4 Series World Premiere - BMW Concept 4

The BMW 4 Series is a range of compact executive cars manufactured by BMW since 2013. The 4 Series was created when BMW spun off the 2-door models (coupé and convertible) of the 3 Series into a separate series.
I must say I’m pretty surprised I was expecting more backlash from this forum so far the reception isn't as bad as I thought or maybe it’s because most of the negative members are on my ignore list? I’m glad BMW have the balls to go bold, I’d love to hear what Chris Bangle thinks about this in the future.

The days have arrived when BMWs are starting to look like Korean Audi knock offs...aka Hyundai/Kia

Makes sense considering that Kia has stolen two BMW employees already...

Strongly disagree; the F32 design is awkward at best with its exaggerated canopy and weird hood shutline. The only possibly redeeming factor on that model line was theF34 grab coupe. The side profile of this car is achingly beautiful and is a worthy successor to the gorgeous E46/92 lineage... even with that grille

F34 is the 3er GT. You meant F36.

The current 4er Coupe is still a benchmark in the looks department. Compared to mostly anything in its segment right now. And it is specifically harmonious and elegant in dark colours. The Concept 4 is a change of paradigm. It will take time to digest. It is as dramatic and controversial as the E63 6 Series Coupe and not as straight-forward and broadly appealing as the F32.

But... I like it very, very, very much!

The influence is there.

Does it matter whether it was the F34/36?

Also thanks for echoing my point... any car that only looks good in darker colors is a failure as a design...

That's the kidney they should have used… Besides the grille, the car looks absolutely gorgeous. But we can already tell (after seeing the spyshots) that the bootlid won't have that sharp design and the grille will be much smaller (thank god). I think we will see a transition like with the Z4 concept to the Z4 production car...

I remember having had a discussion with Dukec on that nose back in 2017 or so. He just loves the boldness of it, I think it might be a good differentiator, for the upcoming i models, for instance. So, for me, this would be a logical approach: Elephant kidneys on the luxury models, beaver teeth on the electric models, slender kidneys on the rest.
But why putting such huge bling on a mid level sports tourer. It just does not make sense to me. The c pillar also doesn’t work for me. Gives me A5 vibes. Again: why?
The 3er/4er formula worked well imo (in contrast to some other cars in their line up). So why start the revolution with this one?

I also catch a bit of an A5 coupe vibe. But BMWs' 4 Coupe concept certainly upstages it in terms of the proportions of the architecture. The sideglass graphic sans the traditional Hofmeister Kink is unusual for a BMW but I do not find it untasteful in this particular application. Headlamps and taillamps are ace. As is the flank sculpturing, as are the arch-filling, flush fitting wheels.

Should the grill be significantly toned-down and most of the rest be maintained on the actual production model, this could be be one looker of a car. The production 8er continues to disappoint my eyes. I hope that the new 4 will be able to win me over.

Bold BMW is back.

Debatable.

What some may call "bold" may simply be "The New Ugly" for others. And it all pertains exclusively to the cars' grill. Whatever.

With the exception of that controversial grill, the 4 Concept coupe is a solid piece of design handcraft. It doesn't tread new ground per se or invite us to new frontiers. But it can feel comfortable in the current arena of automotive design.

@klier - yes, it's true. I am a conservative old whiner. If one man's bold is another's ugly then so be it.

Yup.
And so be it indeed. I don’t feel any urge to debate or defend anything regarding this design. I’ll let the vocal new crowd plus regular trolls make a kindergarten out of this thread and draw my own conclusions.

I’ll just stick to the “bold” part and patiently wait for the new 4er and how it’ll turn out.

what do you think about the side profile?

Profile looks much better compared to the 8 series.

4 concept has better proportions. And overall looks 2 times better than the 8.

What a bunch of conservative old whiners here on this forum, WOW! Incredible. Anything for a quick ‘funny’ or ‘like’.

Anyways. Bold BMW is back. Love it.

Wait hold up.. back? From where? Don’t you and your friends believe that they have been on the very top since 1916?

And no this doesn’t bring that back from the abyss of darkness they have been in since the E65 7er.. but hey why not try another X model.. paint it in that black
So you can’t see the damn thing while you at it! Lol
