| Autocar - Mercedes-Benz SLS ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() What is it? This is the Mercedes SLS, which is billed as a modern-day successor to the legendary 300SL. We’re sampling it at the 2.2-mile Sachsenring circuit near Dresden, both behind the wheel and with former DTM ace Bernd Schneider driving. It’s not quite the finished product, but a pre-production prototype covered in light disguise. It is set to get its first public airing at the Frankfurt motor show in September. What’s it like? While there’s a good deal of the old 300SL evident within the SLS’s exterior shape - gullwing doors and all - it is anything but a throwback in terms of its construction. Its aluminium body is supported by a super-stiff aluminium spaceframe. The result? A kerb weight of 1680kg. The four-valve-per-cylinder 6.2-litre V8, mounted up front behind the front axle line, is related to the engine AMG places in just about all its road-going models these days: the M156. A raft of modifications make it lighter and livelier. So many changes, in fact, that the SLS’s engine gets its own unique codename: M159. It kicks out 563bhp at 6800rpm along with 479lb ft of torque at a rather high 4750rpm – some 402lb ft of which, AMG says, can be tapped at just 2500rpm. Channelling the drive back to the rear wheels is Mercedes’ first ever double-clutch gearbox. The seven-speed unit has four distinct shift modes as well as a race start function, and departs from AMG convention in being mounted at the rear in a transaxle, where it also provides the mounting points for the rear suspension. It’s an arrangement that provides the SLS with a near-to-perfect weight distribution of 48 per cent front/52 per cent rear. With those big doors drawn shut - a process that requires a big overhead heave due to the absence of an electronic closing mechanism - the SLS’s interior feels snug. You sit quite low, below the height of the sturdy sill. However. the upright windscreen provides an almost uninterrupted view out front. The dashboard is set well forward but there’s no real need to reach out, because all of the switchgear relevant to the car’s set-up is mounted down on the broad centre console, including the stubby shift lever. It’s a luxurious driving environment, full of leather, aluminium and carbonfibre. It also houses eight airbags - surely a record at this end of the supercar spectrum. It may be a prototype but the overall fit and finish of car we drove was highly impressive - already better than some long-established rivals, in fact. It’s loud, but not overbearingly so, the engine’s soundtrack being higher in pitch than the typically guttural blare of recent AMG models. It’s more responsive, too. Mercedes says it’ll hit 62mph from standstill in 3.8sec. Impressive - and it would be even sharper with a more aggressive final drive ratio. It’s above this speed, though, where the SLS is even more remarkable; the sprint to 124mph is achieved in under 10.0sec. Flat out, it is claimed to top 195mph. The big carbon ceramic discs - 390mm in diameter up front and 360mm at the rear - provide massive stopping power, and even after 10 hard laps the pedal was devoid of any fade. For all the severity of its acceleration and startling strength of its brakes, though, the SLS is remarkably fluid in its actions. The power-assisted steering is surprisingly light, but there’s enough life in it to urge you to push hard through corners because you’re always aware of what the front end is up to. You can sense the low moment of inertia - the upshot of AMG’s efforts to concentrate as much weight around the centre line as possible - in the way the SLS peels into corners at speed. The handling is wonderfully neutral. When you do edge past the high levels of adhesion, the SLS’s chassis - a combination of traditional double wishbones all round without any superfluous active suspension gimmickry of any kind - allows you to dabble with oversteer. But it’s the traction that is perhaps the most appealing part of the SLS’s whole dynamic repertoire. The SLS stomps out of corners with extraordinary rear end purchase, feeling more like a rear-engined car than one that sites its engine up front. Should I buy one? To say the SLS is merely good is to do it no justice at all. It is spectacularly good: solid, fast, agile and, perhaps most important, entertaining in a way no modern-day Mercedes has managed - the recently discontinued McLaren-built SLR included. Bottom line? The SLS is, in final prototype form at least, a far more engaging car than the SLR it effectively replaces in the Mercedes-Benz line-up - less grand tourer, more hardened supercar in overall character. Mercedes’ increasingly unconstrained AMG operation has succeeded in its goal of building a car capable of taking the challenge to the likes of the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, and not just on straight-line performance alone. Mercedes-Benz SLS - Road Test First Drive - Autocar.co.uk Fingers crossed about even coming close to the 599GTB. M

| From what I am seeing so far, the design looks pretty awesome. A nice homage to the original 300SL Gullwing and Roadster. The retro style looks pretty good (again, from what I can see and make out). I wonder why on other forums everyone is bashing this retro style, yet they love the new Camaro and Challenger (eh, retro style, anyone?). ![]() The Lexus LF-A is also being prepped up big time. These cars will probably hit the market at the same time give or take. ![]()

| They're referring to your recent decision to apply for MB fanboy membership. There is a monthly recurring charge for this membership you know, as it is a Mercedes membership, we feel the extra premium charged over other free competitor memberships is justified by the exclusivity, reliability and desirability of the brand. |
