Next-gen Mercedes SLK to feature diesel engine

The current Mercedes Benz SLK has been on the market since 2004 and recently underwent a mid-cycle facelift to keep it fresh until the arrival of the next-generation model sometime early next decade. The first two generations have been extremely successful for Mercedes, selling more than half a million examples since the launch of the compact roadster back in 1997.

An inside source at Mercedes has now revealed that the new SLK will be available with the same 2.2L four-cylinder diesel engine found in the current C250 CDI when it arrives in late 2010. The efficient mill is rated at 204hp (152kW) and 369lb-ft (500Nm) of torque, and in the C-Class sedan returns fuel-economy of 54.3mpg (4.33L/100km) and CO2 emissions of 138g/km.

Re: Next-gen Mercedes SLK to feature diesel engine

So this diesel engine will come in Late 2010 with the next generation SLK.

Interesting to see if the new Z4 will have a diesel model as well.

This will no doubt silence the cynics who scoffed when Audi announced the TT TDI, especially if BMW follow suit with the Z4.

Re: Next-gen Mercedes SLK to feature diesel engine

The time is right.

This is going to be an amazing car if it really gets the green light. Powerful, good engine response, sporty and yet fuel-efficient too. A car you can abuse and still squeeze decent gas mileage out of. Nice. Very nice.

Re: Next-gen Mercedes SLK to feature diesel engine

Although interesting, here in the States diesel fuel was so much higher when crude prices went up that, with the fuel mileage I get in my SLK, it would have cost me more to use diesel. Even with 10% better efficiency!
Nothing against diesel, just pure economics.

Re: Next-gen Mercedes SLK to feature diesel engine

10%. No, diesel get's better than 10% over a gas. I am drving an E and I get about 25%- 30% better mileage in an E320 over an E350.

I would imagine going from a SLK300 to an SLK250cdi would be well over 30% better mileage.

Smile Re: Next-gen Mercedes SLK to feature diesel engine

I get 25-28 MPG (US) around town and 28-34 MPG on the highway.
That is when I keep my foot off the throttle and use the excellent cruise control.
However, the worst I have gotten is 22MPG. The best was from Chicago to Southern Alabama. That was 35+.
When I get my 350 I think I'll stay with gas.
However, for those who still think diesel is a 2d cousin, got to an LMS/ALMS race and watch the Audi R10/15!
