Fortwo/Forfour 2014 Smart ForTwo prototype shows itself

The Smart Fortwo (stylized as "smart fortwo") is a two-seater city car manufactured and marketed by the Smart division of the Mercedes-Benz Group for model years 1998–2024, across three generations - each using a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and a one-box design. The Smart Forfour (stylized as "smart forfour") is a city car (A-segment) marketed by Smart over two generations. The first generation was marketed in Europe from 2004 to 2006 with a front-engine configuration, sharing its platform with the Mitsubishi Colt.

The forjoy honeycomb might be peeking through the front cameo? :)

The new smart coupe made a brief appearance at the V-Class presentation in Munich.
Few of the about 500 journalists present seem to have noticed it? :)

The new smart 42 coupe will probably celebrate its premiere in July.

Looks like the coupe may be as short as its predecessor (2.69 m).

So the four two and four four are being shown at the same time? Or is there actually a 2 door four 2, 4 door four two and another four four yet to be revealed? I'm a little confused.

Clearly this is make or break for Smart. I hope the engines, transmissions, ride/handling and interior are right this time around otherwise forget it.

True, smart's last chance. :)

Both models may be introduced together in Berlin: the new smart fortwo two seater coupe with the internal code C453, and the new smart forfour with four seats and the internal W453 designation. Suspect initially both will be powered by three cylinder petrol engines, manual transmissions and RWD.

A first test drive looks promising. :)

Smart Fortwo exclusive development drive

After a problem childhood and a spotty adolescence, Smart has grown up.

Bottom line? We arrive back at base and I realise that in the past 10 minutes of our 40 I haven’t thought much about the car’s dynamics. Our talk has turned to manufacturing details, because the car just feels so normal.

I’ve done lots of miles in Smarts, and never before have I lost the overriding perception of its shortness, signified by the perpetualpitching of a rather crashy suspension. For the first time, a two-seat Smart feels like a normal car. Amazingly compact it remains, but it seems to have caught up with the rest.

2015 smart fortwo to Have Record Turning Circle
0baa57465a0ed20a9ae262aa3c2a9d14.webp

Earlier today we gave you the first glimpse of what looked like a digital instrument cluster for the upcoming smart forfour, but now it's time to report some newly-found details about both the smart forfour and the fortwo, one of which is almost unbelievable.

According to the folks at MB Passion, the second generation of the smart forfour will have a surprisingly-short turning circle of 8.65 m (28.4 feet), while the smaller fortwo will have an unbelievable turning circle of just 6.95 m (22.8 feet), which will be a world record for any production car.

To put matters into perspective, the current generation of the fortwo has a kerb-to-kerb turning circle of 8.7 m (28.7 feet), and pretty much no one has ever said anything bad about the car's maneuverability in a crowded city.

Power is to come from a Renault-source three-cylinder engine in both naturally-aspirated and turbocharged variants, which are to be shared by the fortwo and the forfour.

The lowest-powered naturally-aspirated models will purportedly have 61 hp and 71 hp, respectively, while the turbocharged variants will have 88 hp and a combined fuel consumption of a little over four liters per 100 km (58.8 mpg). A Brabus version with 105 hp is set to follow in 2015.

All engines will be paired with a five-speed manual gearbox in standard, while a Getrag-sourced dual-clutch transmission (6DCT150) with six forward speeds should be optional.

On the active safety front, both smarts will get a radar-based Collision Prevention Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and an Automatic Parking System from their Mercedes-Benz bigger brothers, while the center console will feature an infotainment screen not unlike a tablet, which can be also controlled from the multi-function steering wheel.

As some of you already know, both the new smart fortwo and the forfour are set to be unveiled on July 16 in Berlin, while the market launch should take place in September.

2015 Smart ForTwo and ForFour teased

Could debut on July 16
Smart has released a new teaser video for the next generation ForTwo and ForFour, thus hinting at an imminent full reveal.

The teaser clip shows how Smart's recent concepts have influenced the upcoming ForTwo and ForFour which will both be reportedlyintroduced on July 16. The duo will share 70 percent of their components with the all-new Renault Twingo so expect the engine lineup to include a three-cylinder 1.0-liter naturally aspirated unit with 70 PS (51 kW) and 91 Nm (67 lb-ft) as well as a three-cylinder 0.9-liter turbocharged motor rated at 90 PS (66 kW) and 135 Nm (100 lb-ft). There should also be a beefier Brabus variant packing 100 PS (74 kW). An electric variant has already been confirmed but probably won't be offered from day one.

Smart's overhauled ForTwo is said to be 100mm wider (at 1659mm) while retaining the same 2569mm overall length. Bigger changes are planned for the ForFour which will measure 3500mm, thus making it 252mm shorter than its predecessor. Both of them will feature a rear-wheel drive layout and are going to be offered with a 5-speed manual transmission and a dual-clutch 6-speed 'box at an additional cost.

It is believed the cars will be available on order on July 31 and customers will start getting them in September. Other known features include a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, front bumper-mounted turn signals and daytime running lights built into the headlights and likely featuring LEDs. Inside there will be a multi-function three-spoke steering wheel and a tachometer mounted near the A-pillar.
