Another day at Mosport International Raceway

I went to Mosport on Wednesday as part of the 6th Gear group. It was a bit chilly (13-15 degrees), and the rain didn't come until the afternoon. The left front tire of the 1er was shot, so I took the C55. Took advantage of the good weather in the morning and did a tonne of laps to the point where the computer notified me to add some motor oil after prolonged running at high rpm's. So I got some Mobil 1 0W40 motor oil to top up and I was good to go again in the afternoon when it rained. I learned quite a bit about the proper racing line in the wet, as the normal dry line became so slick it was like cornering on ice.

Again, there were lots of P-cars there (996 Turbo's, 996 Cabrio, 993 Turbo, 997 GT3, 997 GT3 RS, 944's), 2 older Ferrari's (race prepped 355, and red 308), 2 E46 M3's, 2 other Benzes (E55 AMG, E550 4Matic) that over power me, 2 Corvette Z06's, new Evo X, old Subuaru RS, etc, and quite a few fully prepped race cars of all sorts.

The highlight for me is knowledge that I am definitely getting faster on this track. Last time I was there in May, my fastest lap was around 1 min 52 seconds. This time, I could consistently lap around 1 min 45 seconds when there was no traffic in front of me. I get these times from my video frames. I'm personally very pleased with this as many of the experienced P-car guys are lapping in the low to mid 1:40's. As always, I think there is still some time I could shave off in the future if I ever get the courage to nail a perfect lap.

Another highlight that day was being held up for over 10 minutes on 2 separate occasions by slower cars (a silver 944 and a yellow Ferrari 355). I was clearly faster than these 2 guys, but they never pointed me by to pass so I followed the rules and just kept following them. I don't know whether it was pride that prevented these guys from doing the right thing........maybe letting a Benz pass you really hurts.......I guess I will never know.

Here are 2 videos:

1) My quickest lap of 1 min 44.7 seconds:
YouTube - C55 AMG quick lap at Mosport (1 min 44.7 sec)

2) A longer video of me chasing some cars:
YouTube - C55 AMG at Mosport chasing cars

All in all, a great day for me to end the track season. Definitely want to take the 1er to Mosport next year to see what she can do. But after taking the 135i to the last 3 track events, it felt absolutely GREAT to drive the C55 again on a track. The car handles VERY well and is pretty damn fast!

Re: Another day at Mosport International Raceway

A bit of a thread revival, but here are some pics from the track day at Mosport.

Here are some pics of the C55.

And for the first time in my life, I wasn't the only Benz at the track. There was a E55 AMG, and a E550 4Matic.

I do have pics of some of the 40+ cars that were there. If there is interest, and if I have time, I can post some of them.

Re: Another day at Mosport International Raceway

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. How did the E55 and the E550 handle on the track? Can they withstand the demands of being driven on the track?

Just type in "in car camera mount" in google or ebay and you'll see plenty of options. There are various types. The most popular are either the suction type (like mine), or those that mount on to the head rest supports.

I don't know if the drivers of those cars were pushing it to their own or their car's limits. Even though both the E55 and E550 overpowered me from a HP point of view, they were no match for the lighter and more nimble C55, especially in those high speed corners. Even the 2 E46 M3's there were easily passed. My guess is that they were track rookies. The only street cars that were consistently quite a bit faster than me were a 997 GT3, 993 Turbo, and new Corvette Z06.

With regards to whether the E55 and E550 can withstand the demands of driving on the track, I suspect that isn't a major problem, if they are anything like my C55. Sure, the tires will be wear out much more quickly, and brake pads too, but these have to be considered consumable items that you replace if you track the car regularly.

A question, who takes the pictures of your car? A friend?

No, not a friend. The track group I went with hired a photographer to take pictures.

There were over 40+ cars there that day and there are many, many pics. Here are some of the more "interesting" street cars that were there.

Mini Cooper S

Souped up Supra

Z06

The lone Audi

New Evo X

RX-8

Some older Ferrari's......

Some BMW M cars.....

Some P-cars.....

Thanks for the pics PCV. Great shots as always! [How's the heel-n-toe and left-foot braking coming along? ]

Have you had a chance to experience any of the true track-burners like the GT3 RS or Z06 or such like? I'd love to hear about your experiences if you have.

Yeah, I'd work in a sewerage farm for a week to drive a GT3 RS around a circuit like that.

Haha.....no heel-n-toe necessary in the C55, and I never left foot brake.

However, I think I got the hang of heel-n-toe in the 135i. Took the 1er to the track 3 times this past summer. Here is a previous thread about that with video and some pics too:
http://www.germancarforum.com/pit-gen...ent-track.html

If I could have the "ultimate" track car, it would be a GT3 RS.......unfortuantely, I haven't had the chance to even ride in one during a track day, but I'll let you know if I ever do!!! I have ridden in a Z06, but only on the streets/highways and not on a track. I have a friend who has one, and maybe I can convince him to go tracking with me next year.
