Oh how the mighty have fallen

Found this older AMS article surveying vehicle reliability. Basically, the first table shows the distance the car(s) traveles before it breaks down and requires a tow, the second shows the distance traveled before an unschedualed stop to a mechanics because of an unusual failure.

All those Benzes are from the W123 range, which I have been forever stressing as one of the best Mercedes ever. But everyone doesn't believe me and votes for POS AMG's just because of 0-60 times. :D

It was once a dream for the other carmakers to touch Mercedes-Benz...until 1994... :jpshakehe
Oh, there was no Lexus in there, so no fair. :)
OK, seriously, MB needed thing to cange after its disastrous situation in the early 90's. Those measures have distroyed the uber-engineered image, but have saved the company.

My grandfather had a white w123 230E with navy blue leather interior - it was his dream car. So yes, I promise, I do believe you...

Chris, I assure you, you are not the only one who loves the W123.

I have long been a fan of the LWB limousine W123. When I was a child in the late 1970's, the wife of an American diplomat, who lived in my street, drove her children to school every morning in one. I always admired the understated sophistication of it - even when I was five years old, I recognized true greatness when I saw it.

The only problem with the W123 is that all the ones I see around here look like they've done at least 852,778 kilometers... seeing one that has been cared for properly is too rare a sight.

I don't think there are too many current MB's that are breaking down and requiring a tow after a relatively short distance travelled. I would expect that the current average MB would still last well over 100,000km before a mechanical failure that would require a tow.

I would agree that they have more of an issue with the right side of the chart, the unscheduled trips to the shop for non-mechanical related issues.

I'm drooling over it. I love the charming W123 series. Seriously, I'd take that over any AMG or hi-performance supercar anyday. ;)

Beauty! It's one of my favorite Mercedes-Benzes ever, in fact, when I was a kid growing up, that's the car that got me sucked into the MB brand. I saw them everywhere in Germany, and also in the Philippines when I lived there. Beautiful solid engineering. Hands down the best engineered and durable Mercedes-Benz of all times.

I read an article on taxi drivers in North Africa and how they all drive W123's with 7-figure mileages on the odometers. One of them said something along the lines "That this car just refuses to die, even under those harsh conditions of the North African dessert." :eek2:

Hence IMO, the W123 is the Mercedes that deserves the most respect. Not some 4.2 second E55 AMG or CLS55 AMG or E500 etc. Power doesn't make good cars. ;)
