We've had that for some time now already. Ths must be the DSG like transmission.

But I was thinking more that it is a SMG tranny for ALL bimmers. Somehow I don't think that it is a DSG tranny. The SMG in the M5 and M6 seem to be working pretty good, except for in automatic mode and it seem a bit weird if BMW would replace the transmission this early.

Re: New X5 E70 spy pictures (and videos) - part 3

Pay attention: the layout of shifter is identical to the one of Steptronic automatic gerbox - except the P position is selected by pushing a button on the top of the lever: pronouncing shift-by-wire technology even more.

But ... is this really just a modernized Ver. 2.0 of Sportautomatic Steptronic or is it something more advanced ...

All will be clear very soon ...

Sorry, the price would be just too high. I have to be very careful not to open my mouth to much.

I can only tell what I'm allowed to tell.

And this goodie is not on the "allow" list.

But remember: "The new X5: Change the rules"

But: one of you got the answer right!

Re: New X5 E70 spy pictures (and videos) - part 3

Rememebr the rumours about E70 would have similar Automatic / Steptronic steering wheel mounted shifting lever just like E65 7er?

Now you can see the rumours were wrong. There is a completely new shifting lever - also showing "by-wire" presence by its futuristic design and all the little buttons incorporated.

But what is beneath the skin? Just a new (classic) Steptronic or something more advanced?

Think!

Just to puzzle you a bit more: Why E92 Coupe with super sporty Steptronic automatic haven't got the same shifter as E70 & facelifted 5er will get it? Why they need to test the new lever (look at 5er spy pics) if only a Steptronic lever would be new? Would BMW really debut DCT / ZSG in a X5? In 5er: would this replace SMG or Steptronic? Why E90 3er still isn't ofered with SMG, while 5er & 6er are?

Think!

Or: wait for another 7 days and you'll get the answer.

Re: New X5 E70 spy pictures (and videos) - part 3

I have a probelm to see that BMW is going to offer both SMG, DSG and a regular automatic. Why so many gearboxes?

Someone likes this, someone that... I only know that one day when i buy X5 it definitely won't be manual... No pleasure with manual in 2 tonns SUV... In M cars yes, but in X5 no.

You said a while back...like in december that BMW is developing a DSG...and if is in the 5er it must be one of those buying a facelift car get newer tech things...thats why e90 aint got smg cause they can put it in right away since a facelift wont be for a while...my 2cents

Also pay attention to the buttons on the shifter's panel: they are not saying "Power", "DSC", "EDC" like in M5, but "Sport", "Auto-H", "Stau" (Traffic jam).

Get it?

Maybe it's the "Active Transmission"? Here's an article about the X3 concept where it was featured:
(scroll down to "BMW Know-How at Its Best: the Active Transmission")
