT Off-road suppose to rival X4? And the A3 Off-road Coupe to rival GLA & the upcoming X2? If so, where's the X6/MLC rival - the Q8? Still to be premiered as a concept? In Moscow perhaps?

They are making circles around the same design concept for years. A simple SUV design, marketing the benefits of Quattro AWD, sold in three different shapes. It can be called good value-for-money for what it offers, it's a great package as a total, but then again, it's nothing exciting.

Audi needs to up their game design-wise. Even I, that despise most of those models, feel that Audi is lagging in this department. Competition is intense, and they desperately need two different SUV lines, a typical boxy, utility SUV with good off road capabilities, and then a lifestyle version. BMW has found a winning formula and MB follows, which is something that should get Audi worried.

Audi did it with their 4-door models. You have A4 and then A5 SB. You have A6 and then A7. Why not have a SAV/ SAC pair as well?

PS. Oh dear, did I just say this?

:D

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
