When are we finally going to see the big fat M5-only grille, Scott?
And M5 side gills AND those turn indicator looks hella ugly. The turn indicator on the side has to go asap.

I'm not exactly jumping to conclusions here, you CAN see with your own eyes that one wheel is spinning (the smoke from one side might be the clue). Also the very fact it's spinning excessively is also proof that in this video this particular car is struggling to get the power to the road.

The RS5 debate was debating whether it had dropped enough revs to be classed as 'bogging down', I didn't disagree that it wasn't a bad launch and nor am I saying that BMW won't get these traction issues under control.

Again I find it comical that all you guys jump at my negative comments yet ignore everyone else's and also never remark when I post something positive. One could almost question who is the fanboy in this discussion.

Considering how far away it is I would reckon he is looking input from the group as to whether this PS is appealing.

(PS. I was just about to buy an E46 320i, but the dealer was awfull against me, and I had the money for the car with me. 35.000€ in my suitcase, and they sent me to the Volvo dealer, just across the street. Much more friendly than your dealer. But that's not the topic. So anyway.)

So, back to this photo. In my opinion it looks like the regular 5er with the X5/6M bumper, which while it's nice, it's too shouty for my taste. The car screams raw power, but it is not in line with the whole desing of the car, which is rather on the safe side. A more conservative M bumpers pack would be much better when added to the rather understated, toned down 5er (compared with the E60 of course).

OK, I'll give my two pence worth to this Blue M5 PS.

It's nice but like everyone else has said the side ducts are way too big for the elegant design that is the F10. Also I hope they don't do anything too pronounced on the bonnet, a huge bulge would be awful. But I have faith that BMW will judge things right for this car if past history is anything to go by.

As for the debate between mechanical and electronic, well I think the world of possibilities that will come by using the latter would make a world of difference in the M5, especially now that not only the power is boosted but the torque hugely so.

But then what do I know.

As to the diff used, we've seen several spy videos of the M5 already and this was the first one with the inner rear tire spinning. IMO, there are several possible explanations to this:

1) BMW's testing different rear diffs (and this run was done with an usual, open diff).

2) BMW's testing different settings of the same diff (read DPC).

3) This particular run was driven very hard, harder than every other run caught on video before (i.e. they're using an regular, open diff).

4) It's not the diff to blame for the spinning tire, but a e-boost system mounted at the rear axle (after the diff).

It's everybody's guess which of these possible explanations is actually the reason for this, I tend to go with No. 2). If the rumors of the M5 getting DPC are true, this result makes perfectly sense. DPC only acts like a real LSD if the software tells it to.

Is it possible that the F10 M5 comes with a fake (electronic) LSD instead of a good old school mechanical one?

I may be wrong, but I don't think so. The diff will be mechanical, the question is if it will be purely mechanical (like the current M3 and M5 models) or electronically controlled (DPC, like the X5M and X6M).

Pardon my ignorance, but the DPC is an electronically controlled mechanical limited slip differential, right?

So, this is supposed to be "better" than a pure mechanical LSD?

Sorry for the offtopic but had to just mention that our nearest dealer tried to add 20 000€ of equipment to my neighbors X6M price tag though the equipment wasn't even in the car, when my neighbor mentioned it to them they didn't even give him an apology. Same thing happened when we went to fix our 530da 'cause the engine kept turning off. At the dealer they said that all six pistons and exhaustvalves had to be replaced, that would cost appr. 3000€, for the study only they charged 100€, later that day we went to some small diesel workshop where they said that they had to replace just two pistons. The pieces and the work cost 500€.

And back to the topic, I actually like that front bumper in the M5, and that colour is just

Yes and yes (IMO). To be specifc, it's a torque vectoring diff which doesn't brake the inner rear wheel, but accelerates the outer rear wheel. It can also do what a mechanical diff can do. Besides, it's of benefit to have the LSD behaviour only when wanted. A purely mechanical LSD can cause quite a busy rear axle in unexpected situations, which might be surprising to some drivers/owners.

Exactly south, the benefits of such a setup far exceeds that of the M-diff (great though it is). The main advantages are it's ability to work more closely with the DSC systems and allow for a more controlled use of the the immense power that this engine will undoubtedly product, blending to the point were one might truly question whether it's all these aids should be able to fully be turned off such is it's effectiveness. In fact I wouldn't at all be surprised if the M5 adopted a fully vectoring system similar to the one used on the GTR, RS5 and 997tt.

My reckoning is a tour de force of technologies in this car.

P.S.
Not so sure that we are seeing the KERS system in this video. Unless that system is powering the front axle as with the GT3 Hybrid I still question the logic of such a setup on the rear axle in what is effectively a luxury/sports saloon designed almost exclusively for fat middle aged bankers with little true driving skill.

This is my random OT contribution to this thread. I find it both comforting and disconcerting to know that so much of these new cars from all the makers are becoming electronically/software controlled. In 5-10 years time, the concept of your home mechanic will be extinct (if it isn't already), and you'll need to take your car to a software engineer to get the car fixed. I remember reading somewhere that the BMW engineers are making huge leaps and bounds in their cars between firmware versions, not because the car is changing mechanically, but because their still learning a lot about the software. There'll come a day when the software is so accessible, that someone will hack the firmware, modify, improve and/or customize it, and you can download the firmware and flash it to your car from the comfort of your living room... much like people do with Android and WinMo devices once you've rooted them.

I find it comforting because I have a degree in software engineering, and I'm working at the heart of the IT industry (infrastructure).

I think your comments are very true and probably strike a cord with the concerns inside the non dealer garages industry. What this is really done has taken the DIY mechanic in all of us out of the equation.
