I'm guessing the latter.

I have a deposit on an X5 as I type, and I need to decide what to do by the end of today, but I'm thinking I may cancel it and order a GLE just wind this clown up.
Holy cow!
You ordering an SUV?
I remember almost 10 years ago when you gave me a hard time for ordering an SUV and you could not understand why they were so appealing.
I am so glad you are onto the koolaid.
Welcome to the brotherhood brother.
On a more serious note, please do share your thoughts if you proceed with the purchase.

Really? That doesn't sound like me. :D

Thanks!

Actually, having driven the odd SUV over the years, I definitely get why people want to drive them. The raised driving position, space inside. However, a bit like when the Macan was launched three years ago, this X5 is a car that looks so desirable that you just want to own one. The fact that it's an SUV is an afterthought. In Europe though, with our congested cities and tiny streets, an SUV just seemed to be a hinderance. But, I'll have a 3 Series for day to day, so this X5 is going to be for long distance travel. We have a baby on the way, so we'll need the space. I did consider a 520d Touring, but as much as I admire it, I just don't crave it. The X5, I do.

Oh I most certainly am proceeding with the purchase. Should take delivery on the 5th July, all being well. It arrived at the dock a few days ago. It replaces the M4 Coupe (the R8 is the toy). I will definitely share my thoughts. I'm very happy with the spec I chose, so no second thoughts. Well, maybe with the colour. But I can't change it now. I test drove one a few weeks ago for about twenty minutes, which was about nineteen more minutes than I needed.

So you know this for every engine both companies build or is this just your usual clueless cheerleading? I can tell you that BMW's V8 is fragile and drinks oil like no tomorrow.

M

He speaks with amazing confidence for someone who doesn't, in my impression at least, have any experience of their own. I can't remember when he last posted his thoughts on a car he's ACTUALLY driven, if ever. Does he even have a driving license?

Now, there's nothing wrong with being an active part of a car forum without having the means to drive, but what I would question is how he can have such strong convictions about subjects he apparently has little experience of? It's almost as if they're based entirely on opinions of other people, such as car vloggers and print journalists.

It’s just clueless cheerleading or he’s a paid troll. As you say there has never been a single post about personal experience. My guess is that they’re a child.

He MUST be a child, as that would certainly explain a lot. But, imagine if he isn't.

Another one it’s the repeat of the 5er massacre :D

Typical Carwow/Mat Watson review really. I knew the outcome before I even watched a second of the video.

I find it just as easy to nitpick at the quality of the X5 as I do the GLE, yet he always fails to call out BMW's and Audi's on their quality shortcomings. And they're there make no bones about it. The ivory 'Individual' leather interior of this particular X5 would certainly help with showroom appeal.

This whole iDrive/MBUX debate is now silly. Sure he personally prefers the iDrive, but the new MBUX is just as intuitive with familiarity and offers some advantages over iDrive. They are both top shelf systems though with their pros and cons.

Offering a four pot on the Benz as a base model to compete with 6 cylinders from competitors is just price gouging by MB UK! Clearly forcing you to fork out even more quid to get the model you really want.

Also what's the point in complaining about 3rd row seats that are clearly intended for children on both the X5 and GLE? Eni did make a very good point some time back in another thread, and that is the Audi Q7 clearly benefits from being half a class larger than the X5 and GLE. Whereas Mercedes and BMW have the GLS and X7 to satisfy those wanting more space, and they make a pretty penny out of the extra $$ that privilege requires, Audi is playing both fields with the Q7 and the benefits in space and practicality are evident.

If you're in this market, comfort should be a priority IMO and this would cost the BMW a few points in my book, because not even my X3 M40i offers anywhere close to what I would describe as an enthusiastic/enjoyable drive experience. So I seriously doubt these behemoths are any better on that front.

Mark up another one for the Bimmer.

The Middle of Luxury: BMW X5 vs. Mercedes GLE and Porsche Cayenne

VERDICT

As far as the rankings of these particular cars goes, the Cayenne comes in last. Sure, it’s a highly competent piece of kit, but it doesn’t harbor quite enough classic Porsche genes to satisfy died-in-the-wool enthusiasts of the marque. It’s also too expensive and not sufficiently light and agile to emerge as a game-changing drive.

The duel between the X5 and GLE ends in a photo finish. Despite a clear on-paper lead in the horsepower and torque departments, the GLE failed to outpace its fellow combatants. A less fancy and more honest steering setup, less confusing infotainment system, and less gruff ride may have awarded the laurel wreath to the Benz, but it wasnot to be.

Like that of its rivals, the suspension of the BMW we tested can be rough, the design is very much an acquired taste, and we’re not totally convinced by that super-sharp steering. But the updated X5 from Germany’s Beer City clinched a narrow, bloodless victory. Its ergonomics are a little easier to use, it wins the performance chapter by a short head, and its movements are a touch more coherent overall.

On the whole, however, we found this trio to be overwrought, overpriced as equipped, and strangely underwhelming. That’s simply not good enough for the cream-of-the-crop darlings of a popular—and perhaps vastly overrated—market segment.

As said before: BMW have set up X5 to be more dynamic, aggressive, sharp than the previous generation (not less comfortable though than F15 due to optional air suspension on G05) due to now available brand new X7 which is more comfort oriented (although not clumsy to drive though; no wobbly suspension). It's called product differentiation. ;)

You can’t touch BMW ergonomics, reviews pretty much echoes most of the other reviews.......the B58 is a gem of an engine if in S58 guise it doesn’t claim at least one or two engine awards to extend its overall lead in IEOTY or Wards I’d be surprised.

Very much expected.

Can't wait for the walls of text on why it's wrong by the MB fanboys.

Oh ffs, nobody has made any fanboy comments yet. The only fanboy comments are from you, pre-empting fanboy comments.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I've no idea why someone would get such satisfaction from a car they have had zero input in winning a group test. I'm collecting my new X5 next week, and I couldn't give a flying f*** where it comes in a group test.

Mick doesn't post much any more and I know for a fact it's because of the relentless fanboy wars of which you're a major part of. They ruin this forum and people are just getting fed up of it.

This is a really great car and it's kicking some serious ass. Disappointed with the Q7 facelift because it was a real opportunity for Audi to take the fight to X5.

You are seriously a special and rare breed of stupid.

1) I may be many things, but "stupid" is not one of them. Try harder next time. Choose an insult that hits the general mark in terms of accuracy rather than throwing metaphorical darts and hoping one strikes.

2) Clearly it was a joke. I was creating an absurd situation, that of me cancelling an order for a car and choosing one that, in my opinion at least, is inferior, just to annoy someone on the internet who I've never met. Not realistic, but then it wasn't meant to be. The intention was to use hyperbole to indicate JUST how much I'm irritated. :D

It's all good, I've removed the comment and you may continue with you're trolling unopposed by me. Enjoy your new X5 (That's genuine sincerity from me).
