Dad just received this in an email from a VW salesman - prices are astounding! I was expecting at least them to be equal, and probably more to the outgoing model.. for comparison's sake, the MkIV R32 (which dad had) was around $64,000 and the 5-door manual 130i Sport is around $63,000.

To tempt you some more we have just received the new prices for R32.....WOW!!!!!!!

Are you saying ridiculous in that it's lower? With all the good options (Recaro, satnav, etc.) the price won't be that far off your MkIV depending on the door/transmission configuration.

Germaniac, I share the surprise - though from the topic heading, I was expecting it to be a bad surprise instead of pleasant! :D

That's really not too bad. They kinda had to kill the 130i though, which comes in at $62k, which to me, isn't such a bad price at all.

I'm also surprised they listed prices for 5-door versions. The previous R32 was 3-door only, and they made it like that to keep some sort of exclusivity. Now, the only 3-door Golf is the R32, but will come in 5-door as well. Maybe it's to take some heat off the 6 month waiting period of the GTI?

I suppose if you option it up a little (there's not really much I'd take of those five listed options, only the two cheaper ones) and it looks like DSG is standard, saving around $2300 or so. It might not be too bad, although I don't like the looks as much as the GTI.

Thanks for the news, Germaniac.

Yeah I was reading somwhere that the Australian importers of VW really pressed them over in Germany for more competitive pricing on all the new cars. The Golf range for the most part represents excellent value.

It's a crying shame then that we won't see such competitive pricing in SA - if the R32 comes our way at all. Damn, you Aussies have it good right now.

DSG doesn't look standard from the way I read it.

Martinbo, the problem is the WAITING LISTS. I went to enquire about the golf gti, and the dealer told me I'd be waiting for 8 months minimum. :t-banghea

Also, we still get ripped off on all other German car brands. You should see the prices and options lists...CRAZY!!

Carbon: bah. :D

And, where will the R32 be made? Surely if they also come from SA then you guys will get it, if later.

I would, too. It's a little lighter and not nearly as expensive. And looks better. Actually, my real hope is that the R32 alleviates the waiting list problem of the GTI here :D

However, what would be ridiculous would be if the insurance costs for the R32 are lower than those of the GTI, given its greater power and greater cost. However, I get the idea that insurance companies have it in for turbocharged cars, especially with some sort of sporting intent, so I wouldn't be completely surprised, just further disillusioned..
