M3/M4 [Official] BMW M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe

The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986. The BMW M4 is a high-performance version of the BMW 4 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M, that has been built since 2014. As part of the renumbering that splits the coupé and convertible variants of the 3 Series into the 4 Series, the M4 replaced those variants of the BMW M3. Official website: BMW M

So that means there are too many badge whores.

An M4 is better and cheaper than a base 911, so I don't think you have to wonder.

It's cheap compared to a 911. Which is the whole point. Have you ever specced a fully loaded 911? Dear Lord brace yourself!

So by your logic, the C7 Vette is better than both. Its 95% as good as a 991 at half the cost and I guarantee its a hell of a lot better than an M3/M4 on road and track and $10K cheaper base sticker.

I guess it all comes down to how you define "better" as others have suggested in this thread. To me, the M4 is a different animal and not really comparable to a 911. I really like this new M4 but if I was given a choice, it would be a 911 for sure.

A base 911? Nah - I'd much rather a Cayman GTS then if I had to go for a Porsche. M4 fulfills more of an overall requirement for me. It's horses for courses - different people have different value systems.

Same with me Martin I would also rather choose a Cayman S/GTS and then a Boxster S over the 911, I like their looks better and like the fact that they compact and small with the mid engine layout for unrivaled driving experience. Also more affordable and maybe within my price reach one day! I like the M4 cause it's an everyday sports car use as family car and then it can change and also use it for a fun mountain pass blast. The 911 though is still an amazing car!

I too would take the mid engine little Porsche over a base 911, but both over an M4. I think practicality is the strongest argument for the M4 when compered to the Porsche's.

Not to digress, but why not a small block american muscle car then?

Because I want an M4. I don't like big, heavy, ugly muscle cars. (I don't view the Corvette as a muscle car btw - it's become a sharper instrument over the years.)

Now, where's that M4 GC?

O.K. got it Martin. Grunt yes but they have to be cute. No ugly mustangs!!!! And the corvette don't count because it is "sharper" now.

And the M4 is a lightweight.

LOL

And those homely american cars can't do curves klier, you guys are too funny.

C'mon rurella. We're talking holistically here: think magic quadrants. The M3 previously and now the M4 too represent an almost unmatched blend of looks, driveability, precision engineering, desirability, quality and practicality.

You said the M4 has practicality over the base 911. I said it has grunt too over the 911 - it's a fact. I never said that grunt alone was the preeminent decision factor. Here's how I view the M4:
  • It's got a state-of-the-art purpose engineered twin-turbo straight six engine [A USP for me; I regard inline and flat sixes as equally special from a technical standpoint]
  • You can have a manual or, again, state-of-the-art M-DCT which is eclipsed only (in my opinion at least) by PDK II
  • Bespoke engineered suspension, driveline and brakes
  • Precision-engineered CRFP components
  • A terrific quality interior - as long as you haven't just stepped out of a 911 or Cayman
  • Brilliant looks coupled with genuine mom-pop-and-two-kids practicality
  • Both daily and touring usability - and you won't feel short-changed at a track day either
  • Performance
  • Lightweight when judged by its size and against its peers
  • Potentially good fuel economy relative to the performance potential
  • Oh and one last thing: it's German. And German cars are the best cars in the world
There isn't a muscle car out there with the above set of credentials.

I'd absolutely love a 911 but a whole lot more good fortune needs to come my way for it to be a feasible acquisition for me. For one thing, the 911 would have to be a third car and even then I couldn't enjoy it with wife and daughter. The M4 can be used on a daily basis and I can enjoy it with my little family together as a unit.

Compared to a base 911, an M4 is much more sporty.
You take the M4 to the track, and the 911 to the office.

BTW, I love the 911, don't get me wrong!!! Even for me it would be really hard between a Carrera S and M4. That should say enough.

And those homely american cars can't do curves klier, you guys are too funny.

No, American cars suck extremely hard. Sorry. I love America, but not it's cars.

I wouldn't say it is. I think a base 911 is sportier than an M4. On road and on track. It's a 911 after all and this cannot be disregarded. In my opinion it's still the single best sports car range in the world.

I see the M3/M4 as a more all-round proposition and being an all-rounder naturally implies compromise in one or more areas.

I think a base 911 is sporty, don't get me wrong. I just think an M4 is more sporty. It's the no 1 priority of an M4. A 911 is more of a smooth operator.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
