Of course it's different but the fact is that the first thing you are expecting from a super car or a "super sport car" is maximum driving pleasure.

Re: Leaked: Audi R8 V12 TDI Study for Detroit!

Well said, but if you ask me CGT, SLR, Zonda and such qualify as supercars, the R8 doesn't! Therefore, this diesel engine in R8 i don't mind at all, but a diesel in a CGT or Zonda? Now, that would be a disaster, wouldn't it?

Hope you get what i mean...

I get it but i and cool raoul think that even for a car with the level of sportiness of an R8, a diesel isn't suited.

Why you're so sure there won't be any driving pleasure?

Mate, you know i've been driving a diesel car, 1,7 ton... And one much lighter, more agile, much lighter R8 with Wankler's engine and a Nissan 350Z can do nothing against my car... Even when put on track.

Tell me there's no fun in this:

It may not sound like a petrol, but there's driving pleasure, more than i need in my poor, stinky, 3.0d TT...

There's 1st time for everything and in this Audi's case at least it's interesting and i'm eager to see the outcome, but forgive me for being so confident in this whole project. (I admit there's a dose of diesel admiration/bias by me... )

Re: Leaked: Audi R8 V12 TDI Study for Detroit!

I pick R8 V8 over R8 v12 becuase I like to reev high and I like to use my stick a lot, that's driving pleasure to me. scrw the diesel and give the car a highreeving biturbo instead Let the posers drive Diesels (Ty)

Re: Leaked: Audi R8 V12 TDI Study for Detroit!

In this type of car, i'd too take high revving V8 (bi-turbo or not) over V12 diesel, absolutely... It's just that i don't share opinion with some about the whole thing/idea being pointless and nonsense.

Lol, Andreas...

The best video I could find about the sound of the V12 TDI of the R10. Doesn't sound bad at all.

This is a V12 TDI with no catalysator, almost no exhaust system, nothing at all. This should sound like an F1. This should make a fabulous noise.
It does not.

Even a normal average sportcar sounds better than that.

Imagine a petrol V12 instead, imagine the motor of the Murcielago...Can you compare them? Does it make you cry of pleasure like the V12 Zonda or V10 CGT does? Does it make you love it like you love the motor of an F430, 911?

No, not at all. All that you say is "it doesn't sound bad at all", and it ain't a standard motor... It is a V12, and it sounds...well, it sounds.

It makes noise. The same with petrol makes fabulous music.

To each his own. I don't want this monster. A diesel in my Merc or Beemer, okay. Not in my sportcar, sorry.

I have no doubt there's pleasure there, but what i am trying to say is that for the same level of power and technology, a petrol will be always IMO more pleasant than a diesel, of course this V12 TDI will be amazing, what do you expect from 500hp and 1000nm ? but if i had the opportunity to choose between it and a petrol V12 (or in this case a V10), i will choose the petrol straight.

Re: Leaked: Audi R8 V12 TDI Study for Detroit!

i think the concept looks VERY HOT, not sure about a diesel r8 tho, i think audi is going a little too far with the diesel r8, it would be more suitable for a a7 type of GT coupe.
but i think it's ultimately just a concept, but i do want to see the look of this car with a v10 v10 stuffed in the back tho. the details of this car is just phenomenal.

Poverty is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Leaked: Audi R8 V12 TDI Study for Detroit!

For those that say that diesel is crap because the higher the revs you get the slower it pulls well I mean thats pretty obvious.

To get the best out of a diesel you cannot drive it like a petrol. Rev a diesel to death and you will get nowhere fast. Shift early and use that torque and you will leave petrols in your dust.

Diesels are getting better and better. I will always be a petrol man but some of you need not be so narrow minded. I know of tuned 2.0TDI's that kick out more torque than V8's in bodyshells that weigh circa 1100kg. Seriously fast stuff.

Re: Leaked: Audi R8 V12 TDI Study for Detroit!

Yep they are fast, no doubt. All what I say it that they offer a lot less pleasure than the same in petrol.
For me pleasure is very different than speed.

For me, highreving a screaming motor just offers much more pleasure than going fast in a car with a crap noise and the need to change your gears early.

Never said a diesel was slow, just that it offers less pleasure. Therefore it is stupid in a sportcar, but fabulous in a cruiser car, on the road to travel fast, economically, powerfully and now almost noiselessly.

This is what I want from an E-Class or a 5er, so here the diesels have the lead.
But on a sportcar you want something more, that the diesel can't offer.

It has nothing to do with being narrow-minded.
Did you guys know that, at VW, TDI means diesel?
I drive a diesel. I can recognize where the diesel is better. It does not mean that a diesel is better everywhere.

A diesel sportcar, no way for me.
A petrol Golf, no thanks.

Re: Leaked: Audi R8 V12 TDI Study for Detroit!

C'mon, let Audi celebrate their Le Mans success with the V12 TDI. The R8 is rightfully the model which should get this engine from all Audi models as it's the one that is closest to the racing cars (and actually shares a name with their previous LM car).

I doubt this will be the only other engine option in the R8 so you who prefer petrols will be satisfied with the rumored V10.
