Wow,Schumi is talking

Too bad BMW doesn't have anything near that segment to compare it to but...anyway i can think of a couple of reason to pick the Black over regular SL65.

250kg lighter.
661bhp,the most powerful German car currently in production.

The SL65 Black is not meant to have the best handling, its meant to be a "Thriller" just like the CLK Black. Sure the R8 V10 handles better, but a SL65 B.S owner won't give a s**t about that.

This car has my full respect but when ever I see an LP560, the R8 V10 parish from my memory.

Read the road and track test, the BS was not any faster than a 'normal' (you seem to not like the term vanilla) SL65 in a straight line. It might be faster around a track, but then if track performance was your consideration, you have better choices for fraction of the cost. So I ask again, besides its looks and rarity (both of which I admit are very compelling) why get the BS over a normal SL65.

I will ignore rest of your childish comments.

Re: Edmunds Inside Line - 2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI V10 First Drive

Look, it's not like Merc needed to improve the straightline performance of the SL65 nor was it like they were engineering a 911 GT2 trackday beater. Clearly the SL65 BS is engineered to be something in between: a very fast roadcar both in straightline terms as well as being sharper and more responsive in real-world cornering. Add the deliciously outrageous bodyshape to this and the car is all it needs to be. The world is full of Mercedes Benz enthusiasts with the right money who know exactly what the SL65 BS is all about and they're going to buy it for that reason.

Let's be perfectly frank here, the excessive output of the twin-turbo V12 in the vanilla (I like the term) SL65 meant that even with a plus two ton kerbweight - the SL65 had more power and torque than was necessary or even totally usable. The SL65 AMG BS being lighter, is still going to have an almighty struggle between 1000 Nm and two fat rear tyres despite the wider track which has been introduced to enhance cornering ability rather than as a means to improving traction. I reckon the SL65 BS will be all the handling 97.2371% of good drivers will want.

The point here is that in this discussion it was brought up that the R8 V10 is the better of two efforts compared with the SL65 AMG BS - a car being described as less than what it could've been. I'm refuting that point and am saying that the SL65 AMG BS is all the success that it needs to be. It shouldn't, therefore, be expected to beat the R8 at its own game.

But back to the car at hand; the R8 V10 is the business.

Re: Edmunds Inside Line - 2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI V10 First Drive

Talk about an amazing start for the R8 V10. Great test!!!

I love this:

It's taken Audi awhile to deliver the supercar that it's been promising us, but the 2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI V10 appears to be just the beginning of a true German presence in the exotic car market. Both BMW and Mercedes-Benz tried and failed to crack this barrier, so all credit to the romantic engineers at Audi.

Ah, thanks Martin, that statement should probably help me make the point that I have miserably failed at making.

I can see why the BS has a lot of appeal among the MB fans, it is exactly what the doctored ordered for them - brutal power, brutal looks but without compromising typical Mercdes comfort levels. But for a non Mercedes fan like me, it does very little beyond it's muscular looks. On the other hand, I am not a big Audi fan either, but the R8 V10 has me hook line and sinker.

Re: Edmunds Inside Line - 2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI V10 First Drive

Yeah ok, fine to draw comparisons with BMW and Mercedes Benz but the event of the R8 doesn't signify the advent of a "true German presence in the exotic market". Porsche has long been flying that banner admirably with cars like the GT3 RS, GT2 and Carrera GT.

And don't forget SLR. While I would any day take any version of R8 over the numerous versions of SLR, SLR is definitely more 'exotic' than R8.

Precisely how I feel Sunny.

For me, personal stance on the matter is this, SL65 AMG BS:
Appreciation: Endless
Acquisition: Never

It's not my style, your style or even, say, Just_me's style. But to say that it is an example of failure compared with the R8 V10 is a moot point. The SL65 BS is what it is; the R8 V10 is what it is and never the two shall meet.

Let's put it another way, the SL65 AMG is as good to the Mercedes Benz brand (and its core values) as the R8 V10 is to the Audi brand. Interestingly the difference is that the R8 elevates Audi's once "imperfect" take on driving dynamics, as a supposed core value, to a whole new atmospheric layer...

Re: Edmunds Inside Line - 2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI V10 First Drive

SL65 BS will only be built in limited edition (70 or so?) so let the MB buyers glorify the car and love it above other sportscars. To me , design of the SL65 BS and the exclusivness are the only thing I like but as overall package I rather own something else, like a LP640 or a 599 GTB or even the R8 V10.

Oh yeah, this thread have gone the wrong direction Have we already forgot that this R8 reev all the way up to 8700 rpm? Sex on wheels come to my mind...

Well according to MB's conservative numbers the SL65 BS is 0.7s faster than the normal SL65 but anyway...

And i'm glad u ignored my childish comments, coz u really has nothing to compare or though in there from ur beloved brand
