It’s where we are in the world. The EV push means heavier cars for most segments. M5 is not an exception. They could have went balls to the wall and brought out a V8 ICE. But a hybrid offers both columns of the spectrum.
It will be interesting to watch. Just be glad that you lived through an NA V8 as well as a V10 that are forever hitched on your memory.

I think the M5 would be less cumbersome to cross the ice. If it does well on a lake in Arjeplog? Should do well in Alaska?

From the hybrid examples seen so far, it offers neither. It will be way heavier, slower and less efficient than a BEV.
