Spied: 2009 Audi A4 Allroad

An interesting Audi A4 prototype has turned up in Germany, showing all the signs of a new addition to Audi's Allroad lineup. This 2008 A4 is fitted with matte-black wheel arches and an increased ride-height, both of which are key components of Audi's Allroad concept.

Despite this prototype's sedan origins, the A4 Allroad will remain a wagon-only offering. Since the new A4 wagon has not yet been revealed, it appears Audi engineers decided to take a covert approach to testing by using this sedan. After the new A4 wagon makes its public debut, we expect to see A4 Allroad prototypes using the appropriate wagon body style.

The wheel arch extensions appear to be integrated into the surrounding design elements, showing an intentional flow from the front and rear bumpers into the newly applied flares. Similarly, a new side sill completes the design to give this test car quite a finished look.

Since its inception, the Audi Allroad has only existed as a spin-off to the A6 wagon. From the looks of this new prototype, it appears that an A4-based Allroad will join the lineup.

The wheel-archs gives it a bit of character; not sure about the integration with the bumpers though. There surely will be more black parts like the A6, don't know how it will look like.
The C6 A6 Allroad looks better than the non-Allroad imo.

^^
Yeah the A6 allroad looks amazing, especially with the bumpers painted. I love it. I never thought that Audi had plans for an A4. Hmmm...not sure what I think of it.

Funny...I like the A6 Allroad more when the bumpers are not painted. The car seems longer and with a lower body, gives it a sporty look and a lot of character!

Gosh, Audi has gone way over the limit with those front lights design....

Re: Works for me

My daily driver needs to be tough as nails. Potholes, deep snow, dirt roads... It has to do it all. If they build an A4 Estate All Road I will buy one. And, if they include skid plates as an option, better yet.

Once upon a time Audi's were the premier rally cars. Time to put a bit of Rally back in the brand.

The Q5 will come in US by the end of 2008. Maybe that will suit your needs.:usa7uh:

Re: Works for me

I just don't see the point of these Allroad versions anymore. Utterly pointless vehicles when Audi has or is going to have so many better looking suvs on the market.

Agreed! Especially here in Audi's case when they will unveil Q5... I could understand A6 Allroad, but A4...:t-hands:

:t-cheers:

Allroad cars are attractive for people living on the country side driving on gravel roads every day and need a car with high ground clearance.

The A6 allroad and Volvo XC70 are much more sensible options than the bulky, expensive and gas guzzling SUVs.

Re: Works for me

A large, A6-Avant Allroad makes sense. But this A4 sedan allroad doesn't make any sense at all.

Even though I think the A6 allroad is a good car I have to agree that the A4 allroad is a bit fishy.

I still don't see the point. Most AWD cars have a higher ground clearance anyway and if the roads are that bad you need an SUV which will have a sturdier chassis anyway. These Allroads are nothing more than pretenders when it come to being something suitable for offroad not to mention very ugly IMO. An Audi shrouded in black plastic and all jacked up off the ground is just ridiculous and so uncouth considering how elegant their cars are to begin with. People who live and/or have to drive in country conditions buy trucks, not he-man looking wagons which is which this Allroad concept has been a flop here in the U.S.

Like which ones? All MB, Audi and BMW's AWD models(non SUV) have standard ground clearance.

Sure you might argue that one should go all the way and buy an SUV but for some, an A6 allroad serve their needs just fine. An SUV is more expensive to buy and to own.

Some people aren't going to drive on sand dunes or through alligator swamps and just need an ordinary car which can take some dirt.

If you ask me, I would never buy an allroad. Too expensive and only cost 400 euro less than a Q7.

BTW Isn't air suspension standard in the A6 Avant? How high is the ground clearance with the highest setting?

Re: Works for me

The reason A6 allroad wasn't (isn't) very successful was partly because Audi demands too high a premium over the standard A6 car. If it were around 10-15% higher, it would be a much better seller, IMHO. The other reason is that in the US customers don't really like wagons because it carries with it the image of "soccer mom" car, hence they tend to choose the "more masculine" option in SUVs even when a regular Avant would do.
Incidentally, I like the idea of an A4 allroad if they price it reasonably. Why? it's sure to handle better than the Q5 (for example, a6 allroad is only about 50-60 kg heavier than a6 avant and with an equivalent engine is only on average 0.2 slower to 100 km/h) and I usually prefer a car shape than and suv shape. In fact, when the bumpers are in the same color, I think the current A6 allroad looks better than the regular A6 avant (admittedly, with its air suspension set to the lowest ground clearance).

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
