X5 M / X6 M [Official] BMW X5 M Thread

The X5 M is the high-performance variant of the X5. In April 2009, the X6 M version was announced, with a 408 kW (547 hp) version of the BMW S63 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. The BMW X5 M and X6 M are the first vehicles from BMW M GmbH to have xDrive all-wheel-drive system and automatic transmissions, and are also crossovers as opposed to passenger cars.
^Yeah, what's the ML63 and turbo numbers? while u at it:D

A C63 will still be faster from zero all the way to 200km,i expected that car to be a little bit faster than C63/M3.

Not with a heavy weighter like that. Also a SUV has shape like a tank. CW is awful on a SUV. Put this engine in a M3 and the acceleration would be a lot quicker.

I dont know the acceleration for ML63 but lets wait for future tests, head to head comparisons. I don't trust so much in "official numbers".

^they dont reduce prices with age tarek;)

Lol that's not what i meant:D

What i meant is X5/6 M are just brand new cars using the latest material and a brand new engine is under the hood so maybe that's the reason..or it's just a mistake from BMW's side..:D

Cayenne and Q7 indeed are crazy expensive. I expected the Benz to be (around 1500 euros) more expensive than the X5 M too btw

The photography was hurried because of the about turn to debut the car in New York , originally it was destined for Shanghai on the bout that China is a key progressive market for this car and it's brother.
with the advent of BMW's decision to abandon the Tokyo motor show our launch cycle is now rearranged with each BMW subsidiary responsible for their own Events marketing , BMW NA will host the X6M debut , so everything has been rushed through in which it is highly in evidence.

So there we have it and as expected there are both negatives and positives from enthusiasts. And also some fear aswell regarding the next M5 which is far from approved but continuing in the development process as all concentration is currently on the regular 5er getting to production first. There is still a lot of difference between the M5 and the X-M models which you will see, so there is no need to fear that by looking at this car (even if you despise the concept) that this is the direction of the next M5.

Go figure.

A real reason to go to the NY Show this year after all. Something to see that needs to be seen.

I can't call it until I lay eyes on it.

I haven't read through the thread yet so just my two cents -

The X5 M looks really stupid - if we didn't know that it was a OEM product I think most of us would be jeering at it like it was a half-baked AC Schnitzer job. I think part of the problem is that our eyes tell us that the rims need to be 1" larger to properly fill-out those huge wheel wells.

And speaking of the rims... BMW have regressed so far from the days of Bangle excess that they're just pressing the snooze bar when it comes to design. These rims are dull and anonymous to the point of simple interchangeability with any other BMW.

One final thought - In this period of severe economic turmoil, the wretched excess that is the premium performance SUV is an anachronism. The lack of a M-tuned SUV seemed like a gap in BMW's lineup 6 years ago, but nowadays could be seen as a virtue.

^ I'm glad all this is coming from you Osna, I agree with most of your assessment. We have to be objective once in a while and take an unbiased look.:usa7uh:

So much negativity about the direction and so forth.
Unfortunately when we abandoned the decision to make the M3 CSL ,The M brand would have been redundant until late 2011 and the appearence of the next M5. The only thing going for it as a progression over the current M3 was just a boost in power , the original conceptive point for the M3 CSL was not working out well in tests - It was something that could not be rushed in which now the application of a Road going KERS programme is showing some promising results through it's development.
Although the X5 and X6 have an engine that will be "unique" to these vehicles only. An M5 is still in development far from greenlit because the engineers are working hard on two engine concepts that the Board of directors have approved for further development .

As an lifestyle man and someone who effectively has a family and a needs a lot of utility for everything I am more inclined to the X5-M unfortunately the X6-M is far from my requirements.

But the X5-M is not going to be the final phase of the Performance X5 range , next year BMW will launch an upgraded version of it's award winning six cylinder turbocharged diesel - Performance and efficiency will be the interesting aspects of this model - It will receive a similiar but less brutal aero kit , (which is testing currently) two protruding exhaust ports and PS output will be under 400PS but eliminates the option of a V8 diesel . After launch in the Upper model X family - X5 and X6 it will eventually find it's way into the 5er,6er and 7er models including the ongoing working proposal 6er GT.

BMW see such a performance diesel appropriate to accomodate alongside the M models for European sales whilst the rest of the market accomodate the X-M models.

When is the X5 getting Twin Turbo V8 4.4 engine?

This means a tri-turbo inline 6 diesel engine, I bet the next m5 alos will have a tri-turbo! with KERS.

I put my money on a V8 M5, this words are simply marketing strategy, creating expectation about a future product, debate helps expectation, expectation sells products before its launch.

M CEO said on that interview a month ago about the future M3 and 1er M variant that the engine on the X5 M and X6 M will be found on other M cars, so as it´s said in Spain: "White and in a bottle... Milk".;)

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
