With news like that, I feel as if I am left behind, given that I still refuse to get myself a smartphone...

Massive dislike, people are blind behind the wheel as it is, we don't need more distraction.

This is an optional feature correct? I like to buy whatever car I like without having this operating system shoved onto my face. More importantly, when is the android version going to be released?

Suspect CarPlay may be optional and may be released already in 2014. Works with the iPhone 5s, 5c and 5. Works with Siri. Other automakers supporting it are said to be the BMW Group, Ford, GM, Honda, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan and PSA. No news about the Android version yet. MB Passion is in Geneva now and will try to find out more. :)

PS. No news yet, if existing vehicles can be upgraded. The Drive Kit Plus offers somewhat similar functionality and is already available as upgrade kit: http://www.drive-kit-plus.com/en/#s/start

The DriveKit Plus works together with the Digital DriveStyle App, whose latest version was just released: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/digital-drivestyle-app/id518868239

We have infotainmaint now. How this is any different ? It is just improved from Apple's own perspective.

People are getting more and more distracted behind the wheel, and we are giving them even more option to do so.

In fact here in Sydney, and NSW in general, the government has made it illegal for anyone to even hold onto any mobile/portable device while driving.

We have the same rule and black points are involved too. But this isn't your phone, right ? or I am completely misunderstanding the concept ?

I don't use my phone much while driving but I still need the Nav, Music library and some other options. Current OEM Navs sucks and doesn't update regularly over-the-air.

It seems like it is an extension of your phone?

Apple took a dip into in-car infotainment with CarPlay, a touchscreen entertainment system standard that lets you pair your car with your iPhone (or other iOS device, like an iPad or an iPod Touch), and get its car-optimized iOS interface, so your stuff goes around places with you.

Not that today's car entertainment systems don't already take input from analog 3.5 mm aux jacks, or USB storage devices, to solve the centralized music library problem; CarPlay extends your iPhone's interface to a dash-touchscreen, so you can run your favorite local apps, not to forget Apple Maps, without your car featuring a GPS transceiver of its own.

CarPlay isn't something you buy and upgrade your car with, at least not yet. Apple is wooing car makers with it, and companies that have expressed interest include BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corp.

Volvo is also a part of this alliance. This is the issued press release:

Volvo Cars and Apple forge global alliance

Volvo Car Group (Volvo Cars) and Apple Inc. (Apple) are joining forces to make Apple’s widely-used and hugely admired operating system available to drivers, bringing together one of the world’s most progressive car companies and the world’s most famous technology company.

The alliance promises to transform the in-car experience. Called Apple CarPlay, the new service brings all the features and services familiar to iPad, iPhone or iPod users directly into the car via Volvo Cars' large centre console touch screen display.

Volvo Cars enhances Apple’s capabilities by linking them to a specially-developed interface that allows drivers to use voice and steering wheel controls to access Apple features and services, ensuring the entire interaction is always safe and easy to use.

The interaction between Apple’s operating system and Volvo Cars' newly-designed in car software and interface promise to transform the look and feel of a car’s interior. Volvo Cars' interiors will be characterised by their simplicity and functionality, two qualities that unite both Volvo Cars and Apple.

“Apple’s clean and intuitive user interface is a perfect match with Volvo’s Scandinavian Design approach and our focus on fluid functionality,” says Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars.

The first car to offer Apple CarPlay will be the all new XC90 SUV which will be introduced later in 2014, one of the most anticipated cars of recent years, replacing the original XC90, which redefined the SUV and became the best selling model in Volvo Cars' history.

With Apple CarPlay, users will immediately recognise their basic iPhone applications, such as phone, messages, music and navigation. The initial offer also features third party audio apps including Spotify, the popular music streaming service.

Volvo Cars' portrait screen gives users the benefit of having both Volvo Cars and Apple content co-existing simultaneously, removing the need to switch between a dedicated car and iPhone screen.

Apple CarPlay integrates seamlessly with the Volvo Cars' new user interface. Visually, it becomes part of the on-board system, displaying well-known icons for Apple applications.

“iPhone users will feel completely at home in a new Volvo. We have created a wholly-integrated user experience in our large portrait-oriented touch screen that takes the in-car mobile device experience to a new level. That, coupled with the obvious driver safety benefits of an advanced voice control system like Siri, made Apple a perfect match for Volvo,” says Håkan Samuelsson.

Smooth connection

Apple CarPlay allows connection of the device to the car through a Lightning cable – with Wi-Fi coming in the near future. The connection is based on a streaming H.264 video feed that returns user input from the touchscreen. Apple CarPlay will be available in forthcoming Volvo models based on the new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), starting with the all-new Volvo XC90 later in 2014.

BTW, not to forget, as an example of an Android based system, in 2011 AMG introduced this one. Runs on the COMAND screen. :)

The Drive Kit Plus for the iPhone 5 (Code B62) is not available ex factory for the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, B-Class, CLA and GLA (W176, W246, C117, X156) at present. It was supposed to become available from the factory starting in April and is delayed for unknown reasons according to MB Passion. But it's still available from MB Accessories as an aftermarket kit, currently with introductory pricing for the iPhone 5 for EU499, plus installation. :)

We've confirmed that at least Mercedes-Benz is looking into aftermarket installations of CarPlay that will allow older models of vehicles to access the feature. While the company confirmed that it is trying to get an "an after-market solution for previous cars" it couldn't confirm when the option might become available. While there is no info yet on how the aftermarket installation would work, we'd imagine it will be a dealer installed accessory for select older models like Honda and others already offer for Apple's Siri Eyes Free feature.

Maybe it's because I own Apple everything, am typing this on a Macbook Air and have an iPhone and live in San Francisco where we all worship the giant Apple logo but I'm really excited for this! The only thing I'm concerned with is Siri. She's still getting a lot of commands wrong.. Hopefully this comes out with more Siri fixes/new commands.

It's interesting how Apple have completely hidden the fact that it's car play is actually running of Blackberry's QNX operating system. This is the first time that Apple is not entirely in charge of hardware since the birth of iOS - it will be interesting to see how Apple manages this.

Overall though, this is a very welcomed change.

More importantly, when is the android version going to be released?

Google announced the open automotive alliance 2 months ago, which will enable car manufacturers to integrate Android into vehicles. Still in it's infancy, but I think 2015 is when we will see it become more mainstream. Some of the current manufacturers that have joined this alliance include Audi, Honda, Hyundai & GM.

More info here: http://www.openautoalliance.net/#about

May likely debut in 2015. And can probably not be retrofitted.
