I am more of a MB fan than BMW or Audi, but I would choose the M5 or the S6 just on the basis of looks. The E sedan just isn't good looking for me at all. It is just too soft in appearance.

You don't find the M5 looking too much like a 520d M-Sport?

Only the M550i looks the most aggressive and distinguishable in the G30 line up.

Did I miss something in this discussion? I mean looks and sound are somewhat subjective, so there can't be a discussion. I fully understand that both those properties can be important to potential buyers and drive the decission.
Head-to-Head dragstrip tests were indifferent. Some wins by the Merc, some by the M5. Did anyone make a statistics here??? Regarding handling (track/lap-times) I am only aware of wins of even vanilla M5 (non Competition) over the E63S (E63 is ignored anyway). So I am 100% sure, that even non-competition M5 is clearly faster on track.
But if someone could come up with a complete listing of tracktimes of different magazines to support me (or prove me wrong), that would be helpful. Then we would have to update the list eventually with F90 Competition laptimes :)
From reading the various comments in MBworld.com it is also interessting, that the common feedback is, that F90 (non Competition!) is more comfortable than E63S although being faster at the track at the same time, which is an astonishing achievement.

I start with the list of track time results … from the german magazines :)
I think many/most of the tests have been provided by @DeDe in form of scans here at GCF.

Magazine Track M5 63S
sport auto Nordschleife 7:39 7:45 (T)
sport auto Hockenheimring 1:10,6 1:11,6 (T)
AB sportscars Sachsenring 1:34,36 1:35,90
AB Contidrom 1:31,08 1:31,46
Autozeitung Nürburgring GP 1:38,4 1:39,9

So - in all of the track tests in german magazines the vanilla M5 has won over the E63S.

Respect to the M5 for sure, but the number are so damn close.
Never in history has the E63 been so performance oriented and capable. Come face/lift time things will definitely improve and the performance gaps should be even closer.

Posted a few months back. The M5 did not win here. Its all going to come down to personal preference

They said E63 S is faster accelerating car than M5, not faster on track...

E63 vs M5 all over again and again LOL.
What I like about this new M5 is that it's a progress over the old one. Previous M5 wasn't praised for handling and driving fun. This have changed this time, now it's up there with E63s and sometimes better than E63S. That was definitely not the case with previous M5. So in my eyes BMW done a better job/update than MB this time.
(not going to mention non S-version of E63, that version feels like outdated compare to M5 and E63S).

What MB need to improve for E63S next time is driving comfort, been a lot of complaints about a harsh ride.

I always find it funny that people take these acceleration times and especially lap times serious. It’s great for making fun of the other camp, but that’s really all there is.

The thing that matters is the amount of fun you have on an everyday basis in these cars and there from the engine sound down to the steering feel and the torque the E63S wins.

Then the other part is the usability or let’s say easy to live with factor.
And here with the comfort the M5 is better.

The only 2 points mb fans are trying to make are:

1. The gap has closed to damn near nothing
2. Things have switched around it used to be opposite with the Mercedes more for comfort. And you all used to talk shit then.

But will the bmw fans admit ?
No probably not , why ?
No one knows

And the M5 wins with the higher revving, sportier engine and broader set of dynamics. It also has the nicer cockpit imo. And it's measurably lighter too...

That's the truth - there's next to nothing differentiating what are both two large, heavy, bi-turbo hot-vee V8, configurable AWD four door luxury saloons.

Coz obvs bro. Where's the fun in that?

What BMW manage with the new M5, while the driving comfort is better than E63 they still manage to achieve good laptimes and being a great drive too. I think its funny that MB fans always talked about driving comfort as a good thing but now when MB obviously have harsher ride then it's all good.
Personally I think these cars are too large and heavy to toss around with. I rather have the M2.

Sportier engine? how?
Typically of BMW, the square, cross-flowed manifold S63B44T4 engine in the M5 revs freer and does its best work at the top of the rpm range over the under-square M177's more muscular delivery lower down in the rev range in spite of both engines being turbocharged.

I think that the BMW has a slight advantage, because the basic car in the form of a 520d or whatever is the sportier and lighter car. So they have to do less to transform it into the beast that the M5 is than Mercedes has to.

I always have to smile quietly to myself because it's always E63S vs M5. Not E63 straight but always the S variant.

My own personal perception is like this...
Mercedes Benz: "Yeah we've got an E63 and it's nice and all, but, actually, don't bother with that, you don't what it. What you really want is an E63S, yes, that's way better - forget about the E63."
BMW: "The standard specification M5 is all that you'd ever need in an M5 - it's a consummate all-rounder. That said, if you're looking for something more uncompromising and even more performance-focused then there's the M5 Competition."

Is there any test of the E63 ever made?
