![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: First drive - X5 E70 Another first test of the new X5: ![]() ![]() Luxury abounds. From the satisfying fragrance and texture of the leather interior, to the real wood trim and perfectly fitted carpets, the entire vehicle shouts quality and exclusivity. Even the base audio system, with its 12 speakers and 240 watts of power is better than most vehicles' premium units. In contrast, the X5's premium unit features 16 speakers, with two sub-woofers, digital signal processing, and sounds like you're sitting right next to Pavarotti, Pink Floyd or Metric's Emily Haines fighting her own personal war, depending on your musical tastes, of course. http://www.luxurycarcanada.com/features/features_articles.php?fetch_feature_article=07_bmw _x5_pw_.php&pass_title=2007%20BMW%20X5 I really like the interior the most. It might be the best BMW interior going righ now. M

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Edmunds Inside Line - First Drive ![]() ![]() My aren't you pretty! ![]() My favorite BMW interior at the moment. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But as Tom Purves would surely point out, utility was never really the point of the X5. It still isn't. The goal was to build a premium SUV-like thing that handles like a BMW. With more luxury, surer handling and just a pinch of additional utility, the new X5 remains atop that niche — whatever you call it. This thing really blows the ML out of the water in my book. Mercedes had better come up with a ML450/550 quick along with some interior modifications ala the CLS/S/SL. M

Cars like the BMWs and Porsches were never the most practical of cars. There seems to be a trend to go luxury and this all rounder non-sense at the expense of ones (ever more diluted) DNA. | |

Plus, the X5 E70 is a huge car. Biggest one BMW has ever made. That kinda explains the huge weight (which is ok for a SUV!)

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: E70 X5 press test drives & reviews I'm glad that this X5 has 3 row seats because that was my main issue with the X5 and still is with the ML. If I wanted 2 row seats, then why do I need a SUV? A car is just fine...hell I'd rather opt for an Audi Allroad than get an SUV if I need the space that cars don't have. But since this X5 has 3rd row seats...it will sell even more than before.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: E70 X5 press test drives & reviews Imhotep...The ML is nice but for my family's needs we would need 3rd row seats. I'm happy this X5 has it. My mom is thinking about selling her Honda Van and get an SUV (yes, she is a safe driver..LOL). It might be a year before she finally decides to get a new car but we are thinking about either the GL or Q7...now I might have to throw the X5 in the mix if it offers the same type of room as the other two.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: E70 X5 press test drives & reviews I agree with you Warot. The performance is a second priority. I mean sure it's cool to say that "my suv is faster than yours" or "my suv handles just like a car" but in all honesty. Anyone who thinks about driving thier SUV like a car doesn't belong on the road...Just like on a normal basis my mom never needs a capable off-roader. It is just something that my parents can use to haul supplies around for our business...and the van's not so powerful V6 isn't cutting it anymore

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: E70 X5 press test drives & reviews Sorry but BMW was never the most practical of the bunch. Its emphasis was on driving. A lower mass helps driving dynamics. If it doesn't suit you, buy an Audi or VW or whatever. I feel that this time MBs idea was better (sadly MB is no BMW/Porsche). |

No matter how stereotypical the 'soccer mom' thing is, it's actually very true for the US market, so it was simple common sense to grow the X5 to cater to a larger market (and a very lucrative one at that!) I'm wondering.. do you guys expect BMW to walk away with the SUV/SAV segment again ? .. or do the ML and Q7 actually have a fighting chance? (Im refering only to the German brands, not all SUV makers in the market)Even more interesting question to me... can BMW (with their new X5 and facelifted X3) give Lexus a run for their money in terms of SUV/SAV sales?
