Martin and Guibo, thanks alot guys. You must forgive me, I'm very intruiged by the engineering that goes into vechicles. One more question. In the graph, are those steps in the 599 graph indicating gear changes?

^ Pleasure! No worries, though, that's the whole idea of the tech talk forum. We learn from each other.

Yep, exactly, a long first gear run to thereabouts 80 km/h then a shift to second at 120 km/h, 3rd sees a change up at 160 km/h and so on...

Interesting article by Modified Magazine comparing various DCT's, a manual, and an automatic. They test a Mitsubishi Evo with TC-SST (dual clutch), 6-speed manual GTI, GTI with DSG, M5 with SMGIII, and Lexus IS-F (auto) with 2nd-to-3rd gear shifts, and then downshifts.

http://www.modified.com/tech/sccp_0812_fastest_transmission_tech/index.html

Summary:

The graphs for the DCT's and the automatic IS-F show little to no reduced acceleration on the upshifts. As expected, the M5 shows reduced acceleration but is very quick. And brutal, as the longitudinal g's indicate. It's also very fast on the downshift, though perhaps the extremely revvy nature of the engine with low flywheel effect helps there.

^ Gave you thanks.
Removed thanks.
Rather gave Karma.
But I had to spread it around first.
Gave you thanks again.

Guibo - you rock.

Interesting how the old slushbox torque convertor auto continues to make a name for itself as a viable and capable piece of transmission kit. In my opinion, only the most specialised sporting cars like 911s, GTRs, Italia's and M3 GTSs need dual clutch gearboxes. For the rest, well I could care less that a Jag XFR has a conventional auto - it suffers none for it.

Here's the question: what should the new M5 be? DCT or 8 speed auto?

It should be manual IMO. But this won't happen, so I'm having my hopes up for DCT.

^ It should be a DCT and it's going to be exactly that

Manual option is possible. Automatic not so much.
