M5 BMW M5 F10 (spy pics & info)

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports saloon category. The first M5 model was hand-built beginning in late 1984 on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1 that made it the fastest production saloon at the time. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M

Next-generation M5 will get a twin-turbo V10 and KERS from BMW's Formula One cars!

IT’S M for Monstrous! With a 507bhp 5.0-litre V10, the BMW M5 hardly lacks punch – but Auto Express has learned that the wick is really being turned up on the next-generation model.

Following in the wheeltracks of the Audi RS6, the next M5 is rumoured to boast a new twin-turbocharged V10 engine. The new unit is expected to be a development of the firm’s 564bhp 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 which will power the upcoming X5 M and X6 M models.

It will produce in excess of 600bhp and is likely to be paired to an F1-style KERS system, allowing the driver to boost performance at the touch of a button. However, the new M5 is expected to keep an eye on fuel economy too with a new system that shuts down cylinders when they are not needed. We’ll learn more about the new M5 and the 5-Series next year.

çBut this is not comfirmed right?. I won´t take it as true unless EnI or Scott tell us.

Nope :) Complete speculation, taken straight from the GCF forums.
BMW is supposedly testing two engines, the V8 TT and V10 TT. No decision has been made yet, but we will surely be the first ones to know if they do! Way before Auto Express at least :D

Didn't expect AutoExpress to take the news from us and GCF without a single quote
New information on the next F10 BMW M5
anyway....

But the picture you posted with the story is the E60 M5 with an F10 550i V8 TT in front of it, not the new M5 :) They are benchmarking the next 550i against the E60 M5. F10 M5 is initially being tested/going to be tested with E60 body shell around it .

Yes, it is speculations as we have not seen it yet :D

Well, regarding twin turbo, if this V10 happens to become a reality, it should sport the "new" TwinPower turbo technology. So, in a sense, a quad turbo V10.

Sounds like they just sensationalised what SCOTT27 stated just a few days ago about the F10 M5. I guess they 'conveniently' left out the part where BMW's still contemplating between 2 engines and hasn't made a decision on either yet.

exactly. We helped spread the story, but it got twisted around

I find having KERS in the next M5 laughable since BMW can't even get it right in their F1 car.

Oh, they get it right alright, problem is, every car is better without it :D It is, so to say, contra productive from both the sporty and efficiency perspectives...

If next M5 is getting KERS. then Im pretty sure KERS isnt getting activated with a push of a button. Traffic safety, hello, the driver need to focus on driving, not a button when you want to pass a car. I believe the system will be activated automaticaly with a push on the gas pedal.

You mean like having a button for 100 more hp? :D No, I get what you mean, the extra energy will surely be used instead of the generator, making the engine work freely.

Nice, this machine got big shoes to fill! However, I'll badly miss the phenomenal high-revving V10! :cry2:

pardon my ignorance as I am not up to date with F1, but what kind of problems is the F1 team facing with KERS? Why is the technology not working for them?

Quote:
Mario Theissen (BMW Motorsport Director and team principal of BMW Sauber) ...
"There has been success in the transfer of KERS technology (to BMW's road car division)," he said. "Our engineers are supporting the research and development in Munich and that will continue for some time. What has been learned can be used not only for hybrid cars, but also for electric and conventional cars," said Theissen.

KERS (For performance cars) is the next big thing especially in light of future emissions regulations.
Engineers say the prototype set-up is working well with the F10 chassis.
Although at M division it helps if the base car is something really , really special.

Like most new technology, it is having teething troubles. Also KERS in F1 is limited by rules which restrict it to a maximum of 80HP for 6 secs/lap or something like that. Also weight and COG is of paramount importancer in F1 and KERS obviosly adds weight to the car in undesired places. In road going applications free of all those constraints, it is has great potential.

Of course in this forum, like most other stuff under the sun, people manage to even turn this promising piece of tech into fan boy war. If it was some stupid thing like automatic wipers or brakes, I bet you would have the half of the bling boys here swooning over how it is next best thing since rubber tires .

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
