The Artist: While the current mirrors may look sleek, IMO they're quite useless. The blind spots using these particular mirrors are huge and unacceptable for me. While these new ones do looks ugly, I presume they will be more functional.
MB should take cue from BMW on this one as the mirrors in the M5 are absolutely perfect without looking ghastly like in these pictures.

I've always thought it was because of the Intelligent Light System, I think the current C-class features these kind of lights.
When you turn left or right, the foglight will light up to increase visibility in corners, only works when the lights are turned on.
Just a guess, the outer foglights is for turningvisibility, the inner foglights for straightforward visibility.
The next generation E-class has double foglights as well but the Avantgarde version features LED's. So maybe the double foglights will function as daylight running as well?

I dislike them too, the current one looks so elegant.
As GrimReaper pointed out, for safety reasons and I also believe EU rules.
Aside of that I think that Mercedes-Benz has already started with sharing identical components throughout its product portfolio in order to reduce costs.
The mirrors looks the exactly the same as the one found in the spyphoto's of the next generation E-class and CLK-class but also the GLK-class and the C-class Blue-efficiency models.

I'd rather see these side mirrors on it:

will the headlamps be blacked out or is that only for testing, cause i quite like them!

Yep, the mirrors on the W221 are too small for such a big car.

Don't like the turn signal strip, unless they're LED's.

The tail lights look the same , but I like everything else.

I believe this model has the night view feature since it has the two projector headlamps and the camera in the windshield.

I also wish they do make the exhaust exposed 'cause this looks like an S600, not a normal S.

Let's not complain too much about the side mirrors because it would be worse. Check out these dumbo ears the facelifted IS will be sporting*face palm*

That's not the facelift for the IS but their car for some racing series.

Why would they be testing it on the public roads and not a racetrack then?

It a race car, if you look a bit carefully you can see the roll cage inside.

Driver must have complained about the potholes on the race track and wanted a more cushy ride.

Facelift already? Time waits for no one, not even Mercedes-Benz. Seems like this car was just introduced. 2009 is going to be a busy year, GL, S, CL facelifts and new E and CLK. Should be a record year.

Cleaned up the bumper and also changed the taillights (which i really dislike in the original car) but other than that i have a feeling this facelift is going to make the s class a truly wonderful car:

Bumper looks great, while double fogs look crap! Rear lights look better in your chop, but i still hate the shape of them.

Just what who we needed, Andy. I love what you did to the tail lights. Not that I mind the current one but it would be cool if they looked like that. The double fog lights don't look that crazy at all.

Yay ...they've done something about those bloody awful rear lights -- these new [ODC style] ones are MUCH better -- excellent!

That's really hot. Mercedes have a tendency to give tail lights a facelift as well so I bet that the S-klasse will be receiving a refresh as well.

The front bumper looks great but the double foglights make it look a little too busy. I feel the same way about the turn indicaters being moved as well, (that look might hurt the AMG models.)

We need to see more angles of the mirrors. I`m not making a judgement yet.

The rear lights look a little odd without the body stripes, man.. I could live with it though.

Could it be that this is not a facelift and just an update to the rear lights and the headlights perhaps to integrate some new technology. Because it really doesn't look any different????? Maybe I'm losing my touch in spotting the difference between MB facelifts..

It's the usual MB facelift.

Updated bumpers, lights, mirrors, rims and probably some interior details.

I hope to see the new V6 and V8 engines,or that gonna debut with the new E?

Will they replace the actual taillights by a new ones? A taillights with the style of andy´s Ps will be gorgeus.
