Not to be outdone by marques like Bugatti and Bentley, Rolls-Royce is said to be readying a 16-cylinder roadster and a super-luxury utility vehicle.

Rolls-Royce first teased the idea of a 16-cylinder road car with the 2004 introduction of the 100EX (pictured), but the show car's 9.0L V16 never made regular production. However, according to Car Magazine, that will change by 2017.

One Rolls-Royce engineer told Car the decision not to put the V16 under the hood of the Phantom was “a mistake,” but that error will be rectified by 2017 with the launch of a new convertible model powered by the massive engine.

The super roadster, which will have no relation to the Wraith set to be unveiled in Geneva, will ride on a version of the aluminum chassis set to underpin the 2016 Phantom sedan. The roadster's long hood will conceal a V16 engine that will be good for at least 700 horsepower.

Despite those eye-popping numbers, Rolls-Royce isn't looking to dethrone the Bugatti Veyron as the world's fastest car. Instead, the roadster will stay true to Rolls-Royce's heritage, delivering opulent luxury with effortless power.

But Rolls-Royce's future vehicle plans don't stop with the 16-cylinder roadster. The British automaker has also been keeping tabs on Bentley's plan to release an SUV, and could be planning a super utility vehicle of its own.

“We’re monitoring the competition’s activities,” said Rolls-Royce boss Harald Krüger, “and we’re regularly debating whether to take action. This applies to all brand segments and technologies.”

No word on when Rolls' Bentley-fighting SUV might launch.

Rolls-Royce CEO confirms designers are already working on SUV

Rolls-Royce has given the clearest indication yet that it will build an SUV - and our exclusive image show how the amazing model could look.

Built at its Goodwood factory, and going on sale by 2017 at the earliest, the Rolls-Royce SUV will take on a rash of luxury 4x4s due over the next few years.

Rolls CEO Torsten Muller-Otvos has just put the successful launch of the Rolls-Royce Wraith coupe behind him. Now he’s desperate to develop new products for an increasingly important, fresher, younger breed of super-rich buyers – from high-profile sports, music and film stars to dot com billionaires. Despite their wealth, many are in their thirties or even twenties, could well be Chinese, and have a desire to own a Rolls – but not necessarily a ‘traditional’ limousine.
“The SUV segment is an interesting one,” Muller-Otvos told Auto Express. “There’s growth in the SUV sector and such a vehicle is thinkable. I’m open to that. Our design director, Giles Taylor, is already doing the first sketches.”

Blasphemy. If BMW wanted a luxury British SUV in it's line up, it should have held on to Land Rover.

Hope this won't be another white elephant design like the Bentley. I'm not entirely sure these kind of luxury designs lend themselves to the SUV shape.

Rolls-Royce SUV still a few years away

To cost at least 250,000 GBP

Rolls-Royce chief Torsten Müller-Ötvös acknowledged the company's designers are working on possible stylings for an SUV, but the car is still a few years away.
Rumors about a Rolls-Royce SUV have been swirling on the web for a considerable amount of time but without any exact and confirmed details. In an interview given to Autocar, Rolls-Royce chief Torsten Müller-Ötvös said designers are creating possible designs for the model which has not been confirmed for production. Even if it will, the car is still several years away so chances are it will be launched towards the end of the decade.
Müller-Ötvös added Rolls-Royce will not introduce a new model priced below the Ghost which means that if green-lighted for production the SUV will have a starting price of around 250,000 GBP. Production will take place at the company's Goodwood factory where they will have to add a third shift.

Rolls-Royce crossover concept digitally imagined

Keeping RR's design cues
Lutz Valdeig envisioned a potential Rolls-Royce soft crossover staying true to the brand's design philosophy.

He believes a possible Rolls-Royce crossover/SUV shouldn't be as rugged as some of the other models in this segment which is why the ground clearance is not that high and the concept lacks the usual off-road styling cues. You will notice several front fascia designs and in one of the versions there are subtle underfloor protection plates.

The overall design mimics Rolls-Royce's recent models but slightly more rounded while maintaining the conservative styling of the brand. A few of the design cues along with the double headlights are taken from the Silver Shadow and one of the renders shows an extended wheelbase created for those who prefer to be chauffeured.

In late October last year Rolls-Royce chief Torsten Müller-Ötvös said the firm's designers are creating a few design sketches for a possible SUV but even so such a model is still a few years away. When the model will eventually reach production day, it will be made at the Goodwood factory and will cost approximately 250,000 GBP.

Rolls-Royce crossover under development, could be launched in 2018

Could be positioned between the Ghost and Phantom
Rolls-Royce has been noncommittal about a crossover but the model is reportedly under development and codenamed "Cullinan" after the world's largest diamond.

Set to be introduced in late 2018, the crossover is slated to cost €275,000 ($372,000 / £221,586) and be positioned between the Ghost and Phantom. The company is reportedly targeting sales of 2000 units annually and a bulk of those are expected to come from the United States and the Middle East.

Little else is known about the model but it will reportedly use components from the X7 and 7-Series. There's also word that it will be a "real SUV" which can handle everything from sand to snow.

Engine options remain unconfirmed but there are rumors about a plug-in hybrid variant and a "torque-optimized" V12.

Rolls-Royce CEO says crossover 'definitely makes sense'
Says it hasn't been approved for production
Rolls-Royce CEO Törsten Müller-Ötvös has revealed a crossover "definitely makes sense.”

Speaking to reporters in Canada, Müller-Ötvös said the model hasn't been green-lighted but “we’re on it.” The executive also said he discussed the possibility of a Rolls-Royce crossover with owners and “everybody thinks it’s a fantastic idea." He went on to say that 90 percent of Rolls-Royce customers also own a Land Rover.

While Müller-Ötvös denied the model was approved for production, previous reports have suggested the company has already begun development on the model. It will reportedly be use components from the X7 and 7-Series and be launched in late 2018.

Rolls-Royce says they could redefine SUV sector but production decision still pending

Even if approved, it's still several years off
A Rolls-Royce representative has told Top Gear that if green-lighted for production, an SUV could redefine the segment.

In an interview given during the Ghost Series II's launch, the company's Global Product Communications manager Andrew Boyle said a decision regarding an SUV has not been taken yet but if green-lighted, such a model "may well redefine that kind of segment." He admits Rolls-Royce is considering this type of product and says the company's customer base is "certainly interested" in seeing the end result.

However, Boyle said that if approved for production it won't be a true SUV as Rolls-Royce is "certainly not utility, so it's not going to be that kind of car." He went on to say it won't compete with Bentley's upcoming SUV as "Rolls Royces are sold in the super luxury category."

Even if the company will eventually decide to produce this type of vehicle, it's still several years off as Rolls-Royce is currently focusing on the Phantom successor and also on a Wraith Drophead Coupe. There are talks of a late 2018 launch with a €275,000 price tag and with parts sourced from the next-gen BMW 7-Series and X7.
