36 days before the start of the Dakar Rally the Volkswagen factory team will be presenting itself at the Motor Show in Essen from 01 to 10 December.

All factory drivers and co-drivers will be meeting with the audience in interview and autograph sessions during the fair that attracts about 400,000 motorsport aficionados every year. Among others, at Volkswagen’s stand in hall 3, the evolution of the "Dakar" prototype of the Volkswagen Race Touareg 2 as well as a "Service Touareg", a vehicle designed to accompany the team during the Dakar Rally, will be showcased.

"The Essen Motor Show provides a superb opportunity to present our Volkswagen factory drivers and co-drivers as well as our evolution of the Race Touareg to an international audience,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "Visitors coming to Essen are as enthusiastic about motorsport as our team."

Present at the fair for interview and autograph sessions on Friday (01 December) will be the two-time World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz, Michel Périn and Fabrizia Pons, while on Saturday/Sunday (02/03 December) Giniel de Villiers, Mark Miller and Ralph Pitchford will be on stage. On the second weekend of the fair (09/10 December) the four-time "Dakar" winner Ari Vatanen and Dirk von Zitzewitz will be meeting with the fans, as will Jimmy Johansson, winner of the 2006 ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup and Volkswagen Junior René Rast, the 2005 Polo Cup Champion and runner-up in the 2006 Seat Supercopa Championship.

Volkswagen will enter four Race Touareg 2 cars for de Villiers/von Zitzewitz, Sainz/Périn, Vatanen/Pons and Miller/Pitchford in the 29th Dakar Rally starting in Lisbon on 6 January 2007 and ending after almost 9,000 kilometres in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, on 21 January. In the 2006 "Dakar" Volkswagen factory driver de Villiers finished as the runner-up; in addition, the South African claimed two victories and a second place in three events during the 2006 World Cup season.
