The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986. The BMW M4 is a high-performance version of the BMW 4 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M, that has been built since 2014. I think the Competition Package deserves its own thread. The M3 (F80) Competition Package has made its World Premiere at the Washington DC Auto Show, whilst the M4 (F82) Competition Package has made its debut at the Houston Auto Show. Both in Mineral White.

I must say, the wheels are starting to grow on me. Odd thing I noticed is that on the M4 GTS the fronts are 19 inch with aspect ratio of 35 whereas on the competition pack the fronts are 20 and 30.

I suspect ride comfort is a function of both suspension and tire side wall. Does anyone here have experience with driving low profile 20inch tires on a regular basis? if yes, kindly share.

The new Competition Package for the BMW M3 and M4 was added to the www.bmw.de online configurator. The 444 horsepower (450 hp in Europe) will cost $5,500 for the M3 sedan and M4 Coupe, and $5,000 for the M4 Convertible. In Europe, the same package costs 7,300 euros for the coupe and sedan, and 6,400 euros for the convertible.

The Competition Package includes Adaptive M Suspension – which has been extensively tuned to the enhanced performance and handling – new springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, along with reconfigured driving modes (Comfort, Sport and Sport+). BMW also retuned the electronic differential and the Dynamic Stability Control to match the upgraded hardware.

Exclusive forged, machine-polished, weight- and rigidity-optimized 20-inch M alloy wheels – front 9J × 20; rear 10 J × 20 – with exclusive multi-spoke 666 M styling and mixed tires (front: 265/30 R20, rear: 285/30 R20) complete the list of chassis upgrades.

An M sports exhaust system with black chrome tailpipes and a louder growl is included in the price as well.

The interior remains largely unchanged, but Competition Package cars get new lightweight sport seats with seatbelts with woven-in BMW M stripes.

It costs about 10% more than a normal M4 but only has additional 19PS (14kw) of extra power, is it really worth the extra? Those wheels are also worse looking than the standard rims in my opinion.

Hopefully they can correct some of the traction issues I've read about,but for now competition package or not,it's still the king of hill. Even If the completion is increasingly nipping at its heals.

Traction issues is what you are looking for in this segment. Don't like it? Buy a Passat 4-motion.... or an old 911 Cup car. They are the same.
 
Well,I'm not disagreeing nor am I going to wax poetic in defense of being an enthusiast. What I said has merit and the M3 has been criticized quite often for being a little too hairy near its limit,but again this being the Internet and all, where everyone is of course a Monkey Harris,those things are trivial and take away from the spirit of driving :rolleyes:

You could have a second (sixth?) hand cup car for the same price as an average well speced people-mover. That's today's market!
 
Autocar drives an M3 and they say (conclusion + portion on the suspensions ) :
Throw in the swagger of bigger, shinier wheels, black gloss exterior trim and the slightly deeper melody of the sports exhaust, and the Competition Pack’s £3k premium easily qualifies as a no-brainer. Which is handy, because BMW expect as much as 80 percent of UK buyers to take up the option. I certainly would.
Its addition doesn’t perhaps elevate the F80 to classic status, but it makes the M3 feel like a far more complete and likeable solution than previously.
By retaining this splendidly thin and tactile layer of compliance (I’d hazard a guess that most of the Pack's premium is eaten up by the dampers) the Competition Pack’s tacked-down firmness not only enhances the M3’s poise and composure across the board, but also increases the amount of feedback registered in the steering wheel and seatbacks. No where is this more telling than in the realisation that its Sport Plus mode, previously an unrelenting suspension setting best reserved for the track, is not only selectable on British roads - but actively desirable.

Auto Express drives an M4 with the package and they reach quite a different conclusion, in particular for the suspensions :
To drive, the Competition Pack definitely feels superior in most ways compared with the regular version, and that's backed up by the way it looks, even the way it sounds, thanks to its standard fit sports exhaust. Together, such upgrades make the Competition seem like a bargain, even if they do place the M4 right on the cusp of what's acceptable when it comes to ride and noise refinement on the average UK road.

That's harder and harder to follow those British magazines recently... unless M3 and M4 are tuned differently.
