Despite that article I still don't belive this.
When they designed it they went through the things it needed to reach the targeted 400km/h and one of those things were power and they concluded that they simply couldn't raise the power any more for various reasons.
And just raising its top speed by only a few mph would require several million dollars of further developement which VW can't afford since they already loose enough money on the project. And lets not talk about all the money needed to modify the drivetrain.
It would'nt surprise me if some crazy rich dude decided to tune his veyron to that power and maybe change the clutch but I find that top speed just far to high to come from the factory. Even at all for that matter.

No thats not the case. The VAG boss at the time got the design of the veyron and told his engineers he wants a reliable, 1001ps car thats extremly comfortable and has a top speed of 400kmh. That was the design criteria and they sticked with it and achieved it. Now theyre going all out and seeing what they can do without the strict criteria.
Also the S7 cant hold a candle to the veyron in top speed or acceleration. The koenigsegger has a similiar top speed but the veyron completly out accelerates it and is reliable unlike the koenigsegger.

Seeing all the headaches and NASA-like pain VAG went through getting the Bugatti to come to life, I really take competing claims to the "ultimate car" throne with a grain of salt.
Sure, maybe Saleen or some similar performance developer can cough up a car that meets or exceeds the Bugatti on some quantitative claim, but we can be sure that we'll be talking about crude, street-legal racecars, not consummately sophistocated luxury chariots.
The Veyron is already a marvel on wheels, but if they want to up the ante even more, if ony to keep the dogs at bay, I'm all for it.

I absolutely agree with you Osnabrueck, the constant obsession with the Veyron's top speed often neglects the fact the Veyron is more than just fast; as you correctly stated, the Veyron is "a marvel on wheels". It is extraordinary in every respect, not only for it's astonishing speed. It's utterly uncompromising attention to detail and spectacular engineering will ensure the Veyron will always be recognized as something truly rare and inspired.Osnabrueck said:

Boggles the mind. What boggles even more is the thought that such an enormous power boost yields a meager 20mph increase in maximum speed.
Just goes to show how awesome the resistance of our atmosphere becomes once you go north of 200mph.
I wonder what effect the additional grunt could have on the car's already insane sprint time.

VEYRON GETS 1420HP
The power upgrade is soon official. The next two cars coming out of the factory will have 1210hp guaranteed, but could be up to 1230. Bugatti are still working on the full range upgrade that means 1420hp. The extra power won't cost anything extra and will be offered to all already purchased cars. The factory says that the 1230hp version is unreal and absolutely violent! Just imagine the 1420hp version!
