CLA [Official] Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupé (C117)

The Mercedes-Benz CLA is a series of luxury subcompact executive cars manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 2013. The first generation was a four-door sedan based on the platform of the W176 A-Class and W246 B-Class compact cars, marketed as a four-door coupé. In 2015, Mercedes-Benz expanded the CLA family to include a station wagon configuration which it markets as a Shooting Brake. As the V177 A-Class sedan took its place as the budget-conscious sedan, the second generation got longer and wider than the W205 C-Class.
The car is too small for this kind of side profile and side line is too busy. Headlamps are too big. They make the car looks cartoon-ish.

Compare with C-Class:

Awful FWD proportions from the profile completely out of place in a coupe like sport stylized car. Cheap looking interior especially the nav screen.

A3 sedan will kill this car. (A3 sedan concept has the best FWD sedan proportions on the market, this on the other hand has to be far and away the worst.

Also a lot of C class sedan sales will be cannibalised by this car (if anyone will buy this car it will be Mercedes customer who is replacing his C lass sedan), it will cost the same and it is the same size ac the C. The only difference is the FWD rather than RWD.

This (use of FWD platform on CLA) is also a marking disaster in making. CLA compared to the C class is more aggressive looking (and is marketed as a sports car) therefore if one of these cars should get the RWD platform it is the CLA and not the C class.

Everything is on its head with this car. Mercedes will regret it.

Oh my eyes. Do I see a HEAVILY wedge shaped greenhouse with a counteractive exaggeratedly reverse wedge character line that disappears into an unconnected abyss of nowhere? At this point they must be joking around.

IMO they're trying way too hard to go too modern and "alien" with this interior. Looks very cold, uninviting, unpleasant to "live in", and kind of cheap/uneventful.

This car is really appalling... and surprisingly the non-sport (red car I assume) is better looking (relatively) than the Sport model. What happened to the Concept Style Coupe influences? But I always like to hold final judgement until I see a car in person as sometimes pictures cannot capture the total essence of a design.

These compact executive class models always look ill-proportioned in pictures due to their short length relatively to their height. But I suspect, as in most cases, they do look much better in the flesh.

CLA 180 / 28.976,50 Euro
CLA 180 BlueEFFICIENCY Editon / 28.976,50 Euro
CLA 200 / 31.862,25 Euro
CLA 250 / 38.675,00 Euro
CLA 220 CDI / 37.990,75 Euro

Interior looks good in that shot. If they just would have concentrated on making the design look good as a small car and not try to scale down a CLS they would have nailed it. The front end and sides are just not right, but it isn't a ugly car still. The FWD proportions are seemingly impossible to get around. If priced around 30K in the U.S. and like 37-39K tops with all options this thing well sell. Question is how many C-Class buyers will it take. 2014 is going to be a tough year for the C-Class as dealers wait for the all new model as a 2015 model. Now bring on the CLA45 AMG please.

The FWD proportions is not so bad to my eyes. Please remember that its a compact executive segment model and it will look a little tall in profile view.

I think the C Class is going to have a tough year regardless of the debut of the CLA. The next C Class will debut in 2014 and I think Mercedes is doing the right thing in coming out with the one-two punch to hit BMW where it hurts (i.e. hit the 3-series hard!). The BMW 3-series now has to do battle with the CLA Coupe and then the next C Class next year. It's going to be tough 24 months ahead for the 3-series. The really interesting thing to keep an eye on is the sales figure of the BMW 4-series. the CLA is going to be a great success if it takes sales away from the 4-series.

I can't see that happening, the 4-Series is upmarket from this and RWD with the option of a I6. This CLA will be pitched more to first time Mercedes buyers. The CLA will be competing with the 1/2 Series BMWs, not the 4-Series. It isn't even close IMO. The 4er kills the CLA in looks and almost assuredly in the driving experience. If BMW could turn the ugly 1er into a looker they will have a big hit on their hands here in the U.S. where the 3 Series still reigns supreme at BMW.

The A is pitched to the first Merc buyers, not the CLA. The CLA is the sportier and more luxurious version of the A Class just like the E and the CLS. The CLA is definitely above the 1 and 2-series.

The 4-series is a better looking car being a traditional 2-door coupe. But I wonder if more people prefer having 4-doors these days. The B-pillar is a bitch to get around to get to the rear seats.

Maybe I should have been more specific, in the U.S. The CLA is the entry level product, there is no A-Class here. CLA is at the same level as the 1/2 Series BMWs. All of them are entry level, and the CLA is going to be the new entry level for the MB brand as the next C-Class moves upmarket a bit.
