He said he would be in a couple of years. But he hates black interior.

Not quite this soon and the S450 won't be here until April or so. I only have 1500 miles on the S430 so I at least want to get 10,000 miles before I trade..:-) AlxAmg was correct...I really do not like black or charcoal interiors...

They actually have an s550 at the local dealer, it is Black with Black interior (which I do not like as well) ...the car does not have all the interior options (16 way seat adjustments etc.) so it is not fair to compare it to the 760 yet, as it was it was not very impressive but the salesman did say that this was a demo and it was there to give an I dea of what the car looks like. Loots of room both back and front and they did go back to BIG seats up front which I like.
The outside is pretty cool,it is different from the others in it's class but in my oppinion not a knock out...could be the color combination .
Did notice the controls for the seat adjustments on the doors were cheap looking and felt like "cheap plasstic",no fancy at all , I was surprised by this.
I'll have to wait to see a fully loaded one in order to make a decission but as of now I think the best car in this class is the BMW 760.

This is something I don't understand. Why oh why would Mercedes ship every dealer in the U.S. a stripped down model? If I were running MBUSA I would have demanded that the bigger dealers get 2 cars to show, one with some options and one fully loaded. One Black/Black (which is what a lot of MB buyers like) and one Green, Blue or White with a beige/cashmere interior, the one with the beige interior would be loaded with options. Duh doesn't MB have sense enough to show fully loaded cars to draw the big money in first and then ship the cheaper ones a few weeks later? I bet there are quite a few people turned off by a black on black S550 with no options. The hell with Distronic and what not, the interior/comfort options are the one that need to be shown. Different color leathers, woods and interior convience options. Someone either Germany or Jersey isn't paying attention. For the real high-end, high-volume dealers I would have shipped a Designo model with some options too. The key is to get people to fall in love with the car instantly.

Not really fair to compare the 760Li to the S550 though. I'd wait and see how the S600 stacks up.

Yeah whats the deal with these black/black basic cars. Perhaps these are a few of the 500 or so cars that MB built and distibuted all over for testing and quality controls before customer cars were built. No point in wasting money on expensive trim for "test mules".

Yeah I understand that too, but still it seems that every dealer in the U.S. got a Black/Black stripped model. Not a smart decision IMO. This is the most important model launch Mercedes will have until the new C-Class next year. The bigger dealers should have at least been able to get a full loaded model here and there with an interior color other than black.

The actual testing part should be over anyway. If they're still testing stuff at this late date I see nothing but problems ahead. These cars are what call demonstrators here in the U.S.

Yeah I saw that. The S600 placement I don't agree with, but then again the German magazines use a lot of different criteria than the U.S. publications.

Here is a shot from the MBUSA site...nothing new but I thought it took full advantage of the features of the new S. I have to admit I am falling in love with this car...but 2008 would be the earliest for me. A S450 or perhaps they will have a diesel in the US by that time.

Fair point...eventhough it seems from some posts I've read performace wise the MB will be faster ect. I can't get over the "cheap looking, cheap feeling" plastic used on the door controls and the A/C/ buttons non the dash board . I hope the fully loaded cars have the real buttons.

Any word on what the general response has been to the new S at the dealership? Do they have a lot of orders/waiting lists or is the response so far like the R-Class was when it came out?
