No way they will scrap the A4 sedan. It's such an important product in China. For Europe and the USA maybe, but not in China.

Just guessing here...

But could we see an extended wheelbase, 3-Box version of the A5 Sportback-sized A4 eTron hatchback that could be built by Audi/FAW at the new "PPE Vehicle" production facility in Changchun ? I recall having read somewhere that an LWB, 3-Box version of the upcoming A6 eTron is planned and placed for the Chinese market, accompanying the Sportback and Avant versions.

Oh yeah. If we only get an A5 Sportback and no A4 Sedan, they might just make a 3-box A5 Sedan for China like they did for the A7.

2023 Audi A4 Rendered With Evolutionary Design, Combustion Engines
It will be the last conventional A4.

The next-generation Audi A4 is probably one of the best-kept secrets in the automotive industry. We’ve only seen two prototypes testing on public roads (see the related links below), but they were enough for our friends at Motor.es to create an accurate virtual preview of the new compact executive model. The result from their work is the rendering attached at the top of this article and below is everything we know about the new A4 so far.

There were early rumors that the new A4 could switch to the MQB platform, which would've saved the automaker about $1 billion from development costs. However, the plan was scrapped and the A4 will stick to the MLB, which means it will have longitudinally mounted engines. More importantly, the new generation will be the last for the series to feature combustion engines.

While many manufacturers are abandoning the diesel engine, the new A4 will have a range of gasoline and diesel engines, almost certainly featuring some sort of electrification. The new generation will be the last to have an exhaust pipe, though a fully-electric version is also believed to be in the cards for the new model. Audi's head of technical development confirmed in a report from October last year the A4 EV will be based on the PPE platform, if it gets the green light for production.
We have little reasons to believe the design of the new A4 will represent a major departure from today’s car. On the contrary - as this new rendering previews - we expect the exterior appearance of the A4 to be more of a heavy facelift of the current generation rather than a brand new design language.

It’s difficult to predict when the 2023 Audi A4 will debut, though we know it will remain on sale until the end of the decade. Our educated guess is a late 2022 debut with sales and production likely to begin during the first half of the year, depending on the situation with the chip shortage and several other factors.

Appears to be very "no nonsense". And visually as exciting as a bowl of oatmeal.

Audi need to make a revolutionary step with the A4, its way too conservative and needs some dose of excitement to match the 3-series, C-class and Model 3 and also the Giulia.

Audi doesn't really do "revolutionary" when it comes to exterior design. The C3 Audi 100/200 certainly. The B3 Audi 80/90, I may add. The first TT, of course. The etron GT ? I dunno...could've been..but too much going on there. But otherwise ? They're more into sporting albeit conservative (often too repetitious) elegance. On occasion, Audis can appear a bit too "risk averse" and...yes..."bland". But I appreciate their reluctance to rely on tacked-on, afterthought gimmicks and attempting to market said gimmicks as "bold". The cars don't scream "LOOK AT ME !!". Personally, I get it.

Honestly very very pleased with these spy shots. Even though it is looking a little bloated and the front is giving me Ford Fusion, I think the final model will look very good.

Not to mention the more aggressive roofline like the A6 Avant, I love it! And the circular tailpipes are coming back! Diffuser looks like it's the final design just camoed, minus the larger tips that usually go on. Really hoping they bring this to the US, though with rumours of no Allroad for this gen.. it might not :(

The B10 mules appear to be far sleeker than the A6 eTron Sportback mules. That's weird. And disappointing. And should not at all be that way.

I can only hope that the camo on the A6 eTron mules is very efficiently deceptive and that something of beauty lurks under that funky paisley Halloween costume.

I'm excited haha. I'm glad the ICE cars are looking better. For me both the A6 and Q6 E Trons are both looking very bloated.

We haven't seen any single prototype of sedan version so far. Does it mean that Audi is following same strategy as VW with next gen Passat?

I hope the final details in the production car will lift it up as what is seen by the disguised mules the new A4 Avant looks very boring like watching wall paint dry. Its hardly changed compared to the current model. Only maybe the door handles, which surprised are also flush but in a different design to BMW and Mercedes.

I disagree. This feels more like a proper change in design unlike the B9 which was still similar to the B8. A lot more rakish and aggressive roofline alongside what looks like better flaring of the wheel arches.

This just more of the same. Audi really need to try something daring whilst still maintaining their brand identity.

While hardly "dramatic", I can appreciate the relatively uncluttered, easily comprehendable exterior design. The proportions of the architecture are well-balanced.

What concerns me a bit more is the upcoming A6 eTron Sportback/Avant. The concepts are attractive, but production-bodied mules continue to appear a bit ungainly. Hopefully, it's just the deceptive swirlyfoil camo.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
