Prestige German car maker Audi has been declared Manufacturer of the Year 2005 by the Midland Group of Motoring Writers.

Audi took the award by a single point from Honda, first winner of the title in 2003. In third spot was last year’s top achiever, Renault.

The award is voted for by the 30-plus members of the Midland Group of Motoring Writers who between them write for publications with a total circulation of more than seven million.

Unlike most other motor industry accolades, the Midland Group’s award is much more than simply a car of the year contest. These days, issues such as safety, the environment and perceived value for money all play as important a role in determining consumer choice as badge image and driving dynamics.

So Midland Group members are asked to assess each company on six specific criteria – advertising, design, safety, quality, customer care and green credentials – and to award points in each category.

Audi scored 424 points to Honda’s 423 and the 408 totalled by Renault. In bottom place was Proton with 170 points.

Midland Group chairman Ian Donaldson will present the 2005 trophy – a specially commissioned piece of silverware – to Audi UK early in the new year.

Well done to Audi, they are selling really well here at the moment!

I can't believe Renault came third, they aren't that good IMO.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
