The performance brand from Mercedes-Benz celebrates its anniversary - 45 years of AMG: growth with performance

45 years of AMG: anniversary marks the start of a new era - 45 years of AMG: growth with performance

(Affalterbach, Jun 15, 2012) -- As part of the anniversary marking "45 years of AMG", Mercedes-AMG is providing an exclusive glimpse of the highlights of the A 45 AMG. With the powerful new top-of-the-range A-Class model, the performance brand from Mercedes-Benz is marking the start of a new era. For the first time in the 45-year history of the company, AMG will offer an exciting high-performance vehicle in the compact class. The A 45 AMG is representative of the ambitious future strategy entitled "AMG Performance 50", leading up to the 50th anniversary of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. Based on a unique model offensive comprising additional high-performance compact cars as well as a number of AMG cars in higher classes featuring highly efficient drive systems, the company from Affalterbach is giving out clear signals for dynamic growth. And the offensive is all set to get under way this summer with new models including the SLS AMG GT and the GL 63 AMG.

The AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine specially developed for the A 45 AMG is expected to set new standards in its displacement class: with maximum torque significantly above 400 Nm and low consumption levels, AMG is aiming to take the leading position among the competition. "Our goal is to build the most dynamic, most powerful and at the same time most efficient four-cylinder series production compact car. Together with other future high-performance compact cars, the new A 45 AMG will embody exclusive dynamism and the "AMG Performance 50" growth strategy. With this passionate commitment to what for us is a new vehicle segment, Mercedes-AMG plans to make a significant contribution to the growth of Mercedes-Benz Cars", according to Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Perfect power transmission is ensured in the A 45 AMG thanks to the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission with dual clutch technology and performance-oriented all-wheel drive. The ideal basis for high cornering speeds and exciting, agile handling also comes courtesy of the AMG sports suspension with independently developed front and rear axles, electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, AMG high-performance braking system and 3-stage ESP® with "SPORT Handling" mode.

Driving performance for the new generation – world premiere in the first quarter of 2013
With the new A 45 AMG - the top-of-the-range Mercedes-Benz A-Class model – Mercedes-AMG is addressing a new target group: falling within an age range from 30 up to around 45, the target group is younger than the classic AMG customer. Professionally successful and independent, these customers are looking for a compact, dynamic and individual vehicle. They want to express their stylish, trend-oriented lifestyle with a car from a recognised performance brand. By being available at an attractive price, the A 45 AMG will appeal to prospective new customers and help to open up new markets.

The A 45 AMG will celebrate its world premiere in the first quarter of 2013. Further AMG high-performance compact cars with a variety of different characteristic features are already in the pipeline and will follow on the heels of the A 45 AMG. When it came to the development of the compact Mercedes-Benz vehicle architecture for front and all-wheel drive, Mercedes-AMG has been involved from the very beginning. The most dynamic versions of the A-Class, namely the A 250 Sport and the A 220 CDI Sport – both "engineered by AMG" – currently already feature a front axle developed by AMG as well as a correspondingly tuned suspension, AMG 5-spoke light-alloy wheels with 235/40 R 18 tyres all round, painted in high-gloss black and with a high-sheen finish, and also red-painted brake callipers. The "Sport" designation is always used to characterise the most dynamic model series versions in the Mercedes-Benz product range.

Even more future AMG models with all-wheel drive
All-wheel drive is set to play a bigger role at Mercedes-AMG in the future too – being offered not just for SUVs and off-road vehicles, but also for other AMG high-performance vehicles. Mercedes-AMG currently has four all-wheel-drive models in its range: the ML 63 AMG, the G 63 AMG, the G 65 AMG and the GL 63 AMG. To mark the start of the new era, in 2013 the new A 45 AMG will be launched with a performance-oriented all-wheel drive system as standard.

Consistent growth strategy: "AMG Performance 50"
AMG is enjoying strong demand for its vehicles, particularly in its three largest markets where the performance brand has witnessed extremely dynamic growth in the past year. Sales have increased by seven percent in the USA, 15 percent in Germany and almost 50 percent in China.

This growth is continuing in 2012. In the first quarter of the year AMG recorded growth of more than 30 percent, making it the best first quarter in the company's history. As a result AMG is looking to continue its consistent growth beyond 2012 and to make a significant contribution to the sales achieved by Mercedes-Benz Cars. Based on the ambitious future strategy entitled "AMG Performance 50", in the coming years AMG will be launching further unique high-performance models. According to Ola Källenius: "We have decided to expand our model range from its current level of 22 vehicles to around 30 vehicles in the future. We are looking to increase our global sales, which today stand at around 20,000 vehicles, to more than 30,000 vehicles by the time of our 50th anniversary, and thereby assert our leading position in this exclusive segment." In addition to the new performance compact car, the SLS AMG GT and the GL 63 AMG, in the future the S-Class segment will play an even greater role at AMG. The current offering comprising the S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG, as well as the CL 63 AMG and CL 65 AMG, will be extended further over the coming years.

To meet the increasing demand, AMG is also expanding its production capacity accordingly. As a result, the new AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine will be produced at the Mercedes-Benz MDC Power engine production plant in Kölleda. This is where four-cylinder engines for the A- and B-Class are normally produced, and a specific assembly line is being set up for the new AMG engine. Of course the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engines will also be produced in line with the traditional AMG philosophy of "one man, one engine". A characteristic feature of this production principle is the AMG engine badge bearing the signature of the responsible engineer.

Around 350 AMG Performance Centers by the 50th anniversary of Mercedes-AMG GmbH
The "AMG Performance 50" growth strategy also includes opening up new dynamic markets. AMG see significant potential for increasing demand in countries such as China, Russia, Korea and Brazil. Playing a central role as part of this strategy are the AMG Performance Centers: some 270 Centers have been opened in 24 countries around the globe since 2008, and there are plans to increase this number to around 350 Performance Centers by 2017. A current example for the regional growth strategy is China: the new AMG Performance Center Beijing Sanlitun opened on 22 April 2012 is situated in an exclusive prime location in the luxury Sanlitun Village North shopping mall, and reflects the pioneering role played by AMG when it comes to design and technology in a modern setting. Unlike previously, the new store in Beijing is not integrated into a Mercedes-Benz dealership as part of a "shop-in-shop" system. Instead, it is based on a so-called standalone concept, and focuses exclusively on the products and features of the AMG performance brand.

Expansion of the excellent service quality enjoyed by all AMG customers
An important part of the "AMG Performance 50" dynamic growth strategy is the expansion of the excellent service quality enjoyed by all AMG customers. With immediate effect, more intensive customer care will allow for vehicles to be collected direct from the AMG headquarters – where AMG customers can learn all about the spirit of Affalterbach in the AMG theme area. In a new, 360-square-metre delivery hall, AMG customers can now take receipt of their new high-performance vehicle direct from AMG.

After being welcomed by a personal customer service attendant in the AMG Private Lounge, which was opened in 2011, the programme comprises an exclusive tour of the plant. This also includes a visit to the AMG Performance Studio, where individual and one-off AMG vehicles are developed and produced in limited numbers. This is followed by a tour of the AMG engine production facility: here AMG customers have the unique opportunity to meet the engineers who have produced the engine of their high-performance vehicle by hand in accordance with the traditional philosophy "one man, one engine".

"AMG Performance 50" helps to reduce fleet consumption
Another goal of "AMG Performance 50" is the consistent reduction of fleet consumption. According to Ola Källenius: "By the 50th anniversary of AMG, we want to achieve CO2 emissions of around 200 grams per kilometre for the entire AMG model range. Our new AMG compact cars will of course help us to achieve this ambitious plan, but we are also aiming for a significant reduction in fuel consumption for other model series too. Many AMG models are currently already the "best in class" when it comes to consumption, emissions, maximum performance and torque. Our success is based on state-of-the-art technology."

Acting as a role model in this area is the SLK 55 AMG. The eight-cylinder roadster incorporates Formula 1 technology for the road. It uses the world's most fuel-efficient V8 engine which features the newly developed AMG Cylinder Management cylinder shut-off system. Adapted from the world of Formula 1, this technology enables the SLK 55 AMG to achieve a fuel consumption level which at 8.4 litres is 30% lower, and CO2 emissions of 195 grams per kilometre (NEDC combined). The technology is used in a similar way in the approx. 750 hp Mercedes-Benz V8 engines found in Formula 1. As efficiency also plays a major role at the pinnacle of motor racing, four cylinders are disabled by shutting off the fuel injection when the driver has lower load demands.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-CELL is further proof of the pioneering role played by Mercedes-AMG in the development of intelligent drive concepts. The drivetrain with high-voltage lithium-ion battery for the new SLS AMG E-CELL is produced in cooperation with experts from Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth in the UK. The SLS AMG E-CELL will celebrate its premiere this autumn at the Paris Motor Show. Mercedes-AMG will be launching a series production run of the first purely electric driven super sports car, and the first customers are expected to take delivery of this gullwing model with electric drive in 2013.

Both the SLS AMG E-CELL and the V8 engine with cylinder shut-off system in the SLK 55 AMG are examples of the goal to achieve a sustainable improvement in efficiency and a reduction in fleet consumption.

"AMG Lightweight Performance" design strategy
A further building block adopted from the world of motorsport is in the area of lightweight construction - less weight means better performance and lower fuel consumption. As part of its ambitious "AMG Lightweight Performance" lightweight construction strategy, Mercedes-AMG will continue to apply consistent measures to reduce vehicle weight. Through their experience with the SLR, the AMG Black Series vehicles and in motorsport, Mercedes-Benz and AMG have accumulated more than 10 years of expertise in working with carbon-fibre materials.

AMG currently makes the propshaft for the SLS AMG, for example, out of carbon fibre. In the SLS Roadster, the supporting structure for the draught-stop is made as standard as a carbon-fibre sandwich structure. This component, with extremely short cycle times in an industrially oriented manufacturing process, already demonstrates what will be possible in the future. Carbon-fibre is also used in the SLS AMG E-CELL: the carbon-fibre monocoque for the battery is an integral part of the body shell and connected to the aluminium spaceframe.

In the case of the SL 63 AMG and SL 65 AMG, for the first time the internal support for the boot lid is mass-produced from a lightweight carbon-fibre composite material. A completely new feature is the carbon-fibre rear panel with roll-over bar, available from the AMG Performance Studio as an exclusive optional extra for the C 63 AMG Coupé AMG Black Series. The high-strength, elegantly designed carbon-fibre component forms an integral part of the body and helps to reduce the vehicle weight by more than seven kilograms compared with a regular rear panel made of sheet steel.

Future strategy for all V12 engines lies with Mercedes-AMG
In the future, both the development responsibility as well as the production competence for all Mercedes-Benz-brand V12 engines will lie with Mercedes-AMG. Currently AMG produces the M 279 AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine motor for the S 65 AMG, CL 65 AMG, SL 65 AMG and G 65 AMG. In the future, all twelve-cylinder engines for upcoming Mercedes models will be developed in Affalterbach, and manufactured in the AMG production facility in accordance with the traditional philosophy "one man, one engine".

AMG Sports package as a factor of success
A further component of the "AMG Performance 50" growth strategy is the consistent enhancement of the AMG Sports package. This dynamic optional extra is available for numerous Mercedes models and includes such attractive options as AMG bodystyling, AMG light-alloy wheels and the AMG sports suspension. The continually increasing demand for the AMG Sports package has induced Mercedes-AMG to enhance the range further. Currently around 25 percent of all Mercedes vehicles worldwide are delivered with the AMG Sports package – in 2011 alone more than 300,000 customers opted for a Mercedes-Benz with the AMG Sports package.

An attractive entry into the world of AMG is currently already afforded by the A 250 Sport and the A 220 CDI Sport, as well as the special variants of the C-Class, the C 250 Sport and C 250 CDI Sport, in whose development the performance specialists of AMG have been consistently involved. In addition to the visually enhanced AMG Sports package Plus, both models comprise a host of technical features developed exclusively by AMG to increase driving pleasure.

AMG Driving Academy on the road to success
The AMG Driving Academy also focuses on providing an intensive experience. The wide-ranging programme of events, which is being continually expanded, not only meets the most diverse requirements but also represents the very embodiment of pure excitement. Events on offer include enjoyment-oriented EMOTION tours, special winter driving training sessions in Swedish Lapland and exciting events on legendary racing circuits such as the North Loop of the Nürburgring, the Hockenheimring or Zandvoort. A particular highlight is the MASTERS programme, at which participants are able to drive the SLS AMG GT3, the racing version of the gullwing model. Participants who are resident in Germany also have the chance to acquire a national DMSB (German Motorsport Federation) driver's licence.

All of the AMG Driving Academy's events in Europe represent the perfect combination of driving pleasure and environmental awareness. The quantity of CO2 emissions of a Driving Academy event is determined on the basis of its so-called "carbon footprint" and this can be offset by involvement in climate protection projects. AMG Driving Academy training events now take place in Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Sweden and Spain, as well as the USA, China and India. Based on increasing customer interest, Mercedes-AMG is currently working on expanding the programme to such markets as Australia, Japan, Russia and the United Arab Emirates. In addition, the AMG Driving Academy also offers tailor-made events for corporate customers as well as a variety of other different markets. Demand is constantly on the increase and reflects the impressive success story which the AMG Driving Academy has enjoyed. In 2011 more than 7000 participants attended an AMG Driving Academy event – and this trend is on the up.

Motorsport serves as a source of inspiration for the AMG engineers
AMG was founded in 1967 by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, and from the very outset has achieved numerous successes in the field of motorsport. Today, as in the past, a commitment to the race track continues to form the brand's main source of inspiration. The former two-man company currently employs a workforce of more than 1000 at its plant in Affalterbach, and over the past 45 years has become the technological spearhead and a one hundred percent subsidiary of Daimler AG. The professionalism of Mercedes-Benz's performance brand is defined by its pursuit of high performance, precision and efficiency. As the first vehicle developed independently by Mercedes-AMG, the SLS AMG super sports car unveiled in 2009 proves to impressive effect the competence and passion which exists at the company headquarters in Affalterbach. The AMG brand promise of "Driving Performance" stands for state-of-the-art technology and pure driving excitement.

With its roots seated firmly in motorsport, the AMG performance brand has been at home on the race track for decades – from its position as the most successful brand in the history of the DTM, through to its global commitment to customer motorsport at the highest level with the SLS AMG GT3. Having secured 26 victories and the FIA GT3 European championship, the SLS AMG GT3 was the most successful newcomer in the 2011 motorsports season. When it comes to Formula 1, AMG has been an official partner for 17 years, and has been helping to ensure that safety is maintained on the racing circuits by providing the Official F1™ Safety Car and the Official F1™ Medical Car since 1996. And since the start of 2012 the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 team with Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher has also been lining up on the starting grid too.

The 'family photo' included in the press kit for the 45th anniversary of AMG showcases the current portfolio of the Affalterbach firm, but it also reveals eight new models that shall be added the next five years. As the cars are hidden under silver, AMG-branded covers, the curiosity factor grows exponentially. So we have decided to give it a try and guess which new cars is Mercedes-AMG talking about. You can also express your own opinions on this subject by posting your comments.

Not an entirely a new addition in terms of market segment, but an all new generation - this is clearly the future S-Class AMG (W 222). Unique silhouette and the traditional upright Mercedes-Benz grille are our key arguments for this choice.

The dropping roofline and the longer body hint at the upcoming CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake (X 218)

This appears to be a mid-sized limousine. The traditional grille and the Star logo sitting on the engine bonnet tell us this could be the next C-Class AMG variant (W 205).

Car 1 - Look at the long bonnet and the impressive grille that sketch under the cover: this is most certainly the 2015 SLC AMG supercar.

Car 2 - Again, a rather sedan-ish architecture, but somehow sportier and coupe-ish. This could as well be the forthcoming CLA 25 AMG or the 2015 C-Coupe AMG (C 205).

Car 3 - The angle is a bit confusing (SUV or MPV?), but we believe this has more chances of being the 2014 GLA 45 AMG (X 156) than a current generation B-Class AMG (W 246). The radiator grille looks to be more upright and the entire front fascia feels more solid and imposing.

Car 4 - One very boxy, rugged shape and very specific grille and front apron: this is the first-ever GLK-Class AMG (X 204).

Car 5 - Not hard at all: the hatchback body signals the advent of the new A 45 AMG.

I think Number 1 is the SLS AMG Black Series. The silhouete almost gives that away, and they have playfully not put it in line with the rest of the SLS column.
SLC might not have made it here. as it is about 4-5 years out.

AMG performance division shows off full lineup

This week saw a homecoming of sorts for Mercedes-Benz's AMG performance division.

In 2012, California accounted for more than a third of all AMG sales in the U.S. So the German automaker brought nearly its entire 2013 AMG lineup to Willow Springs Raceway in Rosamond to show off to the media.

Notable among all the machinery were two of the fastest models in the AMG lineup: the 2013 SLS AMG GT coupe and roadster, and the already-sold-out C63 AMG Black Series Coupe. Examples of these cars were available for track testing, while the rest of AMG's lineup was limited to street drives.

Californians have been fans of AMG vehicles since they first went on sale in the U.S. in 1995, said Robert Moran, U.S. manager of AMG vehicles. Moran said several factors contribute to the sub-brand's popularity here.

"There's a huge enthusiasm for cars in general," Moran said of California. "But also there's a tremendous amount of wealth." The median income of an AMG buyer is $431,000 -- more than double the $191,000 median income of a Mercedes buyer, according to the automaker.

AMG products also sell well in California because buyers can drive them year-round, Moran said.
"It's performance you can drive every day," Moran said, an observation echoing our 2012 test of the SLS AMG roadster.

AMG has been selling vehicles in the U.S. since 1995, when the company put the C36 sedan on sale. At the time AMG was not yet owned by Mercedes-Benz, although its vehicles were sold at Mercedes dealerships. In 1999DaimlerChrysler bought a majority stake in AMG, and by 2005 AMG was a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mercedes.

The 2013 AMG product line now includes a version of almost every vehicle Mercedes-Benz makes, including sedans (C, E and S-Class), SUVs (ML, GL and G), convertibles (SLK and SL) and coupes (CLS and CL).

The SLS AMG coupe and roadster that went on sale in 2011 was the first car AMG built from the ground up without relying on a previous Mercedes model. It was the updated version of this car, now dubbed the SLS AMG GT, that served as the focus for AMG's track testing at Willow Springs.

Highway 1 also logged some track time in the limited-edition C63 AMG Black Series. Street drives included the S63 and S65 sedans, the CL 63 and CL 65 full-size coupes, and the SL63 and SL65 hardtop convertibles.

^ Agreed, those might be in the top row, to the left and right while the middle one looks like the CLS 63 AMG SB? :)

After seeing the XWB spyshots suspect this is the XWB AMG. :)

Thus there wont be a Pullman AMG. The Pullman may come standard with GUARD instead?

Market launch for 18 new Mercedes-AMG high-performance models: Performance meets efficiency

Mercedes-AMG sets the pace: This June witnesses the premieres of 18 new AMG high-performance models at Mercedes-Benz dealerships. With a power output spectrum ranging from 265 kW (360 hp) to 552 kW (751 hp), the new AMG vehicles demonstrate both performance and superb efficiency. This unrivalled model initiative from Mercedes-AMG represents the embodiment of the "AMG Performance 50" future strategy in the run-up to the 50th birthday of Mercedes-AMG GmbH in 2017.

Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: "The market launch of 18 new AMG modelsreflects our consistent focus on performance, dynamism and growth. The A 45 AMG will appeal to new customers and tap into new markets. The C 63 AMG "Edition 507", available in Coupé, Saloon and Estate variants, is a sporty model, full of character, for all fans of our high-capacity V8 naturally aspirated engine. We also have a broad range of new S-Models and 4MATIC all-wheel drive variants of the E 63 AMG and CLS 63 AMG – allowing our customers to benefit from tailor-made individuality. The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series and the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive epitomise the state of the art in technical terms when it comes to the development of outstanding super sports cars."

A 45 AMG: the beginning of a new era

The A 45 AMG sees Mercedes-AMG embarking on a new era. For the first time in a company history that extends back over more than 45 years, Mercedes-Benz's performance brand is offering a fascinating high-performance vehicle in the compact class. With a maximum output of 265 kW (360 hp) and maximum torque of 450 newton metres, the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine is the most powerful four-cylinder engine in series production anywhere in the world. Its fuel consumption of 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres according to NEDC combined means that the A 45 AMG leads its segment in this respect as well. New standards are also set by the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. The fully equipped A 45 AMG "Edition 1" offers an expressive combination of exclusive exterior and interior details that cannot fail to fascinate.

C 63 AMG "Edition 507" as Coupé, Saloon and Estate

The C 63 AMG models are set to become an even more dynamic proposition: in exclusive "Edition 507" guise, the AMG high-performance models are equipped with an uprated AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine. The 37 kW (50 hp) boost to 373 kW (507 hp), combined with maximum torque of 610 Nm, derives from the transfer of technology from the SLS AMG, with the forged pistons, connecting rods and lightweight crankshaft adopted from the super sports car's eight-cylinder naturally aspirated engine. The C 63 AMG "Edition 507" accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 / 4.3 seconds and has a top speed of 280 km/h. An AMG high-performance braking system with red brake callipers comes as standard. The C 63 AMG "Edition 507" will appeal to those who aspire to a sporty driving style, who will relish the high-calibre technology and numerous exclusive design and equipment features.

E 63 AMG: With 4MATIC and as S-Model

The new E 63 AMG is also available with immediate effect as a particularly exclusive and powerful S-Model with an output of 430 kW (585 hp) and 800 newton metres of torque, along with the newly developed, performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. The all-wheel drive system is also available as an option for the other E 63 AMG models – in this case the output of the V8 engine increases from the earlier figure of 386 kW (525 hp) and 700 Nm to 410 kW (557 hp) with torque of 720 Nm. Fuel consumption according to NEDC combined ranges from 9.8 to 10.5 litres per 100 km.

CLS 63 AMG: The new benchmark

Performance update for the CLS 63 AMG: the CLS 63 AMG, in both Coupé and Shooting Brake variants, joins the E 63 AMG in benefiting from the latest model enhancements. In its S-Model guise, the CLS 63 AMG is similarly equipped with the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system and features the AMG 5.5-litre biturbo engine with a top performance of 430 kW (585 hp) and maximum torque of 800 newton metres. The variant with 410 kW (557 hp) and 720 newton metres is also available as an option with the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. The fuel consumption ranges between 9.9 and 10.6 litres per 100 km (NEDC combined).

SLS AMG Coupé Black Series: GT3 performance for the road

The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is the high-end super sports version of the gullwing model. Inspired by the SLS AMG GT3 racing version, the fifth Mercedes-AMG Black Series model boasts a fascinating mix of breathtaking design, outstanding driving dynamics and uncompromising lightweight construction in accordance with the "AMG Lightweight Performance" strategy. With a DIN kerb weight of 1550 kilograms, the SLS AMG Black Series achieves a power-to-weight ratio of 2.45 kg/hp. The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine generates a power output of 464 kW (631 hp) at 7400 rpm and accelerates the most dynamic road-going gullwing model of all time to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds.

SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive: the most powerful electric sports car in the world

With the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive, Mercedes-AMG is entering a new era: the locally emission-free super sports car featuring advanced technology from the world of Formula 1 represents the most exclusive and dynamic form of electric motoring. The current most powerful AMG high-performance vehicle has four electric motors producing a total output of 552 kW (751 hp) and maximum torque of 1000 newton metres. As a result, the gullwing model has acquired the status of the world's fastest electrically-powered series production vehicle: the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. Meanwhile, the exclusively tuned "SLS eSound" means that this matchless driving experience stirs the emotions acoustically too in typical AMG fashion. Outstanding driving dynamics are ensured by the AMG Torque Dynamics with wheel-selective all-wheel drive. The extremely powerful high-voltage battery is the outcome of the cooperation between Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth (GB). The Formula 1 experts in Great Britain were able to take advantage here of their extensive experience with KERS Hybrid.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive recently circled the Nürburgring Nordschleife (“north loop”) in a record time of 7:56.234 minutes. Therefore, the electric AMG super sports car is at the same time the first electrically-powered series production vehicle, which masters the legendary race track in under eight minutes.

Special experience: delivery at AMG Customer Centre in Affalterbach

As an alternative to the classic vehicle delivery method at dealerships and authorised agents of Mercedes-Benz, customers may choose to take delivery of their AMG high-performance vehicle direct from the AMG Customer Centre in Affalterbach. When collecting their vehicle in this way, customers are able to gain an exclusive insight into the world of AMG and experience the excellent quality of customer care that is so typical of AMG. After being welcomed by a personal customer service advisor and treated to some hospitality in the AMG Private Lounge, they are taken on a tour of the plant. This also includes a visit to the AMG Performance Studio, where some very distinctive limited-run AMG vehicles and one-off models are developed and produced by hand. In the AMG engine production facility, AMG customers are also able to experience the way engines are individually hand-assembled, in accordance with the traditional philosophy of "one man, one engine."

The ultimate highlight of the day is then of course the handover of the new AMG vehicle: customers are given a thorough introduction to the technical features and controls of their new model in the 360 square-metre delivery hall. Vehicle collection at the AMG Customer Centre in Affalterbach is available to customers in Germany for all AMG high-performance models.

Mercedes-Benz AMG confirms GLA45 AMG, plans SLC-Class

6d66503b3390d70698c074e0adb69d20.webp

Ola Källenius has confirmed the AMG performance division will add the Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG to its line-up next year, along with an SLS AMG replacement and other bespoke sports cars down the track.

Speaking at a round-table interview at the Frankfurt motor show, Kallenius reaffirmed AMG’s position to reach 30 models and beyond 30,000 units by 2017, which coincides with the Affalterbach company’s 50th anniversary, up from last year’s 22 models and 20,000 sales. “We will actually launch even more cars next year than we’re launching this year,” begins Kallenius.

“For the five years here [between 2012 and 2017] it’s eight new models without the predecessor, one of which you can see the series version as a world premiere here today in Frankfurt. It’s no great secret that we’re going to give that [GLA-Class] the same treatment as we gave the A45 AMG.”

Not only is the GLA45 AMG now confirmed, but Kallenius went further, describing it as a “next year car”. The GLA45 AMG will use the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the A45 AMG, which produces 265kW of power and 450Nm of torque.

Kallenius cited history when asked whether, following on from AMG’s first foray into building a four-cylinder hot hatch, whether the creation of a four-cylinder SUV was a step too far for AMG. “When we launched the original ML55, it was the first true performance SUV. A lot of people said, ‘Performance and SUV? Does that really match?’. Now the performance SUV as a whole is 40 per cent of the performance segment – it’s unbelievable.”

Despite this push towards SUVs, however, Kallenius refused to confirm that the second of the planned seven new models AMG will introduce in the next four years will be the new-generation Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class. “GLK … there are no plans for that. What the future brings we shall see. We have not made any ultimate decision in one or the other direction, the ML covers a pretty wide spectrum there in the middle, and we thought we should focus on the ML.

“Now we have the GLA at the entry point, whether there’s space in between at the performance level… don’t know, no current plans at this stage.”

When it was put to Kallenius that the introduction of another six new AMG models in the next four years and considering that performance SUVs are hugely popular would make the GLK AMG a prime candidate for the AMG treatment, he replied, “funnily enough it’s not the first candidate… we have enough imagination to fill up that 30 [models] before you know it.”

When questions turned to the higher, proper sports car end of the AMG business, Kallenius confirmed that not only will the brand eventually produce a next-generation flagship to replace the SLS AMG, others are also in the pipeline, such as the smaller, 911-challenging SLC-Class spied here.

“We probably won’t do a ‘Volkswagen Golf 5, 6, 7′ with the SLS because of the unique Gullwing doors and so on and so forth. It’s not something you just do one after the other. “I am not suggesting we should wait 55 years to do the next gullwing car, but certainly not straight after the one we have done now. That needs to sit in automotive history as its own chapter.”

Kallenius stated that “there will be more stand-alone sports cars from Affalterbach”, which all but confirms the long-spied SLC-Class, smaller sibling to the SLS AMG and codenamed C190, will make production.

Designed as a Porsche 911-beater, the SLC-Class will likely use a twin-turbo V8 engine as Mercedes-Benz AMG has confirmed that a V6 engine is not currently being developed, but the existing normally aspirated V8 engine is being phased out. The coupe is expected in 2015, about the same time as the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG is replaced. A roadster version is also likely to follow.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG

Take rate is up to 90 percent in some markets

AMG recently dipped their toes in the all-wheel drive waters and the results have been astounding. As such, AMG CEO Tobias Moers has revealed all-wheel drive will become a key part of their future lineup.

Speaking to Motoring, Moers said “We have certain markets where we have both cars [rear and all-wheel drive E63 AMGs available… and the take rate is more than 90 percent [all-wheel drive]. So we get our answer out of the customers.”

The executive went on to say "There’s not a fear to compromise [the] AMG brand in terms of drive and performance when you use an all-wheel driven car." However, Moers said there is still "room for rear-wheel driven cars" especially track-focused models. Source: Motoring

So in other words at some point the only way to get a RWD AMG is to get a Black Series. They should just offer both AWD and RWD on the upper models. Of course the CLA/A/GLA 45 models have to be AWD.

Overview of New AMG Cars Coming in 2015

Throughout 2015, a plethora of new AMG models will be released by Mercedes-Benz and this is all of them.

First off, this year has been kicked off with the recent launches of the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 AMG Coupe as well as the Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG 4Matic. Both of these models debut at the Detroit Motor Show 2015 and are the first two models in the AMG Sport range from the German firm. They combine suspension and drivetrain tweaks from AMG and sit between regular Mercedes-Benz models and full-blown AMG products.

Also this year, both the recently revealed 2015 Mercedes-AMG C63 and Mercedes-AMG C63 Estate will become available to customers. A third body style of the Mercedes-AMG C63 will also be introduced this year in the form of a new Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe. It is expected to be available in both standard AMG and AMG S specifications and will make use of a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine delivering between 469 hp at 5500 rpm and 503 hp at 5500 rpm with the upcoming Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe.

During 2015, the just unveiled Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 AMG Coupe will also reach customers as well as the Mercedes-AMG S63 Convertible set to launch soon after the ‘regular’ variants of the S-Class Convertible.

Towards the end of 2015, the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class will launch and then in late 2016, the next-generation Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG will reach the market. Elsewhere, the next-generation Mercedes-Benz GLK will launch this year and be renamed the Mercedes-Benz GLC. There’s a possibility that a GLC Coupe variant and a Mercedes-AMG GLC will also launch in the future.

I reckon the new E-class will probably be shown end of this year (Oct/Nov) and be sold in German dealers in March 2016.

Mercedes AMG Working On A Hypercar

GT6-Mercedes-AMG-Concept.webp

Mercedes AMG current flagship product is the AMG GT. But the automotive world is waiting for something which is more extreme from the AMT team. Motor Trend has caught up with the AMG CEO Tobias Moers during the North American International Auto Show to get a hint about the AMG Hypercar. When asked about the Hypercar his reply was “ We want to be seen by the public on the same level as the other sports car maker in Germany.” He also said that “Make race car technology street-legal.”

The AMG hypercar is expected to be powered by 4.0 L Twin Turbo V8 engine producing 700 BHP of power. Mercedes AMG will also add electric motors to increase the combined power output to 1000 BHP. There were rumors that the new Hypercar is mid-engine. But Flywheel believes that the Hypercar will be front engine as most of their supercars till now has a front engine configuration. The electric engine will provide power for each four wheels individually to get four wheel drive system and this will boost the acceleration significantly.

Mercedes AMG formula one team is one of the technically advanced team in F1 currently and this vast knowledge could help them in engineering the much awaited Hypercar. But the AMG team is yet to get a green light from the headquarters and if proceeded then we can expect the AMG Hypercar launch by the end of this decade to taken on the rivals like the Porsche 918, McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari.

This looks like two different articles; the first paragraph and the rest don't compute together. I see no news, just wishful speculation.
