I agree with you about the Americanization of MB's designs - I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing, but it is ironic you should say that considerring Chris Bangle is an American.

Not to be nit picking, but your avatar is an M6 rear....

I'm not sure about MB becoming Americanized but I know what you mean about BMW. Their design philosophy is controversial, and they know it. To Me MB tries a little to hard to be pleasant for everyone where as BMW builds to be awsome for some and ugly for others. They're bold with their styling, which is what mercedes lacks. They use hard lines where mercedes uses bubbly soft lines. I love mercedes, dont get me wrong, but the styling is too generic.

P.S. my friend had breakfast with Chris Bangle since he wants to become a designer for BMW. My dad has also met Bangle. I havent yet :t-banghea
But if and when I do i am going to SLAP him and then compliment his designs.

Just so evyerone knows why I have an M5 rear in my avatar, and so I don't have to go from thread to thread getting rained on about why I made my switch and what not... To start, I'm still very much a big MB fan, but it's just not the same anymore for me, the designs have moved further and further away from traditional MB styling to something more American IMO, while a few new designs that I've seen I like, this is the overall feeling i've come to find. BMW's core philosphy reflects more of my ideals in as far as what I look for in a car, not to mention I give them props for having pushed the design envelop so far that they've revolutionzed auto design in general. There's more to it, but I feel that enough has been said. :usa7uh:

:usa7uh: :usa7uh: Glad to read it, man!

Lol..he won't know what hit him... :D

As for Americanisation of MB designs i agree. Like i have said before CLS and new S class (in a smaller extend) show that Mercedes is very interested in US market and is now designing their cars accordingly.

Sometimes I don't understand what people think Mercedes is supposed to do. They've always stayed true to their roots and up until recently they never chased fads like big wheel arches and what not. Mercedes has always been conservative elegance and that is what they should always be, a univerally good looking design. I would love to know how Brunno reacted once he saw the new S, because for all its glory those wheel arches (especially in the rear) are just too much imo.

My problem with Benz right now (although I am still a fan of Benz, just not as much as BMW) is that their lineup is just not consistent. This is what I mean:

A class: I guess it's supposed to aim at the female population but that does not give Benz a good name... too low class?

B class: Not necessary

C Class: Getting very old, needs update immidiatly

E class: Not as dated as C class, but needs refresh soon.

CLS: Brilliant car... finally won me over after I saw it in real life. AMG model a killer looking car

Slk: Obviously a real hit... I think an awesome car as well

S class: i think MB did a good job. Some design elements I don't agree with but I am sure I will fall in love with a silver S class with amg package

ML: Especially AMG version, looks just so mean.

R class: No comment

So you see, some really good spots and some really bad spots... B and R class aimed at the US I'm sure. The reason I like BMW more is that I like the 1er, 3 er, 5 er, 6er, 7er... overall, much more consistent.

MB saw that BMW dared and succeed to be bold and not consistent. BMW are selling more cars than ever and MB want the same thing :usa7uh:

Well I'll just quote myself for the second time today.

I think the new design direction at MB was a direct response to the market demanding more dynamic and interesting designs. I'm sure MB have also been looking enviously at BMW doing extremely well with their daring designs; so although, still more conservative than BMW, I don't think it is fair to say that Mercedes-Benz's designs are not distinctive.

It would also be worth nothing that the market for Mercedes-Benz has changed markedly over the last 10-15 years;they have gone from being a brand associated with conservative, middle-aged, men in business suits, to having a very youthful and dynamic image. Mercedes was always a brand of the "establishment" but it has transformed itself into a brand that appeals to a much broader market these days.

hehehe - but maybe you should stay by the phone, because beween the old A class and that new F600 concept, Mercedes are well on their way to creating something equally vomit-inducing.

You can send me your number right now cause for me CLS is far worse than X3. ;)

Ouch... that's going to get some response no doubt.
The X3 is not the most attractive car, but there are worse out there. For example, that R class is not a good looking car at all (dunno what Benz is trying to do). That is far uglyer than the X3.

Well, here's my take on MB:

- CLS (AMG) = awsome, best MB design since the 300 SL.
- R = klasse, good design, awsome with AMG.
- M & SLK = boringly & blandishly overconservative, but very good with AMG.

The rest, old and/or unworthy cars of wearing the MB badge (sadly not even the SLR can be saved, because those hidious headlights and GT profile, instead of must be supercar profile).

Like the X3 WTF is that?? call me when MB designes a car so hideous..

Well it's called the W221 S copy-klasse. Once the ephitome of luxury sedans,
now a blandish/japanese/for USA tastes, ephitome of ripp-offs. :t-banghea

Of course, nowadays, BMW leads in almost every way, cause they are coherent. They're image goes back to the 60s to cars such as the 2002.
And even that, was created to resurect their sporty image created in the 30s by cars like the 328.
With the 328, they put the driving pleasure (handling, agility, sporty but not spartan feeling) in sport cars, and with the 2002 in sedans.
So what has MB done. Look I understand they had to change things, but what is "everything to everyone" supose to mean, "nothing particulary special" ?!

This is a very good looking familycar, dont expect something that looks like an SLR... And I think it looks thousend times better than the "comic"-looking 1-series...
