The interior is very, very nice.

I'm surprised VW would come up with this - rock on!

My god .. what a beautiful hot hatch !! now couple this to the 2.0TFSI engine & DSG box and we have a winner ..

Roberto, what do u think of this adventrous design ? although there is alot of inspiration from other manufacturers but the final execution is just marvellous.

Re: New VW Scirocco / Iroc Concept

The rear and interior look great but the front looks weird. I think it needs a smaller, less radical and more VW-style grille and a bigger VW emblem which should be placed on the grille.

Edit: I made a quick chop.

I would like it to look more like this:

Re: New VW Scirocco / Iroc Concept

It is killer hot and it actually has proper rear seats and not a bench just like the Volco C30. Design wise I think they were a bit inspired by Honda and their radical Civic.

Re: New VW Scirocco / Iroc Concept

VW’s 2009 Iroc Coupe -Scirocco successor to premiere at Paris

Wolfgang Bernhard has barely warmed the seat as Volkswagen chairman and he is already attacking the market with products he hopes make the German automaker cool again. Look for proof in the reborn Scirocco coupe—dubbed Iroc—which makes its global debut in Paris in September.

If Bernhard’s plan comes to fruition, it will do for VW what the TT did for Audi—provide the German carmaker with a modern, relevant and desirable image-building model.

Iroc is planned for North American showrooms by the end of 2008, the same year VW launches its Land Rover LR2 rival, the Tiguan.

The original Scirocco was the highlight of the VW lineup when it was launched in 1974, an affordable Giugiaro-designed coupe that could seat four, and—in top-of-the-line, 16-valve 2.0-liter form—hold its own against some of the best two-door offerings of the day. It bolstered VW’s image and helped lay the foundations for some of its most successful years on record. With the Iroc (the name uses the middle four letters from the word Scirocco), VW hopes to recapture that old Scirocco magic.

The basic ingredients look right. The New Beetle notwithstanding, Wolfsburg has consciously steered away from throwback design cues for Iroc. The prominent brushed-aluminum single-frame grille won’t win any beauty contests, but the angular headlamps, distinctive clamshell hood and heavily flared front-wheel arches imbue Iroc with plenty of presence. Other distinctive features include a heavily raked windshield, pronounced shoulder line, shallow side glass and plunging roof-line. About the only weak point is the hatchback rear, which lacks the flair and imagination of the rest of the exterior. Iroc is similar in length to a Golf GTI, but is 1.5 inches wider and fully 3.3 inches lower.

Iroc runs on a straightforward front-wheel-drive mechanical package. Wheelbase and track widths are extended slightly over the Golf GTI, giving the coupe a confident stance. The show car sports 19-inch wheels, but we expect 18s in production form.

VW is vague on exact specifications, but the new coupe likely will be powered by three engines: a supercharged and turbocharged 1.4-liter, 210-hp four-cylinder Twincharger gasoline engine; a turbocharged 2.0-liter 240-hp four-cylinder; and a 3.6-liter 280-hp V6, the latter likely offered with 4Motion all-wheel drive. Transmission choices should include a standard six-speed manual and optional seven-speed Direct Sequential Gearbox.

VW will likely build about 60,000 Irocs annually, priced at about $26,000 in base trim.

Note: There is no word in VW's press release about the volume of the engine so my belief is that this is a new engine , possibly a 1.6 lt TSI, and not the 1.4 lt TSI.

I will explain. The 1.4 lt FSI has 90hp(=64.3 hp/lt) and the 1.6 lt FSI has 115 hp(=71.9 hp/lt) that means that the 1.6 FSI is (71.9/64.3=) 1.12 more efficient.

Now the 1.4 TSI has 170 hp(=121.4 hp/lt) so the 1.6 TSI will have 121.4 hp/lt x 1.6 lt = 194.3 hp but since the original 1.6 lt FSI was 1.12 times more efficient we get:1.12 x 194.3 = 217,6 hp which is very close to the 210 hp that VW announces.

Of course the calculations i made are approximate but should be close enough.

Re: New VW Scirocco / Iroc Concept

Cool thoughts on those engine stats Yannis!

How gorgeous is this concept car? Hey Roberto, why don't you stick this one into your superb concept cars thread? I love the interior and reckon the exterior looks are spot on. Pity about the "monster green" garish colour scheme. Ugh. Why not something a bit more restrained and classy? Like white. har har!

Re: New VW Scirocco / Iroc Concept

Volkswagen won't bring Scirocco to U.S.

Volkswagen won't sell its Scirocco hatchback in the United States, despite the popularity of the original coupe in America. VW isn't willing to risk cannibalizing sales of the GTI, says Adrian Hallmark, executive vice president of Volkswagen of America.

"It is economically suicidal for us to risk the sales volume and the potential for GTI," Hallmark told Automotive News. "We don't want it," Hallmark said of the Scirocco.

The Scirocco will have the same engine, chassis, and suspension as the GTI. It will be based closely on the Iroc Concept, which debuted in August 2006.

The market for hatchbacks isn't large enough in the United States to support another model. "The coupe/hatchback market is so small that having six different coupes and hatchbacks would be crazy," Hallmark said.

Re: New VW Scirocco / Iroc Concept

Report: Scirocco may still come to America

In late April, Volkswagen of America executive Adrian Hallmark said the new Scirocco hatchback would not come to the United States. "We don't want it," he said, suggesting it would cannibalize sales of the GTI. Not so fast says the home office.

Bringing the Scirocco to the United States is still a top consideration, VW spokesman Hans-Gerd Bode told AutoWeek. He said the final decision will not be made by Volkswagen of America, but rather by VW CEO Martin Winterkorn in Germany.

A final decision will come in 2008. The Scirocco would arrive in America at the end of that year, assuming VW decides to import it.

The Scirocco will have the same engine, chassis, and suspension as the GTI. It will be based closely on the Iroc Concept, which debuted in August 2006.
