The X7 has truly thrown down the gauntlet. This GLS better be a class act.

I actually don't think the X7 brought anything new to the class and its a bit small for the U.S. It is superbly executed though and that part can't be ignored. Mercedes knows this market well and I have no reason to believe they won't rise to the challenge.

Mercedes also has the advantage of customer feedback from existing owners. They are well equipped with knowledge about things to add or improve that will make the new GLS a knockout.

You've seen the GLS?

Just reckless speculation, have not seen the vehicle.

Third gen, and MB seems to be better able to move the needle as far as packaging goes (based on new x5 and gle). Think it will look great based on the past two gens and new GLE. And should drive equally well or better in right trim (current gls 500/550 with active roll is an awesome drive and new gle getting nice reviews for breadth of talents).

Maybe thrash is too strongly worded, but I expect the gls to be the superior vehicle for people who want a dynamic, comfortable, awesome looking 6-7 seater.

One article I've read says it will debut at the LA autoshow.

I don`t think so judging by the amount of camo that the car has on it. I would place my bet on Beijing 2019 in April. It has too much camo on it to be revealed in maximum 1 month.

Yeah. April seems more plausible given how slowly the GLE was shedding its camo. I'm wishing for a debut at the Detroit autoshow.

Mercedes is not participating at Detroit for 2019.

Mercedes used to debut many of its new models at Detroit, why wont they be at 2019 show?

Not sure exactly, but Mercedes, BMW and Audi have all pulled out for 2019. IMO they're not getting much of a return from Detroit. The Detroit area market is strongly domestic and it's a miserable weather situation in Jan in Detroit so it's kinda off putting to the press and show goers. I didn't mind the weather and looked forward to it. The Detroit show moves to June for 2020 and I suspect the Germans will come back at that point.

The entire German contingent has pulled out Audi,BMW,Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. VW is the only German brand still standing for NAIAS
They wanted to move the NAIAS to October which would affect Alternating Paris and Tokyo shows but have a knock on effect to the major IAA event for German dominance.
Now they are looking to move to June. But my sources have said that this is not acceptable due to the Goodwood festival also taking place in July.

OICA lists a Mercedes-Benz World Premiere(s) for LAIAS and someone confided that the GLB and CLA will expect to debut in Geneva next March.
Because of no NAIAS manufacturers are doubling up on the launches because after LAIAS it's Geneva in March.

Check your sources Scotty, it's been official for a while now that from 2020 onward, the Detroit (NAIAS) will be in June:
