A few days after the first photos of the 2013 E-Class facelift were leaked, MB issued the official press release. We are now certain that Mercedes-Benz decided for a major redesign. Gone is the Ponton-inspired rear fender and the hard-line design of the bumpers and front lights. The new design language targets to make the E-Class “flow” and look sportier, as the designers “reinterpreted the classical design values of the brand using the existing basis”. The side chrome strip was also moved closer to the rocker panel in order for the car to appear lower.
The technology that now comes with the E-Class is even more impressive: A Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera, positioned behind the windscreen in the vicinity of the rear-view mirror, produces a three-dimensional view of the area up to around 50 metres in front of the vehicle. COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive brake assist systems is now standard across the range, as is ATTENTION ASSIST, which is now able to warn of inattentiveness and drowsiness across a wider speed range. In addition, a wide range of driving aid systems is optionally available: the DISTRONIC PLUS, Brake Assist system BAS PLUS, PRE-SAFE® PLUS, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive Highbeam Assist PLUS and Traffic Sign Assist make the E-Class one of the safest cars on the road.
Finally, two new engines are available: a new biturbo V6 (E400) produces 245 kW/333 hp) between 5250 and 6000 rpm and 480 Nm between 1600 and 4000 rpm, while meeting the EU6 emmisions standard and a four-cylinder diesel engine with an electric motor (E300 BlueTEC HYBRID), thereby producing a system output of 170 kW (231 hp) and 750 Nm of torque. The E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID consumes 4.1 l/100 km and produces CO2 emissions of 107 g/km.
