I have to say that I've heard it in real life 2 years ago!
There is no word to describe, except: The Vorsprung - Soundtrack

Re: How Audi's DSG gearbox works.

I still can't make out the difference between DSG and SMG :t-hands:

I could go into more details...but I'm at work right now. I know many other members here can help you out. But I'll give you the main difference.

DSG is dual-clutch
SMG is single-clutch

obviously there are more differences but that is the main one.

Thanks! I didn’t know the SMG was single clutch! So…which one is better ? I guess that is up for debate ;)

Re: How Audi's DSG gearbox works.

Just a couple of problems with this.
It ain't Audi's gearbox, and it's not product of the 1980's.

I haven't watched the video...so I only replied to google's question about the differences between them...just in case you directed it at me...and any case I don't think DSG was made in the 80s either.

Your welcome. Just trying to help and as for which one is better...you're right it's debatable but after a while I've begun leaning towards DSG.

Re: How Audi's DSG gearbox works.

First of all Audi now calls the DSG "S-Tronic" , second dual clutch gearbox as an idea goes way back but Audi reintroduced it during the '80s. Third and most important dual clutch gearboxes are superior to single clutch ones or else BMW and Porsche wouldn't be working on their versions right now.;)

Re: How Audi's DSG gearbox works.

Well actually Porsche in the 80s used it before and gave it to Audi.
It was known as the PDK = Porsche Doppler-Kupplungs.
Dual clutches are actually about ~70 old. It is the invention of french engineer
Adolphe Kégresse, and it was build for the Citroen Traction Avant. However it never made into it.
There were some Citroen 11 CV who showcased this twin-clutch at the 1947 is Saloon du Paris.
However it becamed viable for competion in the 1980s, and was used by the Porsche 956/962 endurance racers and the Audi Quattro S1 rally car.
And now Audi's great merit, putting the DSG/Dual Tronic into production cars, finaly.

Re: How Audi's DSG gearbox works.

Damn...thats some history lesson there Imhotep...and I freakin love history. Great info there guys...but lets not start another DSG vs. SMG thread...cuz you all know that AMG automatic owns j/k...LOL:D

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
