I think the stars of the tournament should be the refs. It's a real shame, most of their performances. I don't know if they're bottling under pressure, or the FIFA just changed their rules to make this more like a ladies game.

Sadly I have to agree, playing on home soil African teams have been bitterly disappointing! I'm in the office sleepy, hungover & missed breakfast just because I had to drown my sorrows over Ivory Coast & got home what seems like 10 minutes before my alarm went off.

Oh well, with that out of the way, I can't wait for round of 16 where every team has everything to lose from now on!

So true. I still can't get my head around the 1 second pause that players have before they decide to drop to the ground in agony.

Huge contrast to rugby. I wonder if anyone knows the story of Buck Shelford, one of NZ's famous All Blacks? Now there's a real man. Back in the 80's there was a very aggressive match against the French. He got a boot to the groin and a massive knock to the head, which knocked out four teeth. The boot to the groin tore open his scrotum and left one of his testicles hanging out. What did he do? He subbed off, asked the physio to stitch it back up and went back out to play the rest of the game. With concusion, patched up scrotum and four missing teeth. That's a real man right there.

The 'acting' in soccer/football is just an embarrassment for the sport. I know it's common-place and just a part of the game now, but you just want to laugh at all these 'athletes'.

Following on from Gene's example, here's an incident that occured during one of the games of the NRL 2003 State of Origin (Rugby League in Australia). Player Michael DeVere suffered a cut above his right eyebrow. He walked over to the sidelines where the team medical staff tried to stop the bleeding, but to no avail. The solution to stop the bleeding..? Using staples to close the wound. All this done on the sidelines as the game continued.

Well, everyone in the world knows about how big sissies and cry baby the italian players are. That's why I hate their team.

Had to come in here to share the excitement, especially when the people around me are so uneventful. I'm the only one watching the world cup, and I haven't missed a game-except France v. Mexico, mais et alors mouvais?

My take so far:

Germany v. Serbia: Wow. I haven't screamed so much at a football game since God knows when. That was amazing. Go Serbia

All USA games thus far: Besides the annoying American commentators with their bias coming into play, these games have been so... entertaining. USA sure does knows how to put the melo in dramatic. They're trying...

I was sure they'd lose to Slovenia; I'm thankful I didn't hit delete after two-nil.

Brasiliera: Will always have a place in my heart. I love watching them play, they make music on the field with their footwork and goals.

Espana: Everyone falls sometime. You get back up, and keep going.

France: quoi?

I'm disappointed with every African nation in the cup. I don't and cannot understand why they cannot beat their counterparts; the other teams are not necessarily better, but must it only be South America that is a tangible contender at all times?

And speaking of Africa, I am a fan of those vuvuzuela horns. Every nation has their hooligans. This time it comes in the form of a long narrow music instrument that makes you run for your bee suit.

Ironically, the same horns were then blown into the faces of the defeated SA fans when they lost their match...

Those horns can stay.

With every World Cup I have my favorite teams (usually 6) and favorite players (2-3) that I follow closely until the end.

So far my 2 players haven't performed, and the teams are all over the place.

LOL@ that "I hate him" comment. Yeah he got lucky, but he was late to the party...hopefully it inspires him to exceed his potential and be a real asset to Portugal.
