Probably because it’ll be the template for future mb design inside/out

I wouldn’t call it the template, there’s significant design differences between the exterior of this car and that of then C-class electric, for example. The CLA and its platform mates are going to be more youthful and techy looking inside and out.

Simply my personal perception...

The CLA, regardless of generation, has always been a "strange" car. Often thoroughly unphotogenic, but usually looking quite acceptable in the metal.

In addition, I'm remaining optimistic that the proportions of exterior architecture on future more elevated M-B model lines, from C upwards, will be far more svelte, athletically elegant than what we will see on the MMA sedans/shooting brakes. I'm already liking the looks of the camouflaged MB.EA electric C-Class sedan prototypes.

Why there's so much noise about this CLA? Not too practical, small trunk, cramped backseat. Its a small car that doesn't even sell well.

Just two reasons:
We'v seen nothing new for a long time. We will not see really new for a long time.

CLA will be the emergency exit for two groups of customers:
Those who are suffering of discontinued class A.
Those who are not willing to pay the obscene prices of class C.

It seems to be doing alright here in the UK. Seeing more and more of them on the road.

An entry level EV/hybrid with good range and performance will probably be very popular on company car schemes at the bottom end.

Especially if they price it right (<€45,000)

Its about the future EV...if this CLA can reach over 500km of real life usage then its a good step forward
And since this is how you said its a smaller car...this tech will translate on bigger Merc cars with even more range. Probably the real good starting point for ev is to have an 700-1000km range with an 10-100% charging under 30 min

We rarely disagree on design, but I would say the current CLA is a pretty car to begin with, and really comes into its own with the right spec.

I think this CLA will show us some interesting design elements obviously aimed at a younger demographic than us here.

And like many have pointed out here, it is a lower end MB, but there are a lot of hints about what's on the horizon for MB, with this car.

The new CLA with 85Kwh battery will achieve a range of over 750km WLTP which is virtually in the same league as the 118Kwh EQS but charge in about 21min compared to 31min in an EQS. This will probably be used in the FL EQS and all other future Mercedes EVs. So, the next EQS with the same battery tech could achieve close to 1000km with a 110kwh battery.

I know several guys which bought an A-Class in various engine iterrations from basic to 45S. 80% of them says A is fine for a guy, but the CLA is for girls. It would be better if MB would offer both CLA & A. A is more practical as well.
