GLE [Spyshots] 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe

The Mercedes-Benz GLE, formerly Mercedes-Benz M-Class (designated with the "ML" nomenclature), is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz since 1997. In terms of size, it is slotted in between the smaller GLC and the larger GLS, the latter with which it shares platforms.

Do you think they are starting to head towards a 'brand identity' design? The CLA and refreshed E-Class do look like they're somewhat brothers.

At this point, I have no idea. They've changed so much recently. I thought the W212 was launching a new identity, with the hockey stick fogs, points-of-light LED's and then Ponton, and very angular design.

Then they suddenly changed everything again, none of the LED's are "iconic" as they've changed so much, the rear's now utilize BMW's "lava lamp" look, etc.

It appears that in 5-10 years the whole lineup will be the "nature inspired" rounder look, at least except for the models that are out right now that have the previous ever-changing languages that won't fit into the future language.

LOL! It's like the designers can't make up their minds on what they want and where they want to go with the brands designs. At least their interior design is the same, right?

Like I said, MB makes some great cars, I wish they had the distinguishing look to back it up.

My sentiments exactly. It annoys me to no end.

Yeah I think the interiors are definitely more tied together actually. You usually know if you're sitting in an M-B as they have much more of a language to them.

Hot Ice, I don't think MB has never had a problem with external design identity. All their cars are instantly identifiable as Mercedes Benz.

The only issue they seem to have had is the move towards angularity and then the rapid move away from it. But I believe this has to do with the Pfeiffer/Wagoner change over. There is a very distinct and clear consistency in all of their designs beginning with the CLS, M-Class, B-class, A-Class, CLA, FL-E etc. More so then there has been for quite a few years. Things seem to be settling down and there is a wonderful coherency returning to the range.

Mercedes make great cars, but nothing in the design shows you it's a Mercedes Benz. There's nothing that distinguishes it as a Mercedes. It's almost like they don't want to put a signature on their cars or the designs.

That is simply nonsense. Certain Mercedes' you could say that about, but others you can't. If you think some rings around headlights are distinguishing "design feature", then surely Mercedes grille is one. The GL wouldn't be mistaken for anything else by anyone with eyesight, neither would the SL, S, CL or the E or C. Now this CLA, A, or B Classes you could say that about, they don't look like a typical Mercedes, but to generalize the whole lineup as not looking like a Mercedes is just plum ridiculous. What else would a CL550 or SL be mistaken for or thought of as?

What he's saying is that Mercedes design has no identity due to lack of harmony and lack of consistent design idiom.

It's simply a fact if one looks at how much the design language has changed since just 2005, as well as not "patenting" any innovative look in particular other than a grille design (which is a given as every manufacturer worth its weight should at least have a distinctive to it grille design).

Make the Grille a point that stands out. Make it the unique thing that it is. Personally, when I buy a car of a Mercedes Caliber, you want it to look special too. Just like when you see an S Class coming down the road, you damn well know it's an S Class coming down the road.

I like MLC better than GLS.

Agreed, and it will likely be called MLC, the M-Class Coupe, and be using the internal code C292. :)

It already does, its known the world over. If you know an S-Class is an S-Class when coming down the road, then they've done the job. IMO it is only the lesser, CLA, A, B cars that don't "look" like a Mercedes.

Yep, because of these early 1993 photos right here. Even though the documentation they came from is dated February 27, 1993, most of these cars were photographed much earlier and if prototypes, built many weeks earlier. It also seems that nomenclature change back then was very last minute as it has 600SEL on it instead of S600. Most of the S-Class updates seem to be designed 2 years ahead of time, unless if very minor(1997-99 W140 designed in '95, rel. in June 1996). The current W221 facelift was already designed by May 24, 2007, so there seems to be a fixed pattern for lead times.

For the W140 facelift? They are from the German Patent Database on DPMA.DE. There are a couple more including patents of the W140, C140 coupe in early January 1990, and a lot of Audi, BMW & MB models years before being unveiled.

What It Might Cost
Style often carries a price--sometimes in more ways than one. In the case of BMW's 2011 X6, the premium is $2,600-$9,300 versus comparable X5 wagons. Would Mercedes follow suit with the MLC versus M-Class? Hard to say this far out, but we wouldn't be surprised, given the wide price gulf that already exists between CLS sedans and their dowdier E-Class relatives. Then again, Mercedes has shown admirable restraint on pricing the latest V6 M-Class models, and we assume will do likewise for the upcoming V8 and hybrid versions. Taking all this into account--and applying Consumer Guide Auto's patent-pending fudge factor--we'd estimate the MLC will start around $50,000 in base V6 trim and run up to $102,000 for the fire-breathing AMG version.
