The current 997 Porsche 911 is still being updated for its mid-cycle refresh, with only the standard Carrera and Carrera 4, plus their performance ‘S’ variants, receiving the update. Still in the works is the new Turbo and the GT3 models and these aren’t expected to be revealed for several months at least. Now, a test mule has been spotted in Germany by our spy photographers, which suggests that Porsche engineers may have already begun testing the next-generation 998 model.

Telltale signs that a new platform is residing under the familiar 997 sheet metal are the extended wheel arches, revealing a wider track is set to appear on the new model. This means the new car should be slightly bigger than the current model, while handling and dynamics should also see an improvement. The roll-cage fitted on this test car is another indication that the 998 platform is still in the early stages.
It’s still too early to determine what changes Porsche has in store for the engine lineup, but expect to see the familiar flat-six engine range carry over with only minimal updates – possibly for emissions and economy standards. The new PDK dual-clutch gearbox will also carry over as will a standard six-speed manual.
Given Porsche’s trend of updating its cars roughly every three to four years, the new 998 will likely appear towards the end of 2010 at the earliest.

What if it's just a sport version of the 997 Carrera S? Maybe a more powerful Kit-version? :t-hands:

Nope. It's th 998 due late 2011 and this is pretty much the maiden test of the under pinnings.

I'm very curious about the new engines or if Porsche will just bump up the displacement of the current DFI ones.

re: 998 Porsche 911 (Spy pics & info)

Wow, Porsche doesn't play around. I'm still waiting on them to approve a facelifted 911 Turbo Cabriolet for their "give it away" program.

Damn! If they are testing this early the 998 is going to be one hell of a car.

I couldn't be another souped-up version of the current 997. There is already a GT3, GT3 RS, GT2..........................

I wonder what this could be? It doesn't have any wings'n'things on it but it has wider track. The standard looking S-tailpipes tells me that the engine is most probably unmodified.

Maybe Porsche is just testing a new front axle.

Updated with new details

Still in the works is the new Turbo and the GT3 models, though they too are drawing near to their expected unveiling. Recently a test mule was spotted in Germany by our spy photographers, suggesting that Porsche engineers may have already begun testing the next-generation 998 model, and now Porsche’s chief of research and development, Wolfgang Dürheimer, has revealed some details of what to expect from the next-gen 911.

re: 998 Porsche 911 (Spy pics & info)

finally, the side mirrors will likely be deleted since they can be replaced with cameras and screens for improved aerodynamic efficiency.

Gulp!

Sounds very advanced, and expensive as well. Not sure that's going to happen yet, I mean where in the cabin would the screens be located??

re: 998 Porsche 911 (Spy pics & info)

"First, pedestrian protection rules in the EU will require a change to the nose section of the car, likely meaning a larger and more collapsible bumper section."

This is going to completely ruin the front end design of the car. I want to thank to EU politicians for altering the design of the 911 with stupid legislation:t-banghea:t-banghea:t-banghea:t-banghea

Screw pedestrians, if they can't keep on the sidewalk, let them pay for it...

I'd be a happy Pedestrian if the car that hit me were a 911. I could tell all my friends!... from the hospital bed that is... hehehe

re: 998 Porsche 911 (Spy pics & info)

Bloody hell, the pedestrian laws are killing car design!!! Just look how freaking upright the front end is, utterly terrible. Certainly hope the final product doesn't have to be that upright. Good to see that development is steaming on. I see the rear end is covered up in the same manner as the Panamera. Pop-up expandable wing is pretty expected as it will be featured on every upcoming Porsche. The 997 GT3 is a work of art so I can't even dream of what I would want the next generation to be.

The test mule looks quite long though which makes me believe that Porsche are bumping up the cylinders to 8 as the flat 6 seem to has reached it's limit. I'm very curious about the so called "engine of the future" that TechArt got their hands on last year from a guy that stole a couple of them from the Porsche R&D center.

The test mule reminds me of the 959. The back of the car harks back to the 935 Le Mans racers of the early 1980's.

I doubt Porsche will put a flat-8 engine into the 998 given the need to reduce emissions and fuel economy. I think one of the Porsche engineers did say on the record at the launch of the facelift 997 that the 998 will continue to use the an improved version of the new DFI flat-6 engine and drivetrain (PDK and new 4WD system). But a little flat-8 engine would be an absolute gem!

Yes, the overzealous EU pedestrian safety laws have made cars uglier no doubt. But I thought mid and rear engined Porsches might be less affected because there is no need to artificially create additional "space" between the bonnet and the top of the engine to lessen the impact between the car and the pedestrian as you would in a front engined car. We shall see how the Porsche designers and engineers deal with this problem.

True the less cylinders the better but in the end Porsche is a sports car manufacturer and won't slow down, likewise Lamborghini or Ferrari. A flat 8 is quite a drastic move but with the 997 facelift Porsche has squuezed out the last juice out of the flat-6. The only options are to bump up the displacement or increase the number of cylinders. You can go flat-8 and still be environmental friendly by designing a system that can shut of 2 cynlinders. Either way I'm not seeing that coming. Porsche will most likely retain the current engine modify it and focus on keeping the weight on the car down.

There is another way to squeeze out more power from the flat 6. Those cam-less engines are not far away from production, so there is a possibility that the 998 will use such a device.
