Vs Edmunds Inside Line - BMW M6 Convertible vs. Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG

I agree, the 55 would have been better suited to compete here. However, I would pick the SL, especially given that an SL, IMO, should have a 12 under the hood. Period!

I do not particularly like the 6 series range, although BMWs have turned me around recent months. The design still turns me off (the convertible looks like a bloated Camaro to me), but I am very attracted to their options in terms of sportiness. Somehow, an old fashioned Mercedes 5 speed auto seems too plebean when compared to the 7 speed SMG. Also, the SL's interior seems too plain and unluxurious--by the latest standards, I mean.

There is plenty here that Mercedes can learn to get the next SL just right. They will need to step a bit off the GT route, similarly to what Ferrari did to their 599. After all the SL 65 is on the same playing field as the 599--and conversely, the CL 65 competes with the 612.

I am also looking forward to what BMW will soon offer as direct competitors to the SL, i.e. the Z8 successor. That would then be a proper comparable to the SL 65.
